More progress towards carbon-fibre stanchions with fully sealed decks. Today we were using the router to round off the top edges of the FR4 stanchion bases. These will be epoxied onto the existing triangles that the the original stanchions were bolted to. A 26mm carbon-fibre tube will go through this FR4 and all the way through the deck into a hole filled with thickened epoxy. The stanchion tube will slide onto it. Our Stanchion Design follows what we learned from @Tulasendlesssummer in @ • DIY CARBON FIBER STANCHIONS Our free Sustainable Sailing book is at: https://sustainablesailing.codeberg.page/ If you would like to support us then we have memberships or donations on Ko-Fi! at https://ko-fi.com/sustainablesailing/ (apart from a small card processing % we get all your support which is much better value than Patreon). When we bought Vida in August 2019 she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). @boatfools #sailing #sailboatsforsale #boatsurvey This is The 5-Minute DIY Sailboat Survey - a 15-Point Inspection that you should be able to whip though in about 5 minutes. This is a top level, simple DIY list that will help you quickly determine if a sailboat is worthy of being on your potential wish list. You've got your budget, your place to moor and store your boat, now you just need your dream machine to make it all come to fruition. You have 5 sailboats within your budget and you don't want to hire a marine surveyor to look at everyone of them. So what do you do? You get out there and start kicking the proverbial wheels, or jack stands, as it were. You have the know-how and this list will keep you focused. Grab a large screwdriver, a notepad, a flashlight, and a camera and get out there! Sailing season is coming right up - don't miss another one! Below is more or less what we go over in the video. Have any questions? Contact us at boatfools1@gmail.com. And, if you're more experienced and this is boring for you, leave some tips, tricks, and hacks in the comments for the less experienced boaters out there! Thanks for watching and get busy sailing or get busy trying! EXTERIOR: Check for blisters Inspect keel joint (if not encapsulated) Ensure prop shaft isn't loose Confirm rudder alignment with keel (sight down from behind the rudder toward trailing edge of keel) ON DECK: Conduct tap test with screwdriver butt Assess deck and lazarette cleanliness Look for excessive crazing and stress cracks around stanchions Inspect standing rigging (if mast is up, on deck, or near the boat) BELOW DECK: Verify engine access and components (oil filter, dipstick, etc.) Check for excessive staining on sole floor Examine staining around ports and hatches Assess cleanliness and odors Inspect bilge, keel bolts, stringers, and framing Examine chainplates Do doors close and latch as they should?
Episode 051 In this episode Adam takes you through the three emergency steering systems we have on board our sailboat, Te Tāiko. The first is our emergency steering tiller that attaches directly to the rudder, the second which is our hydrovane self-steering system, and the third is soon to be the drogue we will have aboard. Tāiko's rudder stock is approximately 100 mm aluminum. Unfortunately, there have been cases where these rudder stock have failed. We have decided not to replace the rudder stock at present but we share with you what our contingencies are should we lose our steering or our rudder stock fails. We hope you enjoy it! As always, thanks for watching. Sincere thanks to Charlotte Rockstar Jones for composing and recording Te Tāiko's theme song. Please remember to subscribe, like, comment - it helps us out! A nomadic duo who traded land life for a life on the water. Follow us to see what we see and what it's like living a nomadic lifestyle. Currently exploring New Zealand but a big adventure is coming soon! In December 2021, we moved aboard our sailboat Te Tāiko, a Chico 40, and we have been fortunate to sail to many of New Zealand’s islands and anchorages. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. Our plan? We try not to make too many plans but plan to do blue water cruising. Whilst sailing New Zealand's northern coastline, we're completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements. In the meantime, follow along with us as we navigate this lifestyle whilst sharpening our skills sailing New Zealand waters. #boatlife #boat #travelvlog #digitalnomad #lifestyle #sailing #travel #sailinglife
Finally we have reached a decision regarding what direction we should go with regarding the keel. It feels really good to finally have reached a final decision after a lot of weeks considering different options - Should we keep the swing keel? Or cast a new keel ourselves? But before we made the final decision we removed the "wings" of the swing keel as a final evaluation. In this video we also start some other jobs that needs to be completed before splash day; we remove the propeller shaft so that we can replace the cutlass bearing and shaft sealing, and we also start to remove the through-hulls. We sailed to Bequia, the largest island in the Grenadines at 7 square miles. The Sail from St. Vincent to Bequia was only about an hour, hardly long enough to put the sails up! We anchored in Admiralty Bay out between Princess Margaret Beach and Lower Bay. We stayed for a week in Bequia - met plenty of fellow sailors anchored in the large bay, enjoyed miles of sandy beaches, numerous beach bars, restaurants and shopping. One of the highlights of our time in Bequia was Moonhole, a community built into the cliffs on the far edge of Bequia. In order to see it, we had to snorkel in the front bay. You may have watched a SV Delos episode 10 years ago, where they interview one of the owners. MOONHOLE HISTORY Moonhole derives its name from a massive arch formed in volcanic substrate through which the setting moon is sometimes visible. Founded by Thomas and Gladys Johnston in the 1960s, Moonhole is now a private nature preserve. In the late 1960s, the Johnstons retired from an advertising business in New York and founded the Moonhole community on the narrow western tip of the island. Tom and Gladys began building a house beneath the arch with the aid of local masons from the nearby village of Paget Farm. Using whalebones, native hardwoods, and objects recovered from the sea, they built large open rooms with sea views. Without wells or electricity, they collected rainwater from the roofs and stored it in cisterns for bathing and washing. The master bath had a large tree that grew right up through a large hole in the roof. Large windows facing the prevailing trade winds had plexiglass panes that could be lowered into place. The bedrooms surrounded a central dining room, veranda and large bar made from a humpback whale’s jaw bone. In the early years there was not even a road to Moonhole. People from Paget Farm walked in daily to bring in fresh fruit and freshly baked bread and to do any necessary cooking. https://www.moonholecompany.com/mission-and-history EXPLORING TOWN With our guests Bill and Pauline, we set off to explore town. Bequia has a really nice walkway that goes from town all the way to Lower Bay. It’s a longish walk, but plenty of places to stop along the way for rest, refreshments and swimming. We loved our lunch at Mango Restaurant, overlooking the water. That night, a quick stop at Bar One floating bar. We also hired a tour truck and saw the Friendship Bay side of the island, with the whaling museum. We tried to stop at Firefly for lunch, but when we sat down and could not get any service, we knew it would be a 2 hour ordeal, so we went on our way. Laundry service came to your boat! Very entrepreneurial! Cocktail Lab was a favorite spot to hang out - only for drinks and light snacks. After Bill and Pauline left, we woke the next morning to a western swell coming into the anchorage. Because the trade winds are always from East, this wreaks havoc in the anchorages, so we made a hasty exit and sailed further south. We did not know quite where we could find a safe anchorage, but it was better to be on the sea than anywhere else. We ended up at Sandy Lane on Canouan Island - a very good choice. Windy Work Installing Navigation Electronics - Ep. 307 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat
Upgrade your mornings with better coffee. Head to http://aeropress.com/acorn and save 20% off your order! Thanks to AeroPress for sponsoring today's video! Have we mentioned it’s been windy lately? Steve works on setting up the navigation electronics on the mizzen mast, wiring it into the boat, and getting everything up & running. The first move is to get the cables routed down the conduit on the mast. If all goes well, then he will bring up the bases. The wind is adding an extra element to this project, making it tricky to bring up the Garmin dome. It’s not going to be comfortable—or fun—but luckily, Steve is used to heights. With all the mounts in place and cables running down the mast, the next step is to get the cables through the house top and over to the navigation table. Steve also adds USB charging ports for use in the cockpit, which is Robin’s favorite spot to work in the summer. But for now, Robin brings her office to the beach while Steve works on the boat. Not a bad spot for a midday coffee break… Back on Arabella, Steve preps the cable gland to organize the cords for Starlink, radar power, and the communication/power cables for the satellite compass, satellite weather, and radar. The cable setup has been a great learning experience for Steve, figuring out what’s going on and how everything is organized. Living on a boat surely keeps him on his toes. Steve runs through Arabella’s system. Everything is on its own breaker, so it’s really easy to turn navigation gear on and off depending on what’s needed at the time. Spring is here, sorta, so hopefully all of this gear can be put to the test out on the waters soon. Fingers crossed! -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! Wir feiern mit unseren Verwandten die Weihnachtsfeiertage in der Schweiz, treffen ehemalige Arbeitskollegen und werden zu Nachtessen mit Verwandten und Freunden eingeladen. We take Zubenubi out of the EU to Tunisia for tax reasons.
Join us in this video where we share our experience of replacing the O-rings in the timing cover of our Volvo Penta MD2030 engine. If you've been dealing with an oil leak from the throttle lever arm, you're not alone. Tools and parts used in description....⬇⬇⬇⬇ We dive into the process step by step, tackling all three O-rings in the timing cover and even replacing the front shaft seal, which turned out to be surprisingly easy. While the job involved some elbow grease, it wasn't overly technical - making it accessible even for those without extensive mechanical experience. One crucial tip we learned along the way: when dealing with the injector pump, exercise extreme caution. Dropping the R clip into the engine can spell disaster. We secured it with wire before removal, a move that paid off immensely. Also, take care not to inadvertently bend the shims under the pump during the process. ⬇⬇⬇⬇TOOLS LIST BELOW⬇⬇⬇⬇ *We want to emphasize that we're not professional mechanics, and this video isn't a tutorial or a 'how-to' guide. It simply documents the steps we took in tackling this maintenance task.* Our primary references were the workshop manual and various online articles. One tool we found essential for the job was the Harmonic Puller to remove the pulley wheel. So, if you're facing a similar issue with your Volvo Penta MD2030 engine and you're considering tackling the repair yourself, this video might provide some insights and encouragement. Hafızalarımıza her yönüyle işleniyor. Her yol kendi içinde keyifleriyle beraber zorlukları da getiriyor. Doğrusu ülke olarak yaşam içinde öylesine zorluklar içinde harmanlanıyoruz ki videolarımızdaki 20 küsür dakikanın okyanusların mavisiyle, yağmur bulutlarının şahane grisiyle, toplumların oluşturduğu dinamiklerle geçmesini istiyoruz. Başka başka dünyaların, yaşamların kapılarını aralamasını hedefliyoruz. Denizde yaşam elbette bu kadar değil. Her an teyakkuz halinde olmak, binlerce yaşamsal bileşen içinde hiçbir şeyi ihmal etmeme zorunluluğu kaslarınızı betondan daha sert hale getiriyor. Bazen şikayet ediyoruz, bazen de güneşin ufuk çizgisine doğru indirdiği yüzüne hayranlıkla bakıyoruz. Rahmetli babam derdi.

LAHAKAI SAILING // S2 Ep64 // Welcome back to our sailboat restoration project. This week, we're taking it easy with a little DIY build – we're spicing up the space above the sink in our boat's head with a slick sliding cabinet. But brace yourselves, folks! Next week's shaping up to be a whirlwind of excitement with some unexpected twists headed our way. #sailingfamily #familytime #societyislands #frenchpolynesia #sailing #sailingadventures While anchored near Moorea, we have a scary encounter with some locals while swimming in the anchorage area. We realise we have broken a rule about the distance required between us and the wildlife but we wonder why we were confronted in such an aggressive way. It reminds us of the incident that had happened a few years previously when a 14 year old boy was killed by a power craft while he was checking the anchor. Soon after, we sail across to Huahine and find a beautiful beach where we have perhaps one of our most special encounters with a local there who teaches us how to make coconut bread but mainly brings us all closer together by sharing this very simple experience. Episode 050 We're in Aotea, Great Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf and so far it's been great. We've so far explored Smokehouse Bay which was just awesome. Our friends have now arrived, it's high tide which means it's time to cruise up a couple of tidal wetlands but we can only cruise up them with Tītī (our dinghy (tender)) at high tide and even then it's shallow. Will we get stuck? Are we about to be up a creek...but with a paddle? Who gets out when you venture into shallow waters? We also stretch the legs with a walk around Kaikoura Island. We hope you enjoy it! As always, thanks for watching. Sincere thanks to Charlotte Rockstar Jones for composing and recording Te Tāiko's theme song.

We get absolutely ROCKED out there 😳 We just arrived back to French Polynesia, and we were ready to make some moves to a more protected anchorage...but the forecast was not in favor. And after days of waiting around, we decided to brave the ROUGH conditions and trade one day of suffering in exchange for a peaceful anchorage and a good night's sleep. We bashed straight into massive waves, strong headwinds, and current for hours...and all three of us were on the struggle bus. It was every bit as gnarly as we had expected, and was definitely one of our more miserable sails we've had in recent memory. But once we made it to our spiffy new backyard it was totally worth it! Steve and Robin sift through a good amount of mail that’s been piling up. Be sure to pick up issue 297 of WoodenBoat magazine and check out the Launchings section to see Arabella's feature! With a climbing guide book for Nova Scotia and Newfoundland in hand, they can start planning their summer adventures—huge shoutout to the local folks who have provided support, advice, and overall amazing hospitality. Back in Granby, Steve spends time supporting his mom and dismantling the last of the boathouse. While in the area, he opens more mail, including some books and lines for the reefing on the main mast. While there’s a pocket of okay-ish weather, Steve works on getting as much work as possible completed on deck and up in the rig. He works on hoisting the sails and tying the lines, and comes up with a clever solution to install the tri-colored running light and wind reader on top of the main mast. Of course, this pocket of weather doesn’t last too long. With Robin away and the rain returning, Steve takes this opportunity to transform the cabin into a workshop. The plan is to assemble as many electronics as possible before they make their way on deck. Hopefully spring weather makes an appearance soon, because all of us—including Akiva—are tired of it. We'll look at starting with diesel and alcohol, cleaning soot and heater following a big mistake, see a flame out and preventing them, and replacing stove glass on a Sig 100 heater. At the end - mention of the next video!

Designers Roberto Biscontini and Lorenzo Argento have created a world of refinement in this 60-footer ocean-cruising yacht. With a hull length of almost 18 meters (60 ft), the Oceanis Yacht 60 has been designed with a remarkable and sophisticated silhouette that preserves its elegant design and excellent marine qualities. OPTIMUM DESIGN FOR SMOOTH SAILING The new cockpit layout provides a sense of ease and security: access to the foredeck is made simple via deep side decks. The two helm stations have been optimized so that all maneuver can be carried out without leaving the helm. Systems such as Ship Control and Seanapps provide control of all on-board systems and allow for easy maintenance. The bimini is available in 2 configurations. The rigid version has a central section that can slide forward to adjust the amount of cover in the cockpit. The crew will always be able to find the best compromise between protection and ventilation. The generous dinghy garage holds a 2.8 m jet-propelled tender. This tender is operated by an electric winch with a double wire system and guiding rollers to make it effortless to launch and raise. Learn more: https://www.beneteau.com/en-us/oceanis-yacht/oceanis-yacht-60 -- About BENETEAU -- The first BENETEAU boats sailed from the shipyards of Croix-de-Vie over 140 years ago. Since that time, the BENETEAU brand has been synonymous with quality and innovation to all those who have taken to the water – first by the fishermen who made their livelihood from the sea and then by the legions of recreational boaters around the globe. Over the years, our commitment to innovating and embracing ideas, no matter how unconventional, has been at the forefront of who we are in order to bring you the best boat possible. BENETEAU was one of the first boatbuilders many years ago to use computer-aided design (CAD) as well as lighter, stronger composite building materials. We’ve also been at the cutting edge of using greener materials and processes to do our part in protecting the incredible world which we explore. However, all this innovation doesn’t mean we’ve turned our back on tradition. One thing we’ve discovered in over a century of boatbuilding is that new-world innovations work best with old-school craftsmanship. This combination has resulted in some of the most iconic sailboats and powerboats in the world – supremely seaworthy yachts renowned for their sense of style, luxury, and comfort along with their creative use of space and new technologies. -- Philosophy -- We’re a lot like you. We love the water in all its forms – the ocean, bays, lakes, and rivers. And we love sharing the boating lifestyle with our family and friends. This love manifests itself in every BENETEAU built in any one of our many manufacturing facilities worldwide. Every BENETEAU sailboat and powerboat on the water reflects the best efforts of the finest architects, designers, and craftsmen along with the highest quality materials and the latest innovations. When you purchase a BENETEAU, you become a valued member of our BENETEAU family. For this reason, our after-sale service is second to none as evidenced by the multitude of National Marine Manufacturers CSI Awards for Excellence in Customer Service. At the core of this outstanding service is our exceptional dealer network. Every one of our authorized BENETEAU dealers will be there for you – from choosing the right yacht to the handover and beyond. Your dealer will be your able guide when it comes to maintaining your boat properly and will help you maximize the return on your investment when it comes time to step up to another BENETEAU – and it usually does! The Cape George 38 of 1988 stands as an emblem of excellence in long-distance sailing, hailing from the esteemed American shipyard, Cape George Marine Works, nestled in Port Townsend, Washington. Its dimensions are nothing short of impressive, stretching 11.83 meters in length, 3.55 meters in width, and boasting a draft of 1.80 meters (13.40 meters with the bowsprit), all while displacing a solid 14 tons, thanks to its robust long keel with integrated lead ballast. Crafted with a meticulously maintained Burma teak deck, this vessel is powered by a reliable Nanni Mercedes 72 HP engine, which underwent a thorough overhaul in 2017, and features a three-bladed bronze propeller. Adding to its maneuverability is a Vetus 95 Klgf bow thruster, supported by dedicated batteries. When it comes to anchoring, the Cape George 38 is well-equipped with a Light House 1501 stainless steel windlass, powered by its own batteries, accompanied by a Rocna anchor and a CQR anchor, each paired with 50 meters of 10mm chain. Its substantial structural diesel tanks hold approximately 800 liters, while the water tanks boast a capacity of around 600 liters. Onboard comfort is paramount, with a Webasto heating system ensuring cozy interiors, complemented by vents in the saloon and bathroom. The boat features two sizable cockpit refrigerators operating on both 12V and 220V power sources. Electronic amenities installed in 2013 include a Raymarine SXP 30 plotter, wind instrument, C90W digital radar, and a robust Raymarine pilot mounted on the tiller shaft. Accommodation-wise, the Cape George 38 offers a bow cabin outfitted with V beds, a dinette featuring two convertible sofas, and a well-appointed kitchen equipped with two burners, an oven, and an electric/motorized boiler. Its electrical systems are robust, featuring four 140Ah AGM service batteries from 2020, a 150Ah engine battery from 2023, and two 140Ah AGM batteries dedicated to the bow thruster and windlass, complete with their own charging systems. Sail inventory, dating back to 2013, includes a heavy genoa, light genoa, staysail, semi-full batten mainsail, and storm mainsail, all featuring UV protection bands, with the convenience of a lazy bag installed in 2023 for streamlined sail handling. Safety measures include a deckhouse roof repainted with non-slip paint. In June 2023, the vessel underwent extensive maintenance and upgrades, including the replacement of all hull fittings and valves with RANDEX fittings and valves composed of composite materials, approved by RINA and Bureau Veritas. Engine maintenance, anti-fouling painting, and various enhancements were carried out during this period, reaffirming the boat's enduring reliability and seaworthiness. It is an adult Disneyland, without the rules, or the closing time. Don’t be dumb or obvious in the way you throw cash around, or make a big show of expensive cameras and jewelry, and you’ll be just fine. There are also some local real-Mexico gems hidden in the sticky seedy rough of Cabo, if you go looking for them.
