The crew spends the weekend getting projects done on deck and down below. After receiving their mission briefing from Steve, everyone gets down to business. On day 1, Bill works in the head tying the gray water tank into the vent for the composting toilet. Up on deck, Jeff gets to work on the aft hatch while David spends his morning chasing down leaks on the deck under the propane tank. There’s been a few issues with leaks on deck, causing water to drip on the dishes. On day 2, a bell vent gets attached to the aft hatch to allow for air flow and reduced condensation. Steve and Aaron start to wire in the hot water heater. Steve addresses a condensation issue in the hanging locker and forepeak. Condensation is building up on the bronze straps, causing problems for clothes that make contact with the moisture. The team adds a fiberglass reinforced panel to allow for air flow, which will help keep the clothes dry. Noah brings a pig sticker for Steve, which is meant for a flag. When set up on the masthead, it can double as a windex—a visual cue on which direction the wind is coming from. Getting to meet people in the community has been such a rewarding aspect of this adventure. It was great having the crew out for the weekend, catching up and spending time together. We will be discussing how to care for and maintain cruising / racing sails. We will look at how they function and how proper maintenance can extend the life of your sails and canvas. We will also look at common problems and how to identify them and finally, how to know when it’s time to replace your sails.

This is the final stage of our double engine refit as we replace our old Yanmar 4JH4E engines with brand new Nanni N4.50s. We have built our own fibreglass engine beds, aligned both engines and now we just need to connect up all the fuel and water hoses and install new consoles up at the helm. We are so close to the end of this project and we can't wait to turn the engines on and see if they work! Ich nutze das warme Wetter Ende Februar und beginne erste Arbeiten an Deck innen werden die Wände geprimert und die Fensterrahmen vervollständigt Unser Segelboot Squib, ein Catalac 9M, ist in die Jahre gekommen, die Verkleidung hängt teilweise von der Decke, die Farbe blättert ab, die Elektrik auf dem Stand des vorigen Jahrtausends,..... Ein Refit steht an. Doch Broterwerb und Verpflichtungen lassen es nicht zu, monatelang in Griechenland am Boot zu arbeiten. Da wird schon 2018 die Idee geboren Squib nach Wien zu bringen, wo man jederzeit Zugang hat, der Einkauf von Material in der Muttersprache abgewickelt werden kann und alles andere seinen gewohnten Verlauf nimmt. 2021 war es dann endlich soweit, mit zwei komplett überholten Motoren und einem neuen Geräteträger starteten wir Anfang Juli Richtung Südfrankreich.Leider hatten wir für die gesamte Reise nur zwei Monate Zeit, deswegen hieß es die meiste Zeit Strecke machen. Doch manchmal nahmen wir uns die Zeit zu verweilen, uns Orte näher anzuschauen. #catamaransailing #leopard48catamaran #sailing #Canouan #mandarinoriental #sandylaneyachtclub After Bequia, we headed to Canouan, a little known, enigmatic luxury island in the Grenadines where the experience at Sandy Lane Yacht Club was quite unexpected and surreal.  We left Bequia in a BIG hurry when a very rare western swell came in which was caused by a storm coming down from the north.  Boats were rocking and swinging and it wouldn’t be long before we would get hit! So,  the next island south - hopefully away from the swell - was Canouan. "Canouan" comes from the Arawakan word for turtle.  The Arawakan’s were the original island inhabitants.  We were hoping to see some of the red footed tortoises during our stay. Canouan is one of the Caribbean’s most up and coming luxury destinations. Located in the heart of the Grenadines, less than 20 miles south of Mustique and 110 miles west of Barbados, the 3 square-mile island is surrounded by small bays and coves, secluded white sand beaches and one of the Caribbean’s largest coral reefs, offering incredible diving and snorkeling. It is said to be the island where billionaires go to get away from millionaires.   Most of the northern part of the island is private resorts - Mandarin Oriental and Canouan Estate Resort with a Jim Fazio designed 18-hole course.     There is not a lot here for people to visit if you are not on a resort. You do have easy access to Tobago Cays, Union Island, and Mayreau for more exploration. Sandy Lane Yacht Club We headed straight to Sandy Lane Yacht Club,  a luxury marina and resort, to hide for a little while, on the south side of Glossy Bay.  Brand new docks, modern amenities, shops, restaurants and totally protected. The executive airport is right behind the marina, making it convenient for the jet set, but a little noisy and you do smell the diesel at times if you are staying on board. We enjoyed the beach and the pool and tried to snorkel the reefs, but the swell was too rough. Charlestown - Friendship Bay We did visit the capital city of Charlestown in Friendship Bay. Beautiful waters, especially by L'Anse Guyac, a nice place usually to anchor by the resort there - also owned by Mandarin Oriental.  In town, we did not find much worthwhile besides the Soho Beach House resort.  Is Canouan Worth the Visit? In 10 years, we predict this island will be even more developed by the resorts. We did find our visit worthwhile. If we had more time, we also would have hiked around the island more. If the normal trade winds were blowing, instead of the western swell, we imagine we would have been able to snorkel the large expanse of reefs. Maybe next time.... Welcome to a week in the life on Arabella. Friday: The day starts off with a huuuge cup of coffee. The rainy day is the perfect opportunity for Steve to practice making eye splices with a double braided line. Robin and Steve spend time training to get ready for their summer plans. While Robin has been consistent with her workouts, Steve needs to add to his routine in order to be ready for the climbing walls in Canada. The Flash Board and some floor exercises provide a nice workout circuit, but Steve has a great solution for working on strength and training—the Force Board. This tool can help determine their max pull power, assisting with hangboard training. Enjoy the friendly competition of finding out who’s stronger… Saturday: Robin finds a little piece of magic during a trip to the beach. Steve and Robin take advantage of the beautiful weather and go for a bike ride. Sunday: It’s finally feeling like spring. There’s nothing better than waking up to a clear and sunny day. After a long, cold, wet, windy winter, this change in weather is more than welcome to stay for a while. Monday: Steve takes some time to address the comments on the use of the plastic cutting board up in the rig to mount navigation. While this solution isn’t permanent, it works great for now and will allow the gear to be tested out on the water. Tuesday: Steve checks to make sure there are fasteners available for some pieces that need to get installed, including the hinges for the afterdeck, chalk for Victoria along with some cleats, and a bottle opener. With a work & play organized for the upcoming weekend in Harwich Port, it will be nice to have some projects ready to go.
