We arrive in Syracusa, Sicily to pick up two friends as crew to continue our journey East. First we enjoy the food from the markets, the streets, icecream parlours and a restaurant before we stock up the boat and set sail again. Apart from some bits of boat schooling, food becomes a big issue aboard as we try to eat a balanced diet and work out who stole the chocolate biscuits/ cookies. See how a small problem can become a big issue when you are stuck at sea for five days! We are a family with 3 children and make our own electricity and water, homeschool the kids and do our own boat maintenance. Our dream of cruising and exploring the world's oceans is matched with a desire to live a more off-grid and sustainable lifestyle. A background as RYA instructors, flotilla skippers and RNLI crew only partly prepared us for the challenges of this live-aboard lifestyle! Got our boat windows on and they look good, also as the boat driver I don't want to get wet. LOL The weatherstrip we found on Amazon worked really and we have already used it for other projects beyond this like the speaker pods and Jeep projects. I loved working this project with my wife, she has an eye for detail and really knows how to prep before painting. There was a lot of corrosion, yes aluminum does corrode, very important to wash your boat after any saltwater contact. I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

This our 4th service, 5th encounter with TruGreen and we've only had a few issues to report. In this video, we are going over our concerns. We are in contact with TruGreen to see what can be done, that update will be in our next video part of this series. We are still really happy that the weeds are going away and the HOA is off our backs. TruGreen secret weed formula is awesome and we would use this part of the service only in the future. Now that summer is ending we really want to know how this yard will hold up through the Florida winter. With all the bent frames installed in Arabella and all the bronze floors in place, we can now work on installing the sole beams. The sole beams are the members that will span from frame to frame and support the cabin sole inside of Arabella. We are installing these now because it will allow us to shape the ends of these to fit perfectly to the contour of the inside of the planks before installing the planks. If we were to install the sole beams later, we would have a hard time fitting them to the existing shape whereas if we do it now, we can just fair the ends using a batten on the outside of the frames as if it were the planking. While we were working on installing the sole beams, we also got a very important and long awaited delivery. John from Hansen Marine and Brooke from Nanni Diesel came by to deliver Arabella's brand new motor ( Nanni Diesel N4.50). It won't get installed until after we are done planking but it is great to finally have that paid for and in the boathouse waiting to go into its new home. Thank you to all of you who made this a possibility and for Hansen Marine and Nanni Diesel for the generous help. And of course to John, Brooke, Thad and Nevan for helping deliver it and move it to the second floor of the boathouse on one of the hottest days of the summer so far!! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. We're back to working on Freebie, but we've got to be a little creative and choose our projects wisely because until the construction of the home she's docked behind is finished, we have limited access. We chose to work on the new companionway stairs because most of the work can be done at our apartment away from the boat. We're keeping things simple with this build. We're starting with piece of marine plywood and fiberglassing that. That board will be faired and painted white and attached to it we'll install teak and white oak steps. In this video we glass in the supports and start fairing in preparation for paint. Let us know what you think of the project in the comments down below, and be sure to offer up any suggestions for us on how to move forward! We appreciate the help! We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way. In this video, Sailboat Rudder Rebuild, After Unstepping the mast in our last video, it's now time to get the rudder removed and see what over 30 years of bluewater crusing can do. It's important for us to do some of these big jobs on Balachandra now as we are planning to cruise to the carribean for up to a year so she needs to be completely reliable. In this video I remove the rudder, cut it open, inspect, clean, and replace the rudder core, then re-glass the rudder sealing it back up, then put it back on the boat (ALL IN ONE VIDEO!) We FINALLY got on board with PATREON! If you like our videos and want to see more/better videos, more often you can become a patreon supporter: https://www.patreon.com/sailingbalachandra If you like these videos, please SUBSCRIBE to see more, and be sure to give this video a like! In August of 2017 I sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat, then sailed it over 300 nautical miles to Halifax Nova Scotia to spend a cold Canadian winter in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic. Sailing Balachandra is our YouTube sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos and La Vagabonde, which documents the sailing adventures of myself and the occasional crewmembers(s) as we navigate the east coast of North America and beyond. We also dive into lots of DIY boat projects both above and below decks, and share with you all of the pros and cons of living aboard in a cold climate.

This boat was built in 1986 as a mobile sawmill for harvesting exotic woods in remote locations. It was then acquired by the founder of Crocs who had it refit in 2012 and used it as a way to promote the brand. It has since been donated to AMI Kids to be used to raise money for the charity. Hannibal is a Chesapeake Bugeye Ketch, a design developed in the Chesapeake Bay originally for Oyster Dredging. Obviously Hannibal had a different life than most of her sister ships. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Make sure you make an informed decision on your next boat with this tool: http://sailingsoulianis.com/shop/ltl-boat-buying-dashboard/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This boat has been sold! On this episode we installed new batteries in the boat, we show how our electrical system works, how we get energy to our boat and we also talk about which equipments we have, which ones are working and which ones are not. If you are new here... we are a Brazilian couple that have just bought a 44ft hot galvanized steel sailboat (Dinieper Tropic 1200) and is on the mission of bringing her back to life after 22 years abandoned on the hard. Once we are done, the plan is to sail her to our home town Florianópolis so we can finish building our land base, a Tiny Shipping Container House that we are building ourselves without any prior experience. We finally arrive in Sicily and find shelter in the harbour. We explore the wonders of the city and then attempt to continue on our journey South until.....we manage to get 3 lines around our propellor as we try to leave. Find out how we get the propellor free again while eating lots of icecream. Fellow boaters - I'm thrilled to share my latest project with you: MaintenanceROS! Crafted from my experiences aboard Starry Horizons, it's designed to simplify vessel and maintenance management, making life on the water even more enjoyable. Explore https://MaintenanceROS.com and enjoy an exclusive 20% discount for the first 6 months using promo code 'outchasingstars'. Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** It had to happen sometime... Thus far, all our haul outs had gone smoothly and easily. But this experience hauling out at PSS Shipyard in Satun, Thailand was our worst one yet. We managed to fix the leaking through-hull that was the reason for the haul out easily enough. But several errors from the yard meant we ended up with more on the to-do list and stuck on the hard for longer than we'd planned. Oh and before this, we got stuck deep in the mud while clearing into Thailand. Sigh... No, this was not our best introduction to a new country, not by a long shot. Thanks for watching! When we started our aluminum boat widows restore the chipping paint and corroding was bad, now they are so pretty. In this video you will see how we restored our boat windows, this would work on any metal frame window. It was a lot of work, and it is much easier to do with the windows off. Well we sid this job was easier to do with the windows off, but getting the windows off was a bit of a challenge. The screws were nice and corroded, most had to be drilled out. Once out 90% of our time was spent cleaning, sanding, and prepping, the paint was the easy part. Once painted we did let the window dry for a few days before installing, don't rush our you may be reworking something. You don’t need expensive masks and scrubs - you probably already have these ingredients lying around your place - come join me as I show you how simple it is to create your own luxurious spa-life facial. Well, it’s a spa-like situation here in Savannah on the boat! See below for the recipes and a list of all products I used in this video. Bikinis & Martinis is the video series for the ladies, and covers topics ranging from emotional health to physical well-being, from the point of view of Lisa, a novice sailor who works full-time from their Lagoon 440 Catamaran. Shot on location from wherever they are, Lisa knows first hand that it’s not always bikini’s and martini’s when you choose to live your life at sea. In fact, sometime’s it’s doing laundry in a bucket, dirty hair, sticky skin, and dragging anchor. But when the sun is shining, the seas are calm, and the boat isn’t broken, it is magical.  If you want to support the video efforts, please SUBSCRIBE, give a THUMBS UP, and COMMENT so we can get to know you! This video is part of our boat work and maintenance series. In preparation for repainting our hulls, we repaired damage to our gelcoat with a two part marine epoxy, PC 11. We show you the steps we took to clean up the damage, apply the epoxy, and then fair the epoxy before paint. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We can't produce quality inspirational content indefinitely without the support of our fans. On this episode of Sailing on a Whim, we continue to tackle our never-ending list of sailboat projects and that’s when the reality starts to set in that getting the boat ready for cruising life is more work than we realized. In need of a break, we check out the Ten Thousand Islands area in Florida and explore an uninhabited island for the day! This crazy adventure started in early 2018 as we started researching learning how to sail, buy a boat, outfit her, and take off for a life on the open seas. There has been a huge learning curve trying to make all of this happen and we want to share with you everything that we have learned and have some fun along the way. We are excited (and a little nervous!) to share this journey with you. We hope that you learn a little from our experiences and maybe inspire you to make changes to live the life you want! One of the great parts of boatbuilding (or maybe the hardest part about learning boatbuilding?!) is that there are many different ways to do things. And they are all correct! Steaming in Arabella's frames is a good example of this. All her framing so far has been steamed in after we have cut pockets in the centerline to hold the butt ends of the frames. At this point in the planking process, we have come up to a point in the bow that had a wide section missing a pair of frames due to the mast step being in the way. We needed something to attach the planking to and keep it from rising up, so the only logical thing to do was to steam in the frames that belonged there. The process of steaming these frames, is exactly the same as all the rest except for the fact that they do not get pocketed into the centerline. These frames have their butt ends shaped to fit between the planking and the centerline. They are then screwed in through the planking and into the centerline to be held in place as we bend them to shape. Since we only had two of these to do, we didn't want to light up the giant steam box we have. This would be a waste of wood and time to get all that water up to a boil for just two frames. So, we built a small steam box out of a length of PVC pipe. Our setup wasn't ideal... but you live and you learn! Welcome to Port Vila, Vanuatu! Vanuatu is truly the last frontier of the South Pacific and this week it did not disappoint. It took me literally a week to figure out how to get a decent internet connection and even then it's rarely good enough to Skype the Grandparents. This week we find a Superyacht on a reef and have a ton of fun at a DIY Wet and Wild Adventure park! I will be posting a video every other Monday at 10am (UTC +11 - Solomons and New Cal time) while we move through Vanuatu, the Solomons and PNG. (Internet Access Depending) This region is not the best for internet access but I'll do my best to stay regular!

Update 18 August 2022: There have been numerous complaints this year about C-head taking orders and payments and not shipping the product. Alternatives are Nature's Head, Air Head or you can find numerous DIY versions described online on RV and camper van sites. Hi everyone! When we were moored in Forster, Dannii came across this awesome loopy yarn and decided to create a beautiful blanket out of it. After choosing some beautiful blues and whites to compliment the colours of the ocean, Dannii spent a couple of months hand knitting her blanket. She is very proud to have finished her creation and thought to share the final product and a tutorial on how to make something similar. This video will show you the steps of how to complete your own loopy yarn blanket. The two brands Dannii used are: Moda Vera Loopy Yarn and Bernat Alize Blanket-EZ | Yarnspirations We really hope you enjoy this video, and can create something new and beautiful for your own boat or home! :) Love our videos and want to help us create more content? - Become a Patron on Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/sailingbluefin Please subscribe to our channel here at: https://www.youtube.com/c/SailingBluefin and let us know in the comments if you have any questions or just want to send us a message :) Follow us on social media too!

Come join me on this journey to hear first hand how it feels, and in this case, how I make my hands look and feel pretty with a gel manicure. This week we're gonna start the real transformation of our SAILBOAT! Time to sand out the painting and to finish all the welds! Duca took some TIG welding classes!! All of our sailboat repair and maintenance blogs are now hosted on our dedicated maintenance channel, MOTHERSHIP MAINTENANCE Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/c/mothershipmaintenance An edited version of this video is now hosted there. How do you change an impeller on a water pump? My advice is if it ain't broke don't fix it! I wish I'd heeded my own advice on this maintenance job. A yearly engine service showed the impeller was fine, but I thought I'd change it anyway. WHY?! To be fair the pulley was already cracked so needed replacing so I guess it wasn't all wasted time :/ PLEASE NOTE: YouTube have disabled comments on family channels because they sometimes feature kids. After cleaning the boat seats for the gazillionth time, we tried NeverWet from Rust-Oleum on it. Hindsight we should have got the silver NeverWet from Rust-Oleum, we may try it later. We have also left a link below for where we got ours, ordering with our link helps us grow at no added cost to you. After using this for a few months we would probably only use this on the boat Bimini. NeverWet will make things like your seats feel rougher, which feels nice, but it also made the seats get dirtier faster. The product does work as advertised just don't the longevity of the product is there.

Leaking lead acid batteries on a sailboat are bad news! Leaking Lead acid batteries have eaten a hole inside our boat...and now we need to rebuild the battery box on our cruising sailboat BRICK HOUSE, because a lead acid Battery leak or lead acid battery fumes have caused a lot of acid corrosion, melting, and dissolving of the battery compartment causing the wood floor to rot out under our bunk as battery acid ate it all the way through to the bilges. Patrick Childress explains what he thinks may have caused wood corrosion in the battery compartment, shows you the extent of the damage caused by leaking lead acid batteries, and what he plans to do to prevent it in the future. We have always had water-miser caps, but not on this latest batch of batteries. Perhaps it was the use of these Battery caps...we don’t feel they were keeping things dry on the batteries...or possibly it was from NOT using them this past year. He explains how he believes the wood was destroyed by the acid in our Trojan T-105 lead acid batteries, during massively bad weather we had this year, in the Indian Ocean, or overfilling of the battery water. Was it the gasses emitted during equalization of batteries? Was it spilling of electrolytes after overfilling the battery with battery water, or spilling out during rough weather? He takes you through the demolition of the tabbing and wood floors, and bulkhead right through to the galley until he gets to solid wood. He then begins the repair of the rotten wood with fiberglass. Next time he shows you the rebuild of the battery compartment, floors, and walls. The battery box will soon be stronger than ever, and resistant to battery acid. The question everyone is asking...is this an argument for upgrading to LiFePO4 lithium iron phosphate batteries? Sailing the world/Sailing around the world is not always about cruising remote islands and traveling. Sometimes, you have to go in to a boatyard, RIP the sailboat apart and do serious boat restoration and boat repair, diy, like when leaking lead acid batteries eat a hole. Sometimes you have to hire professionals and sometimes it just a lot of hard work yourself to repair a sailboat, and make it seaworthy again. These marine batteries, due to the corrosion caused by leaking lead acid batteries could have been a big disaster on the high seas if we didn’t make fiberglass repairs to where more than 350 pounds of lead acid batteries sit and power our boat. Patrick Childress calls on his past experiences in rot repair on old houses, to fix the wood rot on the floor of our battery box/battery compartment. Sail life, and Sailing the world necessitates many hours of boring sailboat repair with lots of dust and dirt. Rebecca was very glad to be away from the boat, visiting her parents while this video was being filmed but will be back this weekend to start lots of boat repairs herself. Maybe next time, we go to LiFePo4 lithium batteries. We just found out...same problem with the start leading acid battery on the other side of the boat! LifePO4 batteries may be our solution.. “Freedom Won” in South Africa, who produces a new kind of marine lithium battery set up for sailboats. (http://www.FreedomWon.co.za) If you are concerned that “drop in” LiFePO4 batteries with built in BMS modules aren’t ready for the marine world, but that putting in a whole DIY lithium yourself is daunting, Freedom Won is a GREAT compromise for World Cruising sailboats. They have the most expensive, most advanced BMS, prismatic cells made by one of the top quality cell producers, instead of the cylindrical cells that the drops ins are criticized for. This is all enclosed in an aluminum casing so that it makes it very easy for a beginner to deal with yet you have full access to programming the BMS down the road, and replacing parts if it it becomes necessary. With the drop ins...something breaks, you get a new battery! Not always possible in the remote corners of the world!
