It was a somewhat complicated process, but in a day and a half, we finish the install of our Atlantic Towers Stern/Dignhy/Solar arch. It doesn't all go smoothly of course (it is a boat after all), so what's the solution? Cutting MORE holes in the boat, this time with a jigsaw! The spring broke in our Bayliner Bowrider 175, nothing like have a boat you can't start. In this video, we show how easy it is to install the Sierra marine ignition switch in our boat. After installed we tested and the Sierra marine ignition switch work as expected in our ski boat. Was really impressed by how plug and play the Sierra ignition switch was in our boat only taking minutes to install. The hardest part project was fitting between the boat seat to get under the dash. After seeing how Turkish Gullets are made in a Bozburun boat yard (and seeing where Roman Abramovich had his yacht built!) we sail to Marmaris and traverse the bureaucracy of agents, crew lists and the Turkish blue card scheme aka 'poo cards'. Turkey's 'pump out' scheme is not as easy to follow as we first imagine.. and we break a few rules and we break a few rules - but it doesn't tarnish the friendliness we encounter in Turkey. Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** There's a saying that if a sailor claims to have never run aground, they're either on their first sail or lying. We're certainly not on our first sail, but we've been fortunate that all previous encounters with the sea floor have been with soft mud or sand. That was about to change though, thanks to an uncharted bommie. It was a low speed impact, but still enough to cause some damage to our mini keels. And since there aren't a whole lot of haul out facilities in the Indian Ocean, we chose to do another haul out in Thailand. For the second time in a month... Needless to say, we weren't loving the cruising life at the moment and things got a bit worse before they got better as the yard misplaced one of the supports and caused damage to our hull. Sigh... But the damage wasn't catastrophic and the rest of the haul out was super productive as the mini keels got fixed, our fiberglass repairs were finally done, we added more bottom paint, fixed our emergency escape hatches, got work done on our sail bag, replaced our lazy jacks and gave Starry Horizons a nice wash and wax. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

We've done steam bent frames for the majority of Arabella, now, in the stem and the stern, it's time to make some sawn frames. Where the bow and stern come in to the centerline timbers, the shape of the hull is fairly sharp. Steam bending frames in these areas would not be very easy nor ideal. Not only are they very short, which would make them difficult to bend, but they also would have to have some sever twist in them. Because of this, making single sawn frames for the bow and the stern were a better idea in our minds. This gave us the opportunity to test our hand at making sawn frames. Making patterns, finding timber with curved grain to cut them from and then shaping them before installing them back in their place with a different kind of bronze floor. In this video we explain our process for picking up patterns and making the frames. In the next episode we will show more of the work being done organically. We were pleasantly surprised with this boat. She is a 2008 custom Gorbon 53' deck salon, built in Turkey for over 1.5 million dollars. She still feels like a million dollar yacht today, but she costs MUCH less to purchase now. The dual helms, deck salon, and secondary interior helm station, combined with the massive amount of functional exterior and interior space make this boat a real competitor with today's modern catamarans for comfortable cruising. and living aboard. To go with our grey boat theme we opted to paint our custom speaker plates. I did like the wood grain but it just didn't work with anything else in the boat. We used paint to seal the wood then added Kiwi Grip to add texture. All the materials used for this project were scrapes from other projects so the cost was so low just time. The reason for this project because the old speakers in the boat were rust 6x9s and we had 6.5 speakers lying around. The holes they had cut into the boat were in a place that when the 6x9 was mounted it had a large gape because of a curve in the body mold. The new speaker panels to about an hour to cut out and paint, and covered the 6x9 hole without the gap, while covering the rust and ugliness left by the old speakers. How to figure out your gear ratio on most cars without taking the diff cover off. We have an underpowered jeep with big tires, this needs a gear change or an engine change to overcome the larger tires that reduce our running gear ratio. Our truck with a v8 is more forgiving to changes in tire size the 2.5-liter engine in this jeep, but we have to know our current ration before we can make an educated decision on gears we need to change to. This jeep had a dana 30 and dana 35 axles so when we do change the running gear the lowest we can go is down to a 4.88. With the tire size on the jeep a 4:88 gear should give the jeep the same power it had with factory tires and a 55 MPH it should run the engine at 2300 RPM. I did have a turbo Miata with a 4.88 gearing with much smaller tires and the RPM for that car at 55 was over 3000. Would not want to run the 2.5L in the YJ Jeep at that RPM all the time but with the larger tires, it would be a 6.50 gearing. We dive into the typical issues with hull maintenance, osmosis in fibreglass and what causes it, how to know if it’s a big vs small problem, how to prevent and repair it and we talk about how significant the damage and repair bill can be. David shares examples of shortsighted shortcuts boat owners and tradesmen take and the extra problems they cause. We talk about the product choices for owners when it comes to anti-foul paint and the differences between budget and premium and how the life expectancies differ, the paint thats better suited to warm and cold climates and racing versus cruising application options. We discuss some of the ugly things that can happen to poorly maintained hulls and the construction materials to avoid when buying a second hand yacht. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

Planking has been a very fun challenge though a bit of a challenge it has been. Learning to fit the oak planks to each other has its intricacies. We need to make sure the plank fits well fore and aft but also that the bevels match so that we can put in a good bead of cotton caulking. All of this is being done with thick, unruly oak planks! Once we finish these last broadstrakes, which will be the last oak planks, we will be moving on to cedar planking. Cedar, being a much lighter wood, is likely going to be much easier to work with. We are very much looking forward to seeing the difference this makes. But, before we get to those, we will have to wrap up a few more tasks... but that's for another video! In the mean time, we come across a few challenges with this last oak strake that we had not anticipated. Launched in 1997, Araluen is a fantastic version of Hunter's ever popular cruising yachts. The Hunter is an incredibly popular family cruising yacht thanks to a very well thought out layout above and below decks. Many of their features have been copied by other yacht designers over the years as their reputation for creating affordable comfortable cruising yachts has evolved. Safety & Convenience Hunter were thinking of crew safety and comfort when they designed the mainsheet traveller which sits forward of the dodger away from the cockpit. Similarly, the genoa sheets lead to the companionway winches, leaving the whole cockpit area free of any clutter and very safe for small children. Araluen is fitted with electric dual controlled anchor winch making anchoring easy with a double bow roller so you can leave the anchor situated on the bow when picking up a mooring. Flush decks making it safe to walk around – or throw a beanbag on the bow for a spot of tanning. Performance The B&R rig removes the need for a backstay. Stays are pushed to outer beam and run the length to the keel reinforcing her fractional rig. Handling is easy with and efficient fully battened main while single line reefing makes it much easier to handle with a small jib. Tacking is easy and there is less overlap at the mast due to a smaller headsail design. This also reduces winching through the tack. She is easily handled, stable and offers a very smooth ride. Cockpit Araluen has a lovely spacious cockpit and there are no lines to get in the way when you’re entertaining as. All lines lead under the dodger along the coach roof to jammers and winches located out of the way to clever rope stash compartments. It’s a very safe space for kids as the cockpit is very well enclosed with the addition of two beautifully varnished princess seats where you can enjoy all the action while staying out of way. The yacht has safety rails which open on both sides as well as offering excellent open access to the water from the stern with a diving platform, swim ladder and a fresh water shower when you exit the water. There's a big sugar scoop stern with a solid boarding ladder and lots of space for diving or snorkelling or fishing gear. There's a stainless steel magma barbecue secured to the aft cockpit rail. You can enjoy hot sunny days under the well shaded cockpit with full bimini and dodger. When moored, there's an additional boom tent. Designed for family cruising in comfort and style, the 376 is the perfect sized yacht for weekend or holiday cruising. ***NOW Araluen is set up for weekly and holiday cruising with family (or friends) and would make a great addition to any sailing family or group of friends who want to make the most of our wonderful waterways in a medium sized yacht with the space of a 40ftr. Below decks and Galley Hunters are open, light filled and very spacious yachts. Araluen's interior offers an abundance of natural light which is complimented by her faun coloured suede upholstery and light varnished timber interior. She was originally fitted out in 110v with air conditioning although this has not been used by her current owner. The yacht is fitted with 240v outlets throughout. She has a dedicated navigation station opposite the galley. There’s a large electric toilet with macerator and holding tank, combined with a separate curtained off shower cubicle - great for privacy and avoids wetting the whole cabinet. Our plans to stay in Southport NC through the end of September were cut short by Hurricane Dorian. So, with time only for minimal preparations, we left Southport and traveled south - yes south to return to our home port at Bohicket Marina. Why? It was a better hurricane hole - better protection. So, after a long 28 hour overnight sail, we immediately started to prepare PILAR to withstand Dorian's 150 mph winds in case the eye would decide to come our way. See what we did in this video. Then it was time for my brother to visit and we got to explore our first Thai Hong, a very shallow river and then found a Buddha statue that even made Thomas look short.
