After a few years of studying and working hard we decided it was time to make a change. We needed a change that would allow us to spend more time together, give us a better work/life balance, and the freedom to travel. While we still had time on our side, we wanted to use it to live rather than use it to chase money. Learning to sail was the answer. In December 2021 we moved onboard Te Tāiko, a Chico40, and since then we have been so fortunate to explore many of New Zealand’s pest free islands and its beautiful anchorages. With our love of travel and adventure, this lifestyle has enabled us to experience so much more than we could ever have imagined. From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. As we travel a lot between many different countries, we need them more than ever because if we don't, we could turn up to a country by boat, having sailed for weeks to get there and they could turn us away. In addition , if we are vaccinated , we are less likely to have to pay for expensive PCR tests or have to deal with lengthy quarantines aboard our boat . Some countries even require you to pay for expensive hotels to stay in for 1 to 2 week quarantines. Here in the Panamanian jungle, they had a vaccination centre set up in the local school and for younger kids, you had to go to the hospital. To get to the hospital, we had to get the local panga( water taxi) and then either a taxi or bicycle and it was not always guaranteed that they would do it if a vial had not been opened that day. So it took a few journeys.... After all of that , we went exploring and found one of our most favourite islands in the Caribbean! How to beach a boat? Check this video where we did that with our sailboat (a monohull with a lifting centerboard) on the Brazilian coast. We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). I never thought dealing with a hole in the boat could be so satisfying. This week was a true test of DIY with your spouse. We had to coordinate two separate jobs while trying to talk to each other through the hull of the boat and let me tell you that proved to be a challenge. But we did it, and we are more in love with our Honu knowing how safe she is and that all of our exterior holes can now be plugged. There was a new vocabulary, sorry second language, that we had to learn as well. The “thingy” and “do-hicky” weren’t going to cut it anymore. If we wanted to get this project done and in an effective manner we had to learn how to communicate what we needed correctly. This might have been a bit harder on my part, but I’m not admitting anything. I love that we were able to come together as a couple. Not just a sailing couple but a regular old couple and work together to get this job done. If you have never had the pleasure before I would highly recommend replacing all your sea cocks, through hulls and plumbing. Episode 024 There are so many things to see and do in Rarotonga, BUT visiting Te Ara, The Cook Islands Museum of Cultural Enterprise, should be on your list of top 5 things to do in Rarotonga. We decided to see the Te Ara Museum on our way to Adam's kitesurfing lesson. Not really sure what to expect, we thought we'd just take a look. Instead we were presented with one of those unique moments where we were fortunate enough to meet Stan Wolfgramm, one of the founders of the museum. Stan is a natural story teller and it was clear to us within moments of meeting him that Stan is truly interested in people and the environment. We were so captivated listening to Stan that we never made it into the museum display. We visited the museum the next day, and as we walked through the display, a story of the Cook Islands unfolded which led you through the history of both its people and its environment. There is an art to telling a story and Stan and the Te Ara Museum definitely have this art. So much thought had been put into the display to tell the story of the Cook Islands and each piece thoughtfully placed with a meaning and story of its own. We visited the museum three times, each time learning something new and taking a different message how with us. No matter how many times you visit the Te Ara museum, you will learn something new with each visit. There's many different facets to the museum, including teaching and supporting sustainable practices and business development within the community. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. This week we transformed a person we met for 10 minutes 10 years ago into a life long friend. That's what a "small boat" do to relationships. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). After a few years of studying and working hard we decided it was time to make a change. We needed a change that would allow us to spend more time together, give us a better work/life balance, and the freedom to travel. While we still had time on our side, we wanted to use it to live rather than use it to chase money. Learning to sail was the answer. In December 2021 we moved onboard Te Tāiko, a Chico40, and since then we have been so fortunate to explore many of New Zealand’s pest free islands and its beautiful anchorages. With our love of travel and adventure, this lifestyle has enabled us to experience so much more than we could ever have imagined. From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. They let light in, which is important of course for a good mood and a lovely living space, but is also likely to keep mold at bay. Along with needing a custom cherry wood interior plate for a finished look, Steve needs to replace the glass, which is likely inappropriate for a boat, with sheet acrylic. Butyl tape is the go-to for many marine hatch applications. It does a great job of sealing between layers, and has a fairly good lifespan. And speaking of long-lived materials: acrylic has a longer lifespan than Lexan on boats.
