Hello, and CONGRATS on finding this video! We hope that you find it as useful as we have intended it to be and that it answers nearly all your questions on how to perform BASIC MAINTENANCE on a MERCURY or other OUTBOARD motor, as well as the techniques you should use to WINTERIZE your outboard before STORAGE season (the saddest season of all). There are a lot of great Youtube videos out there on how to maintain, winterize, and store your mercury outboard motor, however, I could not find one that had absolutely EVERYTHING I needed with in-depth details. So… I decided to make one! Here it is! I made the type of video that I had spent hours looking for! If this video helps you out, please show your support by SUBSCRIBING to our channel, LIKING the video, or leaving a COMMENT! We greatly appreciate all of that! Make sure to check out these PARTS & SUPPLIES below, which are the ones I ordered (mostly from Amazon.com) with their part numbers & prices at the time of purchase. Lastly - CHECK OUT THE CHAPTERS that I’ve created. If all you need is to change out the Impeller - or just how to do the Spark Plugs - The chapters will let you skip straight there! In this video, Sailing Cayo Largo and the Yucatan Channel, Cuba for Cruisers, We anchor off the endless powder soft beaches of Cayo Largo, deserted from the covid-19 pandemic and go ashore to explore and pitch our sun tent. We snorkel in the reef just 100' from our boat and get chased away by huge barracuda fish. We sail around the Island of Jerventud, then west for the Yucatan Channel, and the Gulf Steam as we round the western tip if Cuba. #cruisingcuba #cayolargo #sailingchannel If you like our videos and want to see more/better videos, more often you can become a patreon supporter: https://www.patreon.com/sailingbalachandra If you haven't yet SUBSCRIBED and want to see more please click the SUBSCRIBE button above, and be sure to give this video a like! In August of 2017 we sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat, then sailed it over 300 nautical miles to Halifax Nova Scotia to spend a cold Canadian winter in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic. Sailing Balachandra is our YouTube sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos and La Vagabonde, which documents the sailing adventures of myself and my partner Nawal as we navigate the globe. We also dive into lots of DIY boat projects both above and below decks, and share with you all of the pros and cons of living aboard full time. 80 Degrees North? More like 80 Degrees Cooler! Despite its incredibly large size, Avocet’s fridge had some issues causing our produce to go bad quicker than it should and put an unnecessary strain on our batteries by keeping our compressor running nearly 24/7. After we began demolition and made a shocking discovery we made it our mission to build the best boat fridge, ever. Although our project plan was simple in theory, it turned out to be one of the most challenging from sourcing materials to construction itself, but luckily we were graced with the presence of Chris’s brother Jon from S/V Prism who helped us get the job done, just in time for a trip to Santa Cruz Island. Bilge stringers (which we also call bilge bands) add longitudinal stiffness to Arabella in an area of the boat where it's needed. Carolyn, who's been working on fitting the stringers into the boat, gives us a good look at how she sneaks up on a very smart fit in a hooked scarf. Alix shows us how graving pieces are made for the mizzen. Steve answers a few of your burning questions from the last couple week's comments about how the laminated bulkhead material is laid up. The most satisfying thing might be seeing those stainless temporary fasteners come out and the bilge stringers go in with their copper rivets. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are interesting in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Check out the progress on the wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority Jamestown Distributors Referral If you are going to shop at Jamestown Distributors, please consider using our Total Boat referral code, which kicks a little money toward Arabella with every purchase: http://totalboat.refr.cc/steveandalixa?t=tg Recurring support via Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Original Soundtrack available at benfundis.bandcamp.com FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com

Living at anchor in the middle of the ICW while the engine is in pieces can be really interesting and challenging. And this is the start of a long journey in our Yanmar 2GM engine rebuild which is well needed to keep on sailing. Everyday we battle the current with our not so great stern anchors, luckily our Mantus at the bow works great. And stay tuned for upcoming detailed bonus videos about the engine rebuild! If you like what you see don't forget to give us the thumbs up! Future SAILING Plans and Preparation. Where TO From HERE? After getting back from the remote Ailuk Lagoon this week we settle back into life in Majuro. With shops, postal services and internet it is a busy time. Covid 19 has limited our options on open destinations around the pacific. So we catch up on a lot of boat maintenance and also start researching our future sailing plans - Deciding we want to head to New Zealand via Fiji. We are Jo and Rob and we are here to share our sailing adventures with you. In 2016, inspired by the likes of ‘Delos’, ‘Sailing La Vagabonde’ and ‘Gone with The Wynns’, we sold up everything we owned and bought our 40ft, Fountaine Pajot ‘Lipari 41 Evo’ sailing catamaran ‘Double Trouble’. We had no sailing experience whatsoever, so the past few years have been a huge learning curve. We thought it might be fun to document our travels for anyone thinking of following a similar lifestyle. So far we have visited 7 different countries and sailed over 13,000 nautical miles. We have had many unique experiences that would not have been possible in our prior life and we don’t regret a second. We're both super keen on protecting our precious environment, so amongst other things, we both follow a plant based diet. You wont find any fishing footage on this channel! BioTrek is launched as we complete improvements for short-handed sailing – our new electric traveler and adding buttons to control all cockpit winches from the helm station. Pierre and his friend Ransom Morse use creative inspiration to find the best place to install a line -driver for the electric drive for our traveler, with discussions that started last summer, proceeded into the fall, and then were done early this spring. With button control for the traveler at the helm, we can now gybe from the helm station. Episode #184 - How We Dropped Our Mast on SV Triteia Hello Friends, On this episode we show you how we de-stepped our mast on Triteia with just Camille, Myself and $30 worth of lumber. We have extensive professional experience at rigging large heavy objects and flying them through the air so this was a walk in the park. THIS CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS AND DEADLY FOR ANYONE WITHOUT EXPERIENCE SO CONSULT A PROFESSIONAL IF YOU DO KNOW KNOW HOW TO SAFELY EXCUTE THIS PROCESS. After the action footage I explain how WE did it and what you need to consider when stepping or dropping a mast using this technique. This weeks video is from 2020 and shows the forward hatch repair. This will be the last video set in 2020 and from now on it will be the week just gone. Be sure to watch to the end where I discover my mistake. This project once rolling only took me a day to do and can be quite simple. Although the hatch is good, the acrylic has crazy patterns so I will be looking into replacing the acrylic or the whole hatch. I will also be building the raised platform for the hatch at some point as the fixings are going straight through core material. Ahoy! We are Miguel and Saskia. In July 2020 we left Amsterdam aboard Saetta, a 1983 Moody 41, to see more from the world. On this channel, you can follow our trip: where we go, how we get there, what we explore, our joys and our struggles. In this video, we continue with fixing the engine. We do a compression test to verify the condition of the engine... It seems we might just about gotten away with it!! Now that we took care of the engine we can continue with the trip. In this episode we start our trek south down the ICW at mile 0 in Norfolk VA. We are racing to get out of the way of a nor'easter and leave well before sunrise trying to make it to CoinJock NC where there is good protection at the marina. While motoring the last few miles to Coinjock into twenty eight knots of breeze we observe another rpm drop on the diesel engine. We are beginning to think we may have a caught a diesel bug while the boat sat unused in Annapolis for a month. We dig out our DIY fuel polishing system consisting of a strainer, electric pump, and baja filter. We used this setup previously with good results. With the fuel polished we make our way down to Alligator River. We decide to linger in this anchorage waiting out a cold snap. Calico Skies is very comfortable in cold weather with our installed force air diesel heater. Once the weather warms up we decide to explore this area a bit more. In typical years we fly through the ICW and don't really get off the boat. We find a spot to land the dinghy and explore the marsh lands by foot. We are. inspired to have our first bonfire since back in the Ragged Islands back in June. 0:00 Intro 0:35 ICW Begins 1:30 Recap 2:28 Dirty Fuel?! 3:10 Filter change & DIY Fuel Polishing 6:03 Off to the Alligator River 8:07 Dinghy mission exploring North Carolina swamplands 14:00 First Bonfire in a while! 14:55 On the move again to Alligator-Pungo Canal 19:48 Another beautiful sunset 20:06 Coming up next week! -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Thanks to our Patrons! Live Q&A Session we held on Friday, April 16 from Arabella’s boat shed in Granby, MA. We also talked about the important changes coming to Patreon as of May 1. EP170: Master of Disaster- Exploring Grenada We went to go and embrace the Sulphur Springs.. They were so bubbly and warm.. I kinda felt like I was lying in a Soda Stream 😂 Some of the residents of Grenada were there as well and invited us to have some lunch with them. It was really awesome. The following day it was Ricky's Birthday, so we first had to do some boat maintenance and then headed off to for some beers and more adventuring. We went up to Gouyave to see if we could partake in a event called Fish Fridays (it's a huge fish market) but it hasn't happened since Covid so we had to opt for some chicken instead.. We are looking ahead to getting back to planking Arabella this summer. In order to do that, we are going to want all hands on deck, so we got a little help coming in. The first of the crew has arrived and she will be helping us for the next month or more. Carolyn has a good amount of experience in and around boats. From tall ship sailing, to working with a shipwright in Maine, to boatbuilding school in the Pacific Northwest, she has a lot to offer and we are very excited to have her here. She and Steve are going to start by working on getting started with installing the bilge stringers as Alix continues work on the mizzen mast. A huge thank you to everyone that has helped support the project! We really appreciate it and in this episode we are showing some of the items from our wishlist that have arrived, including plans for a potential tender for Arabella. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. So this week we get the boat lifted out and discover a bit of a Dominic DIY failure (or two, well maybe three). We only have one week to get the boat turned around and back in the water with a list off jobs needing doing, so we call in the help of Mikhail and his team. If anyone wants any kind of help with their boat chores in and around the Solent then Mikhail is actually really reasonably priced and is insanely knowledgeable on all things boat maintenance. You can get hold of him here: 07722 694946 or check his website out at https://eco-blasting.co.uk/antifoul-removal/ Also huge thanks again to Ship Shape for the awesome new bespoke sized mattress, it's amazing what a difference it has made!! Anyone who's thinking they maybe could do with a new mattress on board let them know you found them through watching this video and use it to haggle yourselves a good price. https://shipshapebedding.co.uk Other useful links in the video: 1) Support us through our Patreon Page if you'd like us to spend more time working on videos, improving the quality and then getting more content out. 2) Carlys awesome Instagram page can be found here: https://www.instagram.com/sailingcadoha/?hl=en 3) Speaking of Instagram ,check out Hanks efforts here: https://www.instagram.com/vizsla.hank/?hl=en 4). One of the ways which we're paying for this lifestyle (as well as working during the winter) is up-cycling old running rigging into dog leads and collars which you can check out here: https://www.cadoha.com/etsy-shop 5) Chris over at 'Sailing Britaly' who has some really helpful mechanical videos, and more: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC64BFQulaAIl1xWG4DJlQ8A Thanks for the great content, Chris! We hope you're all starting to emerge from this strange time we've just been through, and fingers crossed the summer is kinder to us all than the winter was. All the best. Carly, Dom & Hank

Yes, my friend's. Even if you have money, they say boat refit is a time assuming job and not everyone can do it. l can definitely agree with that especially if you are alone and working two jobs also you have a boat to refit and family. However, l did quite a bit so don't miss my episode and don't forget to throw some comment. See you...

During his time away from work, Jamie lived on board and cruised South East Asia. One of his life dreams is to sail around the world. His plans came together at the end of 2018 when he met a Filipina lounge singer in China. Princess was yearning for a vacation since she had been working many years to support her family. Finally, her siblings got their own jobs and she decided to join Jamie on Jupiter² and go sailing. It was a wild decision for her because she had never sailed before. For the first time, they sail for two weeks around Phuket, Thailand. She began to see what Jamie love about the sea. They both resigned from their jobs in early 2019 and began cruising full time. What a stressful time on the ICW we had. After just sailing over 346Nm non-stop from the Bahamas without engine this was the dreaded moment. The wind did not cooperate with us as we tried to make our way into New Smyrna Beach and through a lift bridge. Cory had to quickly jump into the dinghy and start towing our Hunter 33 with our small 3hp outboard. Then try to drop the hook against strong current and wind in a narrow channel and I was scared meanwhile manning the helm. But Cory's confidence made it work and we finally reunited with Therese and Cody from SV Vinyasa. Filmed early May 2020. If you like what you see don't forget to give us the thumbs up! #sailing #cruisingicw #hunter33sailboat ***************************************** Help the videos stay alive by becoming a patron, donating or becoming a YouTube Member. #Amelyacht #powertools #sailing #sailinglife #boat #yachting #boatlife #boating #sailingboat #boats #sailingyacht #boatrepair #boatmaintenance They say that sailing is the most expensive way to travel for free and that cruising life is just maintaining boats in exotic locations. And it's true, maintenance is an inseparable part of cruising life. Learning to maintain your boat is as important as learning to sail it but don't let that put you off. Our boat was a fixer-upper when we set off to travel world by sea in 2017. We had no idea really how much work that was still left to do on the boat and even less about how to fix it. Although I'm pretty handy with the power tools with a background in furniture making, I had no mechanical or engineering qualifications whatsoever and again even though we had a sailing school I had no idea how to maintain the bigger cruising boats. And to be honest I'd much prefer to be having a cold beer in a beach bar rather than taking engines apart. So over the last four years, 12 000 sea miles and four continents I've had to learn how to maintain and repair the boat while living on board with the family and I have to do it because it keeps our dream alive on a very tight budget. I've learned by reading countless blogs, watching hours of youtube footage and listening to old salty sea dogs and experts. And okay admittedly i do have to call in a professional now and again to do jobs which are way beyond my pay grade. But if i do that, i always make sure that i ask loads of questions and film it so i know how to do that job for myself in the future. So this channel is really for all you want to be sailors or newbies who want to see firsthand what can go right and wrong with DIY boat maintenance. Rigging, outboards, solar, engines, water makers, pumps, furlers, sails, electronics and much more, everything I've had to do on the fly to keep this boat sailing, using the tools resources and know-how that i had at the time whether at anchor or in the boat yard and often with a lot of improvisation. And i don't get everything right either. But i'm hoping these videos will show the reality behind the scenes and to give some balance to the lifestyle videos you often find on youtube. If you do want to follow our family travel and sailing adventures then check out our main channel Mothership Adrift with weekly updates of our sailing blogs and videos. But this channel is purely DIY sailboat maintenance. So if you are a professional expert or even an old salty sea dog with some good advice then please leave any constructive criticism, insight and advice in the comments below the videos. In this video, we carry out a 1000 hours service engine on our good’ol Yanmar iron genny. In a 100 hours service, the oil and oil filter need to be replaced, as well as the primary and secondary fuel filters. In a 1000 hours service, we also change the coolant fluid and the impeller. #299 Get your SLV T-shirt here: http://bit.ly/SLVMerch There are heaps of pros in sailing to the party. You can arrive when you want (allowing 6hr travel time), and you can bring your house with you. You can roll up with enough alcohol belowdecks to make old rum smugglers blush. We're sailing from Antigua to Barbuda with some good winds so we should make good time. The last time we were on Barbuda, it was directly after a hurricane devastated the place, and we're looking forward to see the rebuild. We're really keen to meet our friends for a birthday party after a punishing 3 days of maintenance. It kinda sucks you have to tear up your bed to get to the motors, and any time you get to one thing the stuff piles up, but that's just another little part of life on a boat. This week living aboard a boat has brought us right into the heart of the Gold Coast. Our outboard has broken down, leaving us floating away in the current, luckily we get saved by a fellow yachty but are stuck on the boat in the rain until it's fixed. We extend our DIY abilities and attempt to fix the outboard, with not much luck each time... We bounce around different anchorages on the Gold Coast and South Stradbroke Island, Tipplers Resort. Thinking of getting some camera gear? This is what we use and would highly recommend these products. If you purchase through these links we will get a small commission which really helps us to keep creating more content like this.
