Our next big task, one we need to do before winter, is to get our Mizzen mast up. We haven't touched it for a long while, so couldn't remember quite where we had got to and where everything was. Several years ago we pretty comprehensively stripped the mast of fittings and primed, undercoated and top coated it with International Perfection. We had got partway through wiring it for AIS and WiFi, then someone damaged it. Now it is repaired it is time to get ready to put it up. It has been under cover on the hard for six years and it is nearly spotless. All she needs is a survey, a coat of bottom paint, and off you go. She is ideal for a solo sailor or a small family and she can be raced and/or cruised. She comes with 4 sails, a dodger, a bunch of electronics (including radar), an inflatable dinghy, an outboard, and much more. Sadly, Andy, the owner, passed away and the estate must sell his prized boat. It is obvious that Andy loved his boat and he spent countless hours making her ship-shape and up-to-date. Clean, solid, and ready for her next adventure, don't miss out on the opportunity. BUT, as always, unless you're a true DIY person with a ton of boat knowledge, you must get a survey and you'll likely need one, no matter what, for insurance purposes. Having been on the hard for six years comes with pros and cons, so it's best to proceed with caution. However, we were absolutely blown away by the condition of her topsides, deck, and interior. Even the engine looked pristine. By the way, a note about INSURANCE. We just got a new insurance policy (comprehensive) for our nearly 45 year old boat through Progressive (over the phone, not through their portal), and it was a piece of cake. Additionally, our boat was purchased by a LLC with 3 owners, and there was still no issue. So, I reckon insurance for this boat would be every bit as easy. The Final Stretch We began our last significant leg of the journey with an early start, setting our alarm for 4:30 AM. The night before, we had moved our vessel, the WJ, to the floating jetty for an easy departure. At 5:45 AM, after coffee and final preparations, we cast off. The initial part of our journey was blessed with favorable winds, allowing us to sail with all sails at half wind. Our goal was to minimize engine use as much as possible. As we sailed southward, the wind shifted to ample and then downwind, eventually decreasing. To combat the increasing sway, we adjusted our sails, hauling in the mainsail and letting the mizzen and Genoa do the work. We implemented a watch system to ensure adequate rest during our 35-38 hour trip. The night brought its own challenges, with Pat nearly being "torpedoed" by several fishing boats. This led to course adjustments and a decision to change our route, passing above the wind farms and further up than through the reels. After 39 hours at sea, we finally dropped anchor near the lighthouse, a spot that had become familiar to us. The following day, we enjoyed some shore time, including a long walk with our dog Reef and a delicious pancake at a local eatery. Boisterous Anchor and Guest Visit The next day greeted us with grey skies and brisk winds. We spent the morning cleaning the boat thoroughly before heading ashore for a walk and to get groceries. In the afternoon, we welcomed guests aboard for drinks and dinner, which proved to be quite an adventure due to the heavy winds and rising waters. From Salt to Sweet Water Early the next morning, we set sail for Makkum, seeking fresh water. The journey was calm, with favourable tides allowing us to sail almost anything. We navigated through the Lorentz locks and moored at the long jetty in Makkum. The evening was spent dining with a friend at a local restaurant[1]. Exploring the IJsselmeer Our journey continued with a sail from Stavoren to Medemblik and back to Stavoren. The wind was more enthusiastic than expected, providing a nice exercise in tacking. We ended the day anchored off Stavoren, enjoying a peaceful evening[1]. A Day at Anchor We spent a tropically warm day at anchor near Stavoren. The morning was slow and relaxed, with Reef having spent the night on deck under the starry sky. We took the dinghy ashore for a walk and lunch, then enjoyed some sun on the foredeck before preparing dinner and capturing drone footage at sunset[1]. The Concluding Miles Our final day of sailing began early, with a 6:30 AM alarm. The breeze was good, allowing us to set all sails once we rounded the little barrels at Stavoren. It was a wonderful day under sail, covering 31 miles back to our home port of Monnickendam. As we sailed into the harbour, we were greeted warmly by our fellow harbour mates. Although our usual spot was occupied, we found a temporary berth nearby. We took Reef for a long walk and then spent time on the aft deck, reflecting on our beautiful trip and how well we had handled the minimal challenges we faced. Reflections and Future Plans Our Baltic Sea adventure was a testament to our teamwork and the capabilities of our vessel. We're already cautiously considering another longer trip, but first, we have a maintenance plan to address. The WJ needs a paint job, and we plan to have her underside painted, the keel checked, and the rigging inspected in the autumn/winter. This journey has reinforced our love for sailing and the sense of freedom it brings. From the starry nights at anchor to the challenges of navigating busy waters, every moment has contributed to an unforgettable experience. As we settle back into our home port, we're grateful for the memories made and excited for the adventures that lie ahead on the horizon.

One of our favorite features is the excellent ventilation since we mostly live as "hookers" (aka at anchor) where the boat automatically turns into the wind so we stay cool and we don't need to battle mold. We also have starlink for easy off-grid life. Our 2400 watt solar panel array also means we rarely need to run an engine to charge our batteries. ABOUT US: We saved for a our future boat, sold everything that we owned, and shipped the rest in a container to Cape Town, South Africa. We then flew there and explored South Africa by way of a safari and touring Cape Town before moving aboard our boat. We then sailed to Saint Helena, Ascension Island, Fernando de Naronha (Brazil), Martinique, Sint Maarten (Dutch and French side), the US Virgin Islands (Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas), the British Virgin Islands (Anegada, Norman Island, Jost van Dyke, and Anegada), The Bahamas (Inagua, Crooked Island, Long Island, George Town, Staniel Cay, the Exumas, and Eleuthera). We then sailed back to the United States, making landfall in Cape Canaveral, Florida. From there our destinations are endless! Both Dennis and Ann grew up military brats with Army fathers. Dennis (the Colonel) served 30 years in the US Army and his retirement pension helped us retire in our 50s. Ann (the ship's Captain) wrote Test Automation in Python and Java. Dennis and Ann met on Match.com where Ann had in her profile "Do you want to sail the world with me?" Ann easily brought Dennis into sailing, and he loved the GTFOplan of retiring early and sailing the world. After many years of saving, living on one income but earning two, and cutting back on everything possible, they saved enough to buy a Balance 482.
