We are learning so much from the planking process. After having cut and installed the garboard planks, we are now on to the first broadstrakes. These next couple of planks are going on right after the garboard and are also oak and need to be pretty sturdy. As these planks are also still fairly low on the boat, we are still dealing with the stiffness of the bottom of the frames and the bronze floor timbers. This makes these planks, also a bit of a challenge to instal. Not only that, but in contrast to the garboard plank, we do not have the 90 degree angle of the rabbet on the bottom side of the plank. This means that we need to match the angle where the top of the garboard (and all subsequent planks) meet the frames. This is a constantly changing bevel all the way down the boat. To cut this bevel quickly and efficiently, we borrowed a tip from a shipwright ;) (Thanks Lou!). We modified a skilsaw to be able to cut and compound changing bevel with the use of a clamp screw to adjust the angle of the cut as the saw is running. This has been a fantastic way to cut this bevel and has taken so much time out of the process of fitting the planks. Although, not without a learning curve. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. We've been getting a lot of you guys asking for some more affordable and smaller boats than what we've been showing, so we've reached out to a few boats that we think would be good to tour and this is the first "smaller" boat we're touring (For clarification, this is definitely not a small boat, just in comparison to the other's we've been on recently it is smaller). We've got more on the list that are in the 30-40 foot range and some even smaller so stay tuned for those. We really enjoyed touring this boat. We both believe it to be in good shape and well set up to sail the world with minimal necessary work. It's ready to go! The Spindrift 46 was built by Formosa Yachts using the same molds as the Formosa 46 from 1980 to 1984. Ron Hillier of Brisbane, Australia oversaw the building of this yacht which was to be sold in the United States for Bristol Yachts of Newport Beach, CA. For the Australian market, they were called the Hillier/Peterson 46. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Make sure you make an informed decision on your next boat with this tool: http://sailingsoulianis.com/shop/ltl-boat-buying-dashboard/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The current asking price is $99,500. I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** Having guests visit is always a blast, especially when those guests are so interested in the realities of cruising life. Our friends Denitsa and Niki actually VOLUNTEERED (well... one of them volunteered the other) to help out with boat projects. I couldn't pass up an offer like that, so together, we crossed a big item off the to-do list. Not to worry though, it wasn't all work on their visit. We had lots of fun too; exploring Langkawi, celebrating American Thanksgiving, teaching them how to paddleboard and taking them snorkeling for the first time. Our fishing adventures were slightly less successful, but we did manage to catch something (spoiler alert... it was trash. 😢) and even get the sails up for a little while. All in all, it was an action packed week and I don't think we scared them off the cruising life too badly! Thanks for watching! We were truly taken aback by this 65 foot steel yacht. At an asking price of $225,000, it has the accommodations of 50' or bigger catamaran for a much more affordable price tag. Typically catamarans with similar accommodations are million dollar boats. We're constantly looking for boats that have a ton of bang for your buck and this one certainly fits the bill. A few things to note: This boat has twin diesels, which great and is not typical for monohull sailboats. It also has a huge engine and equipment room which isn't typical. This boat is truly setup to take you anywhere on the globe in comfort, including high latitudes, with it's heavy-duty steel construction and protected helms. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Make sure you make an informed decision on your next boat with this tool: http://sailingsoulianis.com/shop/ltl-boat-buying-dashboard/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more information about this Yacht please contact the owner, Roderick Nassif at the email address listed below: rorynassif@yahoo.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthelines/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/learningthelines/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We set sail on the tail end of some stormy weather and stow the dinghy on deck to make sure we don't lose it! We sail for 4 days with some pretty strong winds and big swell and decide to skip Sardinia on our way to Sicily as the wind is in the right direction. [BTW sorry about the sound quality in this episode - we know we need to improve!] Without a weather forecast, we get caught out in a storm and our main sail gets another rip in it when we accidentally gybe. It is scary not knowing how long the storm is going to last as we are quite tired after several nights at sea on night watches keeping warm and the boat and children safe. We are a family with 3 children and make our own electricity and water, homeschool the kids and do our own boat maintenance. Our dream of cruising and exploring the world's oceans is matched with a desire to live a more off-grid and sustainable lifestyle. A background as RYA instructors, flotilla skippers and RNLI crew only partly prepared us for the challenges of this live-aboard lifestyle! WANT a Chance to Come Aboard? https://www.patreon.com/nahoa Keeping a sailboat running and afloat is a constant, never-ending effort when you're on a mission to sail around the world. An average day almost always contains some sort of boat maintenance. The problem is sometimes repairs require a technician or specialized tools. And in some countries there are no spare parts. Your options are to either fix it or well, fix it! The Philippines may have some of the most ingenious and skilled technicians we have come across to date. With some simple tools and a wealth of knowledge they were able to completely rebuild both our alternator and windlass. The added bonus? We saved thousands of dollars by not having a West Marine available. Winning. BE BRAVE. We painted on the Interior Rubber Strip in our boat with KiwiGrip and it worked better than we expected. This was used to replace the rubber strip, we think it works great, won't mold, and be very easy to clean. New rubber trim to go around the boat was going to cost over $100, and this we used the kiwi grip leftover. It turned out great and will not mold like the old rubber that caught water did. Not only did the kiwi grip look good, tieing the floor into the rest of the boat, it dulled the sharp edge of the fiberglass and filled the screw holes.

It's on to the port side Garboard! We wanted to show a little bit more detail on what goes into installing these big planks. It can be a little bit of a fight to get them to fit just right. This one also had a little imperfection that needed to be dealt with before installation. We have some pretty amazing lumber to choose from in our piles, but there isn't always the perfect piece for the job. There happened to be one small knot in this garboard plank that we didn't want to include. To get rid of this, Steve cut it out and fit in a graving piece in it's place. With that fixed and the plank ready to be bolted on, we ran up a bit short on time as the 2019 WoodenBoat Show was that weekend. We took a couple days break and spent some time with friends around boats. We also attended talks by two of our friends. Andrew Guest who is restoring Rosalind (https://www.patreon.com/restoringrosalind). We mentioned him previously when he helped us pick up a Bridgeport milling machine and Seneca Falls metal lathe that were donated to us, and we sent him home with Victoria's old diesel for Rosalind. We also attended Sailcargo's talk by our friend Danielle Doggett (Director of Sailcargo). If you haven't heard of them, you should check them out. They are building a 148ft schooner in Costa Rica to use as a sail cargo ship along routes up and down the west coast of the Americas. Get more information here: https://www.sailcargo.org/ And if you are interested in supporting, they are looking for investors! We are steadily moving forward in the planking process. Next up will be the broadstrakes and as we move up there will be a couple more things to tackle before we can finish the planking process. Stay tuned and thank you for all the support! The Lagoon national park area around Faro in the Algarve is well known with sailors around the world as a great place to safely anchor while waiting for the right weather to transit down to the Canary Isles or into the Med. We didn't actually do enough motoring to properly test it however so apologies for not having that in this film. We will give a video update in a future episode, but in the meantime I do have some stats from using the alternator a bit now so will write out what I've found here: Firstly on advice from experienced marine engineers that you get much more longevity by running the alternator at below full capacity I set the 'belt manager' to 3 on the regulator. This means you will not get full capacity out of the alternator but it will be less stressed and last longer. having the belt manager on 3 is supposed to drop the output by 21% and it seems I get about 95 Amps at cruising revs when the batteries are able to accept full charge so that seems about right. There are also some comments on the alternator film that people have experienced Balmar failures due to excessive fan belt dust. I would always do everything possible to avoid creating fan belt dust, that's why lining up pulleys and tensioning the belts properly is important. You need a tensioner on a twin belt system, levering the alternator over and tightening it up won't cut it! In real life use, after a night at anchor I'm typically at 60-70% state of charge on the house bank (580AH AGM) So running the engine to leave the anchorage and raise the sails, usually about 1 hour, gets my state of charge up around 15% so 75-85% This is about right as the internal resistance of the battery goes up to a level where bulk charging is slowed to such an extent that solar is a much better option anyway. A no wind passage where you're motoring for a period of time will easily bring the batteries back to full charge which is good for the batteries. We get enough days like that in the Med. to give the batteries an occasional full charge so we don't have to rely on shore power to do that. Basically then I think the alternator is doing the job it needs to do & I'm happy. I'm still a bit shy of total power for long term voyaging without resorting to the Generator. We only used the Genny once in the last 4 months. But the power I'm short of is more the lower amperage long term charge which for me will probably be more solar. We could go to wind, but I'm very reluctant because of the noise, even the best modern designs are intrusive to some degree. Hydro is also an option, but difficult to fit on a canoe stern. Also reducing power draw is always something to look at. I've done everything possible for the moment I think, but there is one big saving we could make which is to fit wind vain steering at not use the autohelm. This is an attractive option for all the other benefits it brings, but it has the same problems of fitting to a canoe stern and is expensive. If you're interested in the technical aspects of sailing, i've uploaded some maintenance videos of the boat lift to the 'Tech Corner' page of our website... http://www.sailingfairisle.com/tech-corner.html We edit these episodes as we go along so they are always right up to date, so please follow us on Facebook to get an insight into what's coming up in the next episode.

We are Jo and Rob and we are here to share our sailing adventures with you. In 2016, inspired by the likes of ‘Delos’, ‘Sailing La Vagabonde’ and ‘Gone with The Wynns’, we sold up everything we owned and bought our 40ft, Fountaine Pajot ‘Lipari 41 Evo’ sailing catamaran ‘Double Trouble’. We had no sailing experience whatsoever, so the past few years have been a huge learning curve. We thought it might be fun to document our travels for anyone thinking of following a similar lifestyle. So far we have visited 7 different countries and sailed over 13,000 nautical miles. We have had many unique experiences that would not have been possible in our prior life and we don’t regret a second. We're both super keen on protecting our precious environment, so amongst other things, we both follow a plant based diet. You wont find any fishing footage on this channel!
Time to clean the exterior of our sailboat and to start taking things off the deck to prepare the boat to be painted. If you are new here... we are a Brazilian couple that have just bought a 44ft hot galvanized steel sailboat (Dinieper Tropic 1200) and is on the mission of bringing her back to life after 22 years abandoned on the hard. Once we are done, the plan is to sail her to our home town Florianópolis so we can finish building our land base, a Tiny Shipping Container House that we are building ourselves without any prior experience. Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** Disclaimer... ships in camera are much closer than they appear! In order to continue our Southeast Asia adventures, we had to make our way up the notorious Malacca Straits. This meant we were once again tangling with the big ships, with the added complication of lots of small fishing boats as well. Oh and the trash is still present, which has an annoying tendency to wrap around props. The winds and currents in this part of the world can be quite tricky, with sudden storms coming up that can bring northerly winds and currents that can be 2+ knots. The best forecast we could find was one with no wind at all so we topped off the tanks and with Amy's cousin Sarah onboard, we went for it (PS: Yes... I know there is some footage that's upside down. When I'm editing in Premiere, it's right side up and since we're in a place where data is super slow and $10/gb, you're just going to have to live with it. haha) Thanks for watching! Originally built in 1972, Durbeck made some really heavy duty cruising yachts, built to go anywhere. The hulls on the fiberglass Durbecks are extremely thick and overbuilt, leading to a heavy-displacement cruiser like this one. In our opinions, this boat is a great deal for what it is. All old boats need work, but this one is pretty ready to move aboard and start a cruising lifestyle. The biggest things I would tackle would be the electronics, sails, and some cosmetic work, but for the price you can't beat this boat. I doubt you'll find a cheaper boat over 50 feet in this good of condition. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Make sure you make an informed decision on your next boat with this tool: http://sailingsoulianis.com/shop/ltl-boat-buying-dashboard/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This boat has been sold! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthelines/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/learningthelines/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. Do we like the results of KiwiGrip? Does it show grime and dirt? What would we have changed? We answer all this in our video. If you want to try KiwiGrip yourself, we have left links below, and if you like the deck paint, go back to that video and see how we did it and our final thought. When we choice Kiwi Grip for our boat what we wanted was, easy to apply, nonslip, and no toxic fumes. Well after repainting the floor we were highly satisfied, Kiwi Grip checked all these boxes and cured so fast. We liked it so much that in the next video we opted to paint the fiberglass edge that had rubber with Kiwi Grip. In this episode we get some feedback about our keel from Ant and Cindy, from SV Impavidus https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzHQmOL_aZx9qMSeSHTUMaQ They are such amazing people and helped us out massively! They have their own channel where they give advice and tips on everything to do with boat maintenance, from electrical problems to maintaining your exhaust - 100% worth a watch! We had some very worrying times in the last episode when we hit a rock and were so scared we had done some major damage to Chels, but on this occasions, it seems we have got away with it - phew! We explore the beautiful town of Fornells, Menorca, before leaving to head round to the nature reserve on the east of the island. We do some goosewing sailing and are pretty impressed with our speed in such light wind! Our yard is doing great and we are really hoping this Aeration from TruGreen will help. If you have new sod this may have to wait, our sod was a month old and it still got tore up. They were on a ride on Aerator and when it turned, it had like a dozer action on the ground ripping up the new sod we installed in an earlier video. A manager did come out but it seemed more like lip service than anything else, the manager also said that I can't record their trucks our people. Every interview or recording of people before was with their verbal consent, but TruGreen corporate wants to be in charge of the narrative and they don't like amateur reviews like this. There is a fine art to planking a boat and we certainly are learning that by putting on Arabella's Garboard. This is one of the hardest planks to fit, but that just means it is a perfect test for us to learn the intricacies of planking. Arabella is going to have oak garboards and broadstrakes before we switch over to cedar for most of the rest of her planking. Not only are these bottom strakes a bit difficult to fit, but the fact that they are thick oak boards just makes it that much more challenging. We needed all the clamps we could muster and a few tricks along the way. Including getting some car jacks in play. In the end, the garboard bent into place and we are very happy with how it fit. This is going to be one solid plank and give us some serious confidence out on the ocean going through storms. We also finally get to start seeing some of Arabella's shape coming through, which is really a big treat after so much hard work. LIVING ABOARD: Sailboat Projects & Marina Life I Sailing on a Whim Ep.9 On this episode of Sailing on a Whim, we start to tackle our never-ending list of sailboat projects and get a taste of what marina life is like in Florida. This crazy adventure started in early 2018 as we started researching learning how to sail, buy a boat, outfit her, and take off for a life on the open seas! There has been a huge learning curve trying to make all of this happen and we want to share with you everything that we have learned and have some fun along the way. We are excited (and a little nervous!) to share this journey with you. We hope that you learn a little from our experiences and maybe inspire you to make changes to live the life you want! —————————————————— SPECIAL THANKS Angler's Cove Restaurant and Bar - https://www.facebook.com/anglerscoveatpoi/ Port of the Islands Marina - https://www.portoftheislandsmarina.com/ —————————————————— SUBSCRIBE & FOLLOW https://www.sailingonawhim https://www.youtube.com/sailingonawhim https://www.facebook.com/sailingonawhim https://www.instagram.com/sailing_on_a_whim https://www.twitter.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— CONSIDERING BECOMING A PATRON https://www.patreon.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— GEAR: Cannon EOS Rebel SL2 https://amzn.to/2y2Hty1 Cannon Powershot G7x Mark II https://amzn.to/2S6rOVu DJI Mavic Air https://amzn.to/2W2OYgz GoPro Hero5 https://amzn.to/2S8FizU Fantasea Line FG7X II https://amzn.to/2xSuY8q Rode DDG-GO Deadcat https://amzn.to/2Y4AT4G DJI Mavic Pro Plantinum https://amzn.to/3eU5tUT —————————————————— RECOMMENDED READING: Learn to Sail – https://sailingonawhim.com/learn-to-sail Cruising Life – https://sailingonawhim.com/cruising-life Maintenance & Repair – https://sailingonawhim.com/maintenance-%26-repair Inspiration & Adventure – https://sailingonawhim.com/inspiration-%26-adventure —————————————————— MUSIC FROM EPIDEMIC SOUND —————————————————— The Abacos area of the Bahamas was devastated by Hurricane Dorian in September 2019. Following Simon Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/finding_simon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/findingsimon Website: http://simonstiles.com/ Asking Simon - Who are you?

Receive a 2 month free trial by clicking this link: https://skl.sh/learninglines ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We're back to working on Freebie, but we've got to be a little creative and choose our projects wisely because until the construction of the home she's docked behind is finished, we have limited access. We chose to work on the new companionway stairs because most of the work can be done at our apartment away from the boat. We're keeping things simple with this build. We're starting with piece of marine plywood and fiberglassing that. That board will be faired and painted white and attached to it we'll install teak and white oak steps. We're still debating if the supports for the steps should be glassed into the backing board. I'm leaning towards yes at the moment, but we'll see. Let us know what you think of the project in the comments down below, and be sure to offer up any suggestions for us on how to move forward! We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. How much did our abandoned boat cost? Well, that is the most asked question everyone have been asking since we posted a tour video of our "new" sailboat. So, we decided to answer that on this week's episode. But we won't talk only about that. We also answer question like: how much we believe the refit will cost? How did we pay for the boat and how will we afford to pay for the refit? Why did we name the channel "Odd Life Crafting"? Well, all this answers are connected, so if you are curious you can watch this episode and hopefully it will all make sense. ______________________ Support our series: http://www.patreon.com/oddlifecrafting (Become a PATREON to get instant access to behind the scenes, extra pictures, perks, and even more) or you can donate through PayPal: eduardocassol@gmail.com ______________________ Check our products on our online store: https://teespring.com/stores/odd-life-crafting-store You can buy products on Amazon using our link and support us (you don’t pay anything extra for this): https://amzn.to/2LwE3th Where we download our songs from?
