Celina is still not recovered yet from the theft more than a month ago. However I would like to share this video with you which was made in November 2022. Celina came basically ready to sail, however as boat owner you will never have an empty to-do list. During our maintenance weeks we applied new anti-fouling, a new livery, we took care of previous damages and sealed the windows. We have 3 weeks to prepare our boat for our biggest sail yet. It's gonna be a 23 hundred nautical miles crossing from Brazil to the Caribbean. So, let's get started! This episode opens with a reveal of our plans to build a whole new arch system from scratch. We discuss how we ended up with our current 'franken-davits' with a brief blast from the past to our NY sailing days and first cruises on Calico Skies. We lay out our design considerations and wish list for the final product which include a filet table, D rings to ratchet strap the dinghy, easier access to our paddle board and a wider footprint to prevent water from entering the cockpit. for We have chosen to go with 1 and a1/4 inch stainless steel and discuss why chose this material over aluminum. We explain how our old davits put pressure on our stern resulting from flex and inherent weakness in our davit system and show viewers the damage we will fix and how the engineering of our new system will move the weight to the deck and further forward. Next we move inside to our casita to discuss our budget for what we consider to be a 'mini refit'. Big ticket items are the new arch, solar panels, new canvas, new rudder, bottom paint and epoxy and other blister-fix material. We also discuss several other costly items including our new transducers including a forward scan, a new VHF and a kit to service our through hulls among other things. We explain why we view this boat refit as different from projects we've tackled in the past and our desire to take viewers with us in an effort to be transparent about the amount of work cruising takes. Besides maintenance, system installations and repairs there are always going to be long periods of time spent in the boat yard when you cruise full time for years on an old boat. Bottom painting of our bluewater sailboat from start to finish! After striking an unidentified floating object (UFO) off the coast of Africa, we still had some repair work to do. That included stripping the barrier coat and applying new bottom paint. We did this in Uruguay to prepare the boat for its sail south, around the world, via Cape Horn. AD/Advertisement - AkzoNobel provided us with the bottom paint and other coatings applied in this video (International Galverette, International Intergard Yacht, International Intertuf, and International Micron Premium). Learn More Here: https://www.yachtcoatings.com/en/gb/that-feeling/sailing-sweet-ruca Previously on our boat, we were using AkzoNobel’s SeaHawk products we paid for ourselves, which were performing very well. After striking the UFO and damaging our rudder and hull, we needed to do a more comprehensive inspection of the entire hull, which included removing all of the bottom paint. This is an expensive and time-consuming process, which was not in our original budget to sail around the world, and insurance provides no coverage so far offshore. We were completely on our own. We took a chance and reached out to AkzoNobel asking if they would sponsor our channel, as at the time we were in Itajai, Brazil, and we are huge fans of The Ocean Race and knew of their involvement in a previous race. Did we think maybe we can tie something in? We were thankful to receive a reply and they agreed to provide us with the products and offset some of the costs. Before we could complete the project in Brazil, our visas ran out, so we had to call an audible and move the painting to Piriapolis, Uruguay. This is where having a company with worldwide product coverage really came in handy. In South America, it can be extremely difficult to source specific brands and parts for your cruising sailboat. Luckily we were able to find a great assortment of quality International Paints to use on our boat in Uruguay. We were also happy to find International Micron Premium. Which is a polishing bottom paint. We knew we wanted ablative paint rather than hard paint as we feel it performs better overall. It also allows for hauling the boat if needed and spending time on the hard without a repaint. Lastly, it requires less diving, just sailing at speed washes away any growth, which increases safety, especially sailing in the cold and dark waters of the southern ocean and fjords of Patagonia, Chile. We feel Micron is one of the best polishing bottom paints on the market and already had experience sailing on boats with Micron on board in the USA and knew it performed well. We had also already used Interlux InterProtect 2000E to fair our keel and completed a bottom on our Melges 24 with VC Performance Epoxy. We were familiar with working with the products and knew they worked well, as we would never put a product on our boat or accept sponsorship of something we wouldn't feel safe using ourselves, be happy with the performance, or recommend to a friend. The process included: Hauling and Blocking the Boat Remove all old bottom paint back to the existing barrier coat. Inspect and make any needed repairs. First load it with a few cups of dry compost material such as dry coconut fibers or the inexpensive horse bedding pine pellets from Tractor Supply. After each use you toss in another cup or two of pellets to help cover and absorb any moisture. But you don’t need to use very much because if the exhaust fan is left on there will not be any smell and it will dry out over time. The computer fan uses very little power so it should not be an issue to leave it on. If you don’t notice any odor then you could leave the fan off. The reason the common commercial compost toilets are so complicated and users often report there is no smell even without a fan is because they use more compost material and a stirring mechanism to buy the waste like in cat in a litter box. Designed by Jean Berret and launched in 1989, Soul Mate has beautiful lines with her raked bow and swept back transom. This is a two cabin layout with V berth forward with private ensuite and a huge aft cabin with second head and shower. The saloon is spacious, comfortable and practical with large folding dining table. The galley to port is substantial with large fridge and updated stove and oven. There is a dedicated nav station / desk to starboard. Soul Mate has enjoyed significant recent maintenance and updating. All cockpit teak seating was replaced new in 2017. She has recently been anti-fouled (Feb 2023) and engine serviced (Nov 2022). Many systems have been significantly serviced or replaced – windlass motor, hot water system, toilets, auto-pilot (new 2021), most sea-cocks, and keel bolts (keel bolts new Feb 2023). The shaft drive Perkins engine has enjoyed regular and professional maintenance. It’s centrally mounted which gives excellent access. This is a comfortable cruiser which actually sails like a yacht should. Soul Mate would suit someone seeking a well-built, quick cruiser with classic good looks.

Hydrofoils were first perfected in 1898. But hydrofoils can have significant limitations. The purpose of the foils is to lift the boat out of the water. As the boat's speed increases, the hydrofoils create lift equal to the sum of the boat and cargo weights. After almost 100 years of effort and money, no one has been able to overcome hydrofoil physics of sonic cavitation (read: massive vibration) at speeds in excess of 60 miles an hour. In addition, the depth of the hydrofoils determines the height of the hull above the water. This design geometry issue limits operational ability due to sea state conditions. Hydrofoils require expensive and high maintenance propulsion systems and make very inefficient boats when not operating at hydrofoil lift speeds. In this 4-minute video, Rhett Nanson, Shannon’s catamaran and hydrofoil chief engineer, points out how Amphfoil technology addresses and overcomes these limitations.
