There's continuing progress on the fore hatch, the 'midship skylight, pitch scraping on the boat deck and some melting to waterproof the deck... and of course all the little bits and bobs and parts for the boat interior are getting thorough sanding. We could probably have a whole separate channel that just covers sanding. Maybe we've sanded away a boat's worth of wood. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Acorn to Arabella is a wooden boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur wooden boat builder building a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that classic wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY boatbuilding project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Isabella's engine issues are still not solved and it leaves us with lots of time to organize and do some DIY. We spruced up our closet, ha-ha, and junked it out again. Steve worked on the diverter valve in the VIP head. He started to strip paint from and refinished the African mahogany in the hallway. We checked out the windless. Our scuba regulators made by Cressi Sub were old enough that it is hard to find parts. The decision was made to not rebuild them and purchase new gear. It's not all work and no play! We danced, ate raw oysters and did some more dancing. Karen even found time to do some sunbathing and Steve did a little singing. Thankfully very little. Tips on Tuesday - Today we perform basic maintenance on the bow thruster, but we also install new Silicon Seals. This will help stop water intrusion around the bow thruster. We also install a water alarm near the bow thruster just in case of a leak. Better to know about water in the bow sooner rather than later! I know the video is long and maybe boring for some, but it's to help people understand how to maintain the bow thruster. Hopefully you will enjoy... However, the marina is spectacular , set on an island full of wildlife and it feels like having one big back garden full of animals to hang out with. We find somewhere to do schooling and then find the beach and vote that its the best body boarding ever. Music in this video deserves a Thanks to : " http://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-..." Here at Shoreline Marina in Long Beach, CA we have a boat auction twice per year. In this video I bring you along with me to watch bidders buy boats for super cheap. Some of them didn't even get a bid and weren't sold at all. The opening bid for a sailboat is $400 and they still didn't sell. These sailboats are run down and dirty. Most of them wouldn't be worth fixing up and doing the whole DIY sailboat refit but some of them are worth fixing up. Although this was a good auction with decent boat inventory I've seen better boats at past auctions so be sure to subscribe if you want to know when the next auction is happening and see my next boat auction video. LEAVING Indonesia by SAILBOAT - Sailing Indonesia EP 194 Our visas are about to expire, therefore it's time for us to leave the sunny shores of Indonesia. We are sailing north from Jakarta to the granite boulders and white sand beaches of the tin mining island of Belitung, to clear customs and stock up on a ridiculous amount of junk food for our sailing teenagers. Anything to keep them happy for the passage ahead. But first we need to handle the ill effects of sailing through the sea of garbage, as we leave Jakarta, and the small matter of some stormy weather that makes life on our sailing catamaran quite unpleasant. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. January 6th 2023, and we have been waiting for this day a long time. T pontoon in Marina Las Palmas is buzzing with a mixture of excitement and nervousness, as the 24 Viking explorer rally boats with their respective captains and crew complete their final tasks and checks. Today is the day we have been preparing our minds, bodies and boats in anticipation of the journey from this marina to the Caribbean Island of Grenada. The initial stage will take us to the port of Mindelo in Cape Verde which could take up to 7 days before the onward crossing to Grenada. Kevin and I joined sailing yacht (catamaran) Irradiance on New Year’s Eve, just in time to celebrate with everyone already on the rally. Lots of music, singing and drinks were complimented by fireworks and fun. All of these guys needed to let off steam as for the last 2 years almost their entire thoughts and goal have been this adventure to set sail across the Atlantic ocean. The miles we will cover in this next week will be around 878, when we arrive in Cape Verde we will have a few further days of preparation for the 2000 mile sail to Grenada. It is a daunting prospect yet Irradiance our vehicle, has been carefully and thoroughly looked after by Peter and Diane, we have no worries with regards to the boat preparation and maintenance, however no one can be complacent when out at sea at the mercy of nature and its fickle ways Over the last week Peter has guided Kevin through the handling of the engines and power systems, while Diane has taken me through her plans and ideas for stocking, storing and management of the provisions and medical kit. Today the tasks are complete for now and our thoughts are all on a safe and gentle departure from the dock out into that big open ocean Like, share and comment if you enjoyed this video Watch related video's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtSgWO980Hg&t=25s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGrbHYTKyQc&t=2s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfpZzkPZTko Feel free to share this video Checkout our channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCu_TXBvLqimTelcfKu2Dkfg Stay up to date by going to our website at http://sailingkejstraladventures.weebly.com/ Follow the Blog http://sailingkejstraladventures.weebly.com/blog Keep up to date on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/Kejstral/ AUDIO ------------ Under the Creative Commons Licence A huge thankyou to all our subscribers and followers. Episode 027 Well, it wouldn't be New Zealand if we didn't experience a low pressure weather system every couple of weeks. Its location in the South Pacific ocean positions New Zealand near the 40 degree latitude, and with its mountainous and small landmass, means the westerly winds usually dominate. The tropics to the north of New Zealand and Antarctica as well as the southern ocean to its south also influence our seasonal weather. After all, they don't call it the roaring 40s for nothing! New Zealand's weather is known for being 'predictably unpredictable'. But what has made sailing even more challenging for us in the last 12 months are the effects the La Niña has had on our weather, at times making the weather even more unpredictable. Bringing with it strong dominant easterly winds and lots of rain. We have spent many days seeing out strong winds and low pressure systems since moving onboard Tāiko fulltime. In this episode, we have been on the hook for a week when a low pressure system makes itself known in the forecast. We head to a mooring ball we secured to sit it out. Since becoming fulltime liveaboard sailors, we have experienced at least 7 adverse weather systems on anchor (one on the mooring ball) and a number in the marina, making the draw of the tropics and trade winds very appealing. Please note that this episode was filmed in November 2022 (so it is not quite summer) showing you how far behind we are with our videos! We hope you enjoy it! As always, thanks for watching. Sincere thanks to Charlotte Rockstar Jones for composing and recording Te Tāiko's theme song. Please remember to subscribe, like, comment - it helps us out! After a few years of studying and working hard we decided it was time to make a change. We needed a change that would allow us to spend more time together, give us a better work/life balance, and the freedom to travel. While we still had time on our side, we wanted to use it to live rather than use it to chase money. Learning to sail was the answer. In December 2021 we moved onboard Te Tāiko, a Chico40, and since then we have been so fortunate to explore many of New Zealand’s pest free islands and its beautiful anchorages. With our love of travel and adventure, this lifestyle has enabled us to experience so much more than we could ever have imagined. From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. In the meantime, follow along with us as we navigate this new lifestyle whilst sharpening our skills exploring New Zealand waters. #boatlife #boat #travelvlog #digitalnomad #lifestyle #sailing #travel

We are pushing hard during the night, sailing deep into the dark and stormy void of the roaring forties and the South Atlantic Ocean, setting our 4th reef as we prepare for heavy weather and charge offshore toward International Waters and the pirate laden grounds of the Chinese fishing fleet. All the while a storm with possible 9 meter waves and 50 knot winds is approaching us from behind. About Us: We are two young racing sailors that decided to leave life on land and accomplish our goals of sailing around the world and learning about and experiencing different cultures. Originally from the Great Lakes, we left Newport Rhode Island in July of 2019 after refitting our boat DIY style. We then sailed to Maine, and from there down the East Coast of the USA, around Cape Hatteras, to the Bahamas, Back to Miami, and then to the Virgin Islands. From there we headed south to Grenada to escape hurricane season, then back up to St. Maarten where we launched our first Atlantic Crossing to Horta, Azores. We made a quick trip back to the USA in July of '21 to defend our Chicago - Mackinac Race overall title, then it was back to cruising the Canaries, where we launched for our second Transatlantic voyage, sailing to Brazil in South America and on to Uruguay. Our goal is to sail around the world via Cape Horn, and that is where we are headed now. Capturing footage to share this epic adventure with you as we round the horn and venture into the canals and fjords of Patagonia, Chile. Want To Learn More About Us and See Where We Are in Real Time? Fellow boaters - I'm thrilled to share my latest project with you: MaintenanceROS! Crafted from my experiences aboard Starry Horizons, it's designed to simplify vessel and maintenance management, making life on the water even more enjoyable. Explore https://MaintenanceROS.com and enjoy an exclusive 20% discount for the first 6 months using promo code 'outchasingstars'. Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** If you want to go sailing, you need to raise the mainsail. It can be like an intricate dance, and it's incredibly frustrating when that dance gets interrupted due to a questionable lazy jack design. We've come up with a way move the lazy jacks outboard and create a lot more room to raise the main. No more having to lower and try again or wait and hope for the batten to spring free! ================= Splicing Resources ================= Splice Dyneema Around a Low Friction Ring - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFCJa7tK51k Dyneema Chafe Cover - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thyLfoOHe-4 Dyneema Loop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5CZzAo0IxE ================ Affiliate Links ================ Out Chasing Stars is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to amazon.com. We're Dani and Toryn and we're working on a lifeboat conversion named Luja. Our lifeboat conversion has an electric motor and will have many creature comforts for its eventual life on the canals of Europe. In the meantime, we plan to cruise our lifeboat conversion around the Gulf Islands of Canada, but before we do that it's time to keep going with DIY and get her ship shape and ready to go! In this episode we install, cut out, and reinstall the glass windows on our lifeboat conversion. We're using tempered, laminated glass, which will give us an amazing view of the water around us, but which have been fraught with challenges. Try, try again, and try again after that, right? Thanks so much for watching and following along on our journey! Don't forget to like and subscribe :)

So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). In a huge storm the starboard hull slammed on the key, because of which we lost the bulb that protected it. So, now we built a new one from pvc pipe, a toilet floater, fiberglass and epoxy. I dreaded this job, but with trying and trying again, and again, it actually turned out fine! You'll find Anja's blogs at https://www.anjakeesmaat.com/blog

STREET FOOD Jakarta best FAMILY feast for under $1 Sailing Indonesia Ep 193 We have sailed our catamaran into Batavia Marina, Jakarta. Refuelling the boat is a priority but involves a bit of risk taking as we sail through the Jakarta traffic with five jerry cans, two people one scooter, and of course get to pay for fuel we didn't receive. Not so for refueling our sailing teenagers. A short stroll from the marina we immersed ourselves in the welcoming Kota Jakarta community and indulged in the abundance of street food on offer. Here you can feed a family for the incredible price of seventy cents per person, for what has to be the tastiest Nasi Goring (fried rice and egg) that we have tasted on our travels. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #TheCruisingKiwis

Will these sailors brave the biggest storm of their lives, or turn back to safety? Find out in this epic episode where we are at the Point of No Return! With massive waves, sustained winds over 40 knots, and gusts over 50 knots, our small sailboat is no match for the fury of the South Atlantic Ocean. Watch as we push ourselves to the limit facing the ultimate decision, risking everything for the thrill of the open sea. A little slip of a computer key makes it so Friday's video is live a day early. Enjoy! Life aboard a sailboat revolves around the saloon table, and this week Steve makes progress on a tilting version of one while our new crew member, Scott, builds the cover for the fore hatch. If you look closely, there are a lot of types of joinery in the shop this week, and there are a great many carpentry approaches that could be taken for everything we build. Scott, our new crew member cut his first dovetails here in the shop. The navigation station for the cockpit comes a little closer to done as well, and a slew of warmer days means we can remove the large plastic tent to see, for the first time, the cabin house fully faired and with port lights installed! The countdown to launching this DIY wooden sailboat is clicking by, and we're glad you're here on the journey with us! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a wooden boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! In this video, I cut the holes for the inserts that will eventually hold the Vetus port lights. I will also glue the inserts in place. I have had some trouble with my GoPro getting a card error and I end up losing all that I have filmed. This has happened a few times now, even after replacing the SD card, if anyone has had any similar issues and knows a fix I would love to hear from you.
