Dismasting is a serious and potentially dangerous event that can occur on a sailing vessel. It happens when the mast breaks or falls over. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including strong winds, waves, or a collision with another object. If a sailing vessel experiences dismasting, the first priority is to ensure the safety of everyone on board. The crew should check for any injuries and make sure that everyone is wearing life jackets. The skipper should then assess the damage and determine whether the vessel is still seaworthy. If the vessel is still able to sail, the crew may be able to rig a temporary mast or jury rig (an improvised mast made from whatever materials are available) to allow the vessel to continue to its destination or a safe harbour. If the vessel is not seaworthy, the crew may need to call for assistance or abandon ship. It's important for sailors to be prepared for a dismasting by carrying appropriate safety equipment and knowing how to respond in an emergency. Proper maintenance and regular inspection of the mast and rigging can also help to prevent dismasting from occurring in the first place. We had some problems in our boat this week, of course, you might think, it’sa boat and boats always have problems. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. In this episode we depart Sao Nicolao and sail to the island of Sao Vincente, specifically the port city of Mindelo. While here we take a ferry to explore Santo Antao, and explore this "Island of Mountains" with it's unbelievable cobblestone roads up into the mountains, and precarious stepped slopes for agriculture. This island is the bread and fruit basket of the Cape Verde islands. We prep for the Atlantic crossing, do some engine and mast-head maintenance, provisioning, pickle the water maker, stow away the dinghy, and get the bottom of the boat scrubbed before departure. We wave good bye to our friends on Rapau and Spela, and finally we're at the airport to pick up Steve and Kevin B...our Atlantic crossing crew! Thanks for following! Hauling out is always a scary moment... We arrived in Aratu, Bahia (in Brazil) and we had the opportunity to tour an amazing 44ft aluminum _sailboat_ that is been built in the yacht club. We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). #184 ✍️ L’année débute par des bricoles. Rien d’important, juste quelques travaux que l’on pourrait remettre à plus tard, mais il n’est jamais bon de procrastiner sur un bateau. Il suffit de laisser trainer pour qu’un petit rien se transforme en réels tracas. Alors, nous nous mettons à la tâche de résoudre un jeu dans la bôme qui chiffonne mon capitaine. Changer le réa d’une des prises de ris. Et tant qu’à y être, mon Tchoupi toujours astucieux, s’essai avec son fils, à la fabrication d’une manivelle de winch sur visseuse portative. De mon côté, c’est couture, mais couture avec du bon fil UV. Malgré le prix que nous avions mis dans notre dernière bobine, nous avons tout à refaire, moins d’un an après. Toutes les coutures brulées par le soleil ! Par la même occasion, le cristal de toutes nos bâches va être également changé, cramé lui aussi par les Ultraviolets ! Pour finir, bien que rien ne soit jamais fini, nous changeons tous les boulons des cadènes. Si je me suis bien renseignée, les têtes de nos vis seraient atteintes de rouille erratique. En soit, rien de grave, puisque les pièces ne sont pas attaquées à cœur. Simplement un problème visuel disgracieux qui inflige des coulures jaunâtres à notre bon lion. Dégagés temporairement de nos responsabilités de maintenances, nous prenons du bon temps avec les bateaux copains et les nombreux followers qui nous contactent pour que l’on se rencontre. De la sympathie se créée, de l’affection, de l’amitié. Les soirées s’enchainent à la cadence du jus de canne à sucre distillé, et quand il est bien fermenté, quelques têtes tournent. Rien d’étonnant alors, quant à 23 heures, bien vitaminés par le jus de citron qui fait si bien la concoction locale, nous nous retrouvions à célébrer à bord de Black Lion, un mariage ! Oui, vous avez bien lu, un mariage ! Parce que figurez-vous qu’un capitaine aurait droit de vie, de mort et de mariage à bord de son navire. Bon là ! Il y a quand même débat ! Vie, pour une naissance, pourquoi pas. Mort, ce fût certainement le cas fût un temps. Tant qu’au mariage, une officialisation dans une mairie semble de nos jours obligatoires ! Mais peu importe, cette union fait partie de l’histoire de Black Lion et les époux, des amis qui resteront pour toujours dans nos cœurs. It’s haul out day! “There is nothing scarier and more exciting than seeing your entire house and everything you own held up by two little yellow straps” That is the understatement of a life time. We have been waiting for this moment for 8 months and had built up so many ideas of what we were going to need to do once she was out. There were the obvious jobs like scraping and painting of course and the thru hulls but what else did our Hunter have in store for us? It’s not just the work ahead that is daunting, it’s the haul itself. You hear so many horror stories about things that have gone wrong with this process that it makes you cringe when you see those straps starting to pull hard and your house is slowly being raised out of its natural space. We feel very lucky to have found our spot here in Urbanna. We chose it because they have a DIY yard and were planning to do all the work ourselves. But you never really know what you are getting into. As we got to know the owner, Jimmy, and his crew of Port Urbanna Boatworks we knew we had picked the right place. They are super professional and get the job done right with out cutting corners or charging that “Mariner Tax” that seems to be on everything that involves boats. When you live on a yacht full time, it is important to get some time away from the yacht and the fixing, repair and maintenance works that comes along with “ life of a yacht” This year we went to Mauritius in the Indian Ocean to visit friends, family and explore Mauritius from the shore. We did lots of hiking, swimming, mountain & road biking - after training for 4 weeks, we embarked on a circumnavigation of Maurice ( Mauritius) on road bike, following the coastal roads. We did the 250 km of coastal roads in 5 days, stopping to see friends and explore the rich culture and historical sights of Maurice. We went clockwise starting from Petite Rivière at Port Louis. Originally, we had planned to split the 250 km into 4 legs, but the opportunity to visit friends on the east coast made us split leg 2 into two short days. I have no regrets about buying Wahine four years ago, She has been my home on the water, classroom, studio, laboratory, think tank, and refuge. We have sailed over 3000 kilometers visiting over 60 ports. It has been a pure delight to see much of the same coastline from the sea that I previously enjoyed from a bicycle saddle I have learned a lot, not least about myself. One of those things is wondering about my hesitancy. I have nervously left port many times with safety-related niggles not to mention the frustration over legal issues. Wahine is a project boat, and still is, and my lack of DIY skills is certainly an impediment. I knew that when I became her guardian. As I entered the new year, I reflected on these things and asked myself, what are the key issues I need in a boat that will help me overcome my hesitancies to leave port and feel safe and confident leaving port for the open Ocean. My conclusion is I need a turnkey boat not a project boat, a foreign boat rather than a JP vessel. I have no idea how all this is going to work out. But here goes. This Monaro 235 Hardtop Sport ticks a lot of boxes; Seaworthy, fuel efficient, comfortable, low maintenance, modern styling and features. The hull shape is based on the rock solid riding of the Monaro 24, 1 1/2ft shorter with a cutout for the swimgrid. The enlarged windows make for great visibility. The self bailing cockpit space is spacious and has a cockpit door to access the swimgrid. The stainless bowrail is extended aft to add safety to the walkaround feature. There two fishholds, one with a pump out the other self draining. The F250 Yamaha has only 12.9 hours, the F9.9 yamaha high thrust kicker has trim and tilt, remote controls electric start and integrated steering wit about 3 hours. The hard top has a drop curtain aft. We uncovered Seawind after 7 months of sitting in a field awaiting our return, redesigned and built an exhaust system on our Bukh DV20, lapped a thru hull and greased the others, made some improvements to our galley and so much more.
