Annapolis seems to have some sort of magnetic pull on us in the late fall 😂, this years challenge is to escape before the first snow falls..can we do it?! This town is a great stopover for us as we make our way up and down the east coast. We have lots of friends that live here and you can basically find any boat part needed. Calico Skies is in need of some TLC after years of non stop travel (approx 30,000 miles) so we are using this time to perform maintenance and refresh our spare's/provisions. The first project we dive into is adjusting the valve clearance on our diesel engine with the help of Matt from MJ Sailing. This is a periodic maintenance item that we haven't had the chance to perform as of yet. The engine sounds great adjusting the clearances. We are greeted to a 35knot northerly blow indicating that the season is changing. We take advantage of the wind and go on a boy's mission ripping across they bay in Andy and Charli's fifty five foot performance catamaran. What a ride! We hit speeds over 10knots! Just like that it is time to go! We push our way through the square Chesapeake Bay chop ever south, racing to get off the bay before a strong southerly comes in. We complete our transit of the bay in two long days. Once we enter Norfolk we are amazed by the sight of all the warships at Newport News. This is a special spot to take the boat through, huge aircraft carriers, buzzing planes and helicopters. There is a lot of work going into restoring Victoria's old mast to be our mizzen mast. We already set up a sort of lathe and jig to cut kerfs into the mast so that we can then bring it down to a six inch diameter. To do that, I used a combination of a power planer and a hand plane to get down to all the kerfs. Once smooth, I'll put it on rollers for the final touches. In the mean time, Steve keeps working on the bulkheads and gives us a quick refresher tour of Victoria's other parts we'll be able to reuse. Did somebody say 100 year old Honduran Mahogany?! What a crazy journey this 346Nm non-stop sail without engine was. The most stressful part being entering the Ponce inlet at night in big swell without an engine. We really wanted to make it as far North as possible up the Florida coast to fix our Yanmar engine while hurricane season was starting. It was a long 55 hours but the autobahn of water that is the Gulf Stream definitely helped us get there faster and ahead of some serious wind. This was filmed at the end of April 2020. BOATYARD JOBS on our SECOND-HAND SAILBOAT which consist of earthing/bonding the engine to the anode, antifouling, polishing and getting some shiny new sailboat anodes. Last week we had to face some bad news when we had a rigging inspection which left us with a rather large list of refurbishments, and a rather large hole in our pockets! Whilst Rigit UK got to work on the mast, we had two weeks to get some of our other sailboat jobs done. Due to covid restrictions and needing a weather window, we couldn’t undertake the DIY sailboat projects ourselves, so we had to get some help!! Luckily, we have an incredibly good friend, Robbo, who just so happens to be an electrician (although not a marine electrician). We also met a new friend, Craig, from Bright n’ Clean who helped with the anti-fouling, anodes and giving Indiana a wax and polish! Thank you so much to both of you. We begin our journey to restore Indiana to her former glory and hope to get the mast stepped in the coming weeks too, so she’ll be ready for sailing around the world! Just kidding, but we’d at least like to get her outside of the marina walls this year! Greece has started easing its lock down measures and has allowed boats less than 7 meters to go out for recreational fishing, so we take the opportunity to launch "GOAT" our rib to take a trip along the coast. We are hearing rumours that travel through Greece could be permitted by the middle of May, we hope that is the case as we would love to stay in Greece for this summer season, but between BREXIT and Covid we are unsure of our options. Also in this episode we climb the rig to replace some deck lights, while up the rig a safety line block breaks and we have to abort the work and replace the block. We also carry on with our refurbishment of the interior vinyl by replacing the cabin lining in the lower saloon, don't worry we run out of vinyl pretty soon, its now April and we will be sailing somewhere, even if it's back to the UK ! The smell of ATF 4 smells great when your Slip Yoke Seal fails, here we show you have we fix this. My wife was the first to smell this as we clearly showed in the video, my sniffer ain't that great. As the leak got worst you could see the seal for the transfer case leaking on the floor. You have to fix this, especially on a jeep because you don't want to run your transfer case dry or fill it with water as you trail and the leak reverses. We have included all the tools and parts used in this project below. The gasket scaper made it real easy to get through the small gap between the transfer case and the slip yoke seal easily removing it. Once we got the seal replaced our steer drive pump filled the transfer case with new ATF 4 oil quickly while not making a mess. Yes, they can be a pain when they go wrong, but in most cases, problems are caused by laziness (furling when under load for instance) or operator error (eg., not syncing the speed of the outhaul with speed of the in-mast furler). While checking a DIY fix on our aluminium foil extrusion from last year. I noticed the repair had not held, so it was time to take the gloves off and do the job properly this time. So, I cut off the damaged part, re-drilled the bolt hole and re-enforcing that hole with an aluminium sleeve before securing it place with plenty of polyester filler. I believe Amel now to a repair kit to fix the issue but this method is much cheaper and can be done with materials from any chandler. It was one of those rare jobs that was as straight forward as it sounds, the only problem was fitting the fiddly delrin spacers back between the mast and furlers. Today we get into replacing the rear brakes on our 1995 Porsche 993. Ours is an early car and these came in a few flavors, but the basic process is the same. If you have a later model without the vacuum brake boost or with the "ABD" (Automatic Brake Differential) option ("S"s and Turbos) then every few flushes you should contact a shop that has the tool to open up all the valves associated with that system to get a complete flush. Here's a DIY demonstration of raising and lowering the 35' mast using a hinged tabernacle, whisker pole, tackle, and manual anchor windlass on a 28' Pearson Triton. The same principal should work for larger masts as well. Sketches and photos are available if you contact me through atomvoyages.com. Despite the natural advantages of using the boom as a gin pole and dropping the mast forward, the mast must hinge aft on most boats because the jib furler would get in the way and since the mast is stepped forward of boats centerline if it was dropped forward there would be too much spar overhanging the bow pulpit when lowered. And it works out better because the windlass is at the bow and the transom is a good place to secure the mast support roller. In my case, I use intermediate aft shrouds so it makes sense to hinge it to drop aft. If you don't have any shrouds suitable for tying off at the same level as the mast hinge pivot point then you could use halyards to control the mast from swinging sideways. If you had 6-1 tackle you might be able to use your cockpit sheet winch if an anchor windlass is unavailable. Just make sure it's thru-bolted with backing plates and have a second person on a safety line the first time you try it. Update: A viewer replied to my question of load calculation formula and said the max load on the windless line is H*W/(5.66*L) where H is the mast height, W is the mast weight and L is the length of the gin pole. The load above the tackle without the 4:1 purchase is 4 times higher. In my case the mast is 35'. Pole is 8'. Mast , rigging, pole and raising hardware weigh about 170 lbs so I would guess the load on the windlass line would be 526 lbs without the 4:1 purchase and 132 lbs with it. Adding friction losses for tackle and windlass brings it up to around 170 lbs. This info is useful for you to calculate the size and strength of components required. Warning: Raising your mast is dangerous so don't try it based on this video alone and make sure you are competent to do it safely. For example, if the hinge assembly failed, the bottom of the mast could shoot forward and cripple you. If a guy line breaks the mast could swing to the side and hit another boat or fall on your crew. If doing this on land beware of overhead power lines that kill people every year. The roller can be supported by 1" stainless tubing with eye and jaw end fittings used for biminis. Be aware that most of the weight of the mast will be on this so ensure the guy lines are secure and the attachment points to pushpit are strong. For the mast brackets I used 1/8" x 1.25" stainless steel angles, which are stronger than flat plates to resist bending. The pole brackets are 3/16" x 2" flat plates. The mast guy line brackets were made from leftover sail track. You'll need a drill press and welder for DIY. I used stainless steel for this because I had it in stock and my TIG welder does not do aluminum but if you are having a local metal fab shop makes these up for you then using aluminum will save weight. Time to leave the Bahamas for an intense 3 days sail without engine up the Gulf Stream back to the US. Trying to time a weather window was a challenge in itself but eventually one, although not the best, presented itself. Hurricane season was approaching and we really needed to get back to the United States to fix our engine which stopped working at the end of January and it was now the end of April 2020. The first step of leaving New Providence Island was all smooth sailing, good supper underway and beautiful sunset over Andros Island. This quickly turned into a very sporty sail as we approached the narrow section of the Northwest channel. Also a little friend paid us a surprise visit at night. One last weather update as we neared Bimini and we were off for a crazy fast sail in the Gulf Stream with a surprise. The martingale is the strap of carbon which spans the front beam on a catamaran and helps distribute the load from the forestay. For each new project on Paikea, Shayne draws a 3D model on Solid Edge which helps with getting an idea of how the finished product will look and how it we will tackle the job. Solar Panel Installation on Leopard 48 Catamaran | EP52 Our Leopard 48 Catamaran came with several flex solar panels, which sound good on a list of boat features, in practice, did little to no good when you wanted to stay on anchor for an extended period of time. So, like all good catamaran owners, we added more solar! Our goal was to generate enough power with a reasonable amount of sunshine to stay on anchor for weeks! The video shows how we built the structure, talks about the reason we chose aluminum over stainless steel, shares our cad drawings and material list, and gives you the final view of the finished installation. This project, combined with our lithium battery upgrade, means we can sail worry free (at least when it comes to power).
