So when we discovered Tom Hanks' Castaway island was just a few miles away, we had to see it for ourselves—and honestly? Imagine if we could actually survive out here. In this episode, we anchor in a downpour (of course, right as we're dropping the hook), Warren finally gets our dive compressor working, and we go on our first scuba dive since being back on the boat. Seven years ago, before we even bought this boat, getting our dive certifications was the first thing we did—so we could do exactly this. Then we set off to explore the island where they filmed Castaway with Tom Hanks. We walk the beaches, hike to the summit, and talk about whether we could actually do it if we had to. Spoiler: we're really glad we have the boat. These Fijian islands remind us so much of the Marquesas—our first landfall when we sailed across the South Pacific four years ago. ► Our correspondent in South Africa, Jonathan Jagot, was able to test the 2026 Leopard 53 PC departing from Cape Town. ► Indeed, the largest model in Leopard Catamarans’ power range was launched in early 2020 - celebrated with a world premiere at the Miami International Boat Show - so it was high time to revisit the design, especially as competition in the 50-55ft powercat segment has intensified significantly. The Leopard Catamarans and Robertson & Caine teams have therefore introduced an all-new interior design, which proves to be far warmer and more inviting than the previous version. The overall layout remains unchanged, retaining the signature split galley close to the cockpit and the saloon located near the forward door. ► The most striking changes concern the cockpit, where all seating has been redesigned to be modular - so if you feel like turning the aft deck into a dance floor, that’s now entirely possible. Notable, too, is the improved integration of the aft platform, now considered a true extension of the cockpit rather than a simple add-on served by an inadequate guardrail. ► The new 53PC also benefits from additional storage beneath the floors and seating, along with more modern lighting throughout. ► Full review in an upcoming issue of Multihulls World. Matsumoto Castle, built around 1594, is Japan’s oldest surviving six-story (from five external tiers) black castle, known as "Crow Castle". It is a rare "hirajiro" (flatland castle) featuring a hidden, secret floor for soldiers, a peaceful Moon Viewing Room added during peacetime, and, remarkably, survived demolition in the Meiji era thanks to local efforts.  * The Hidden Floor: While appearing to be five stories from the outside, the castle has a secret, unlit sixth floor between the second and third stories. This hidden area was used to hide soldiers, store weapons, and ammunition. * "Crow Castle" Nickname: The exterior is covered in black lacquer, earning it the nickname "Crow Castle" (Karasu-jo). This design was primarily for aesthetic, contrasting with the white "Egret" castles, but also served to intimidate opponents. * A "Flatland" Fortress: Unlike most Japanese castles built on hills or mountains, Matsumoto is a hirajiro(flatland castle), built on a plain, requiring a massive, complex system of moats and interconnected walls for defense. * The Peaceful Addition: The Tsukimi-yagura (moon-viewing room) was added in the 1630s during a time of peace. It is notably less fortified than the rest of the structure, allowing the lord to host tea ceremonies and view the moon. * The Curse of Tada Kasuke:According to local legend, a farmer named Tada Kasuke, who led a tax revolt, was executed and placed a 200-year curse on the castle, causing the ruling family to suffer until they honored him. * Saved by Locals: During the Meiji Restoration (late 19th century), many castles were destroyed. Matsumoto Castle was saved from being sold and demolished when local residents and officials organized a campaign to preserve it. * Extremely Steep Stairs: The wooden interior is preserved, featuring very narrow, steep, and treacherous staircases, designed to make it hard for attackers to climb quickly.
