After a series of presentations, games and activities, we asked them what they’d learnt - and, as our latest video release reveals, the answers aren’t always what you might expect!

Chief Johnson and his small community have been welcoming cruisers for many years. Nebul bay is the closest safe anchorage to Olal, where Cultural Festivals are held each year in July and August. Chief Johnson invited all BPO yachts to visit his community. We had a memorable B’day dinner organized in his house for one of the BPO cruisers… Since many of the BPO sailors are volunteer trained specialists in vision screening and members of the H.I.T. supporter team, we offered free eye testing to young and old. They lead all investigations to the best of their knowledge and belief. Participants are thus able to carry out visual acuity and autorefractor provisions under screenings conditions to children and adults. The project of H.I.T. Foundation: “SAVE CHILDREN’S SIGHT FOR A BETTER CHANCE IN LIFE” is able to detect visual defects of children, adolescents and young adults at an early stage. Approximately 20% of all children and young people have learning difficulties by undetected visual defects. Only if visual defects are detected and rectified early, children have good opportunities for learning, performance and a self-determined successful future. Some disclaimers: ˚ The H.I.T. vision screening is available, if there are no other or better options for vision correction onsite. ˚ The H.I.T. vision screening is as accurate as possible under the local circumstances. However, it does not measure up to the precise measurements taken and handled by an optician, optometrist or ophthalmologist in a professional environment! ˚ Therefore, neither the local examiner nor the H.I.T. Institute can be made liable for the results of the H.I.T. measurements and the effectiveness of the transferred eye-glasses. ˚ The final decision for participation in the H.I.T vision screening is made by the guardians/parents of the children and they are, therefore, fully responsible and not H.I.T. ˚ When there is no realistic possibility for an examination with an optometrist or at an eye clinic, there is a good chance that the H.I.T. vision screening program will detect visual defects and thus eye treatments can be applied in time. After the testing session, the BPO cruisers got the opportunity to see how kava was prepared and taste it! Most were a little apprehensive after the kava experience they had a few weeks earlier in Fiji (some had upset stomach) but after liking the taste, most went for a second roundJ Next morning, nobody felt ill and all reported a nice night sleep! Is that because Ambrym kava is some of the best?? I let you the judge! A special thank you to Chief Johnson for the nice welcome in the community. Filmed in August 2015.

Come join us for a sail around Minorca, Spain - one the amazingly beautiful Spanish Islands in the Balearic Islands. We stopped off at five different spots - check them out! The waters are very clean, the beaches are well-groomed, the food is excellent, the people are delightful and there are anchorages to suit everyone. Whether you want a quiet scenic bay with turquoise water or a bustling harbor filled with shops, cafes, and historical old towns you’ll get your fix. There are even party towns if you’re up for a rave or a foam party. The Balearic Islands are nothing like Italy, Greece, or Turkey so I can’t compare and contrast – they are in a league of their own. Many bays having mooring buoys and others allow for free anchoring. And there are loads of marinas if you prefer that scene. It has it all. As long as you plan ahead and understand the weather conditions you can surely enjoy the islands for free at anchor. That being my quick introduction to the Balearics, I want to take you for a trip around the island of Minorca. It’s the island located furthest to the east and the first of the Balearics that we toured before completing our circumnavigation of the Mediterranean. We purchased the boat in Palma, Majorca (the next island over) so Minorca marks our last stop before our circle completes. I’m hoping this article and the accompanying video will create an interest for you to consider a sailing holiday, extended cruising season, or even a sightseeing trip to Minorca. Sailing from Corsica to Minorca – how did we get to Minorca in the first place? So…since April 2014 (18 months ago as I write) we’ve sailed a total of 6,445 nautical miles. Leaving from Palma, Majorca we sailed to Gibraltar, Algeria, Malta, Sicily, Italy, Greece, Turkey, and then back hitting Greece, Italy, Sardinia, and Corsica. Eventually, the time came to leave Corsica and make our last stop before completing our Mediterranean circumnavigation. We left the majestic French town of Bonifacio on the island of Corsica at 5am in the morning. (Watch my video on Bonifacio, here: Sailing into Bonifacio on the French island of Corsica) The morning sky was still pitch black and only a rubbish truck could be heard murmurings through the town. I heard a quiet catfight and otherwise, the only noisemakers were my husband and I felt our way around the deck of the boat. The only thing to light our path was the yellow-orange town lamps. Looking around at the narrow carved rock exit I was grateful we had some light. Where’s the moon I wondered? As we slipped our lines and slowly eased out into the cliff-sided canal towards the open Mediterranean, my husband, Simon, headed forward and we whispered our customary goodbye: “Goodbye Bonifacio. Goodbye Corsica. Thank you so much for having us. We had a great time and appreciate your hospitality!” When creating a passage plan, Simon aims for us to arrive at our final destination during daylight. Entering a new harbor during the day is so much easier due to obvious reasons (you can see)! On this particular trip, the plan was to leave Bonifacio, Corsica, and arrive on the island of Minorca around 7pm the following day but we, instead, arrived at 3pm. The first stretch of our trip was brilliant as we were hitting speeds of 8.5 knots. Finish reading at: http://www.sailingbritican.com/sailing-around-minorca/ #sailing #sailingblog #sailingvideo

The thing about lightning is it’s difficult to avoid in the tropics, particularly when the monsoon hits town. ... (Con't below...) ****************************** Be one of the good guys: https://www.patreon.com/followtheboat Be the first to know: http://eepurl.com/B9Ykn Subscribe to our youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=spannerheadz Blog: http://www.followtheboat.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/followtheboat Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/followtheboat ****************************** Ao Chalong is a popular and safe anchorage in all seasons, although it can rack up quite a fetch when a strong wind hits a certain angle. Getting to shore–which tends to be a long way from where you are anchored–is pretty impossible during stormy weather unless you have a rib the size of the average yacht. Or you don’t mind getting drenched. When the first murmurings of this year’s SW monsoon came rumbling in, we cancelled our plans to meet friends in town and stayed aboard. Squadrons of clouds hurled lightning across the sky at each other for two days, while we sheltered in the cockpit and collected rainwater in buckets. There’s nowhere to go in this sort of weather. You just have to trust to luck that your mast will be less attractive than someone else’s when that stray lightning bolt searches for a place to crash land. We were OK this time, but in India we hadn’t been so lucky. The damage had been minor, we just lost our radar. This wasn’t the monsoon proper, just a little sortie before the main event arrived next month. Eventually the sun came out and the sky turned from black to blue, so we headed to shore to collect ingredients for cocktails. Well, what else are you gonna do? Mint was in abundance in the markets, so mojitos were on the cards…now if only we could get enough ice from the town back to Esper without it melting. Before getting excited about mint, it might have been a good idea to check our white rum situation, which was basically two fingers. Hey ho, we improvised with various other ingredients and came up with something which approximated a mojito. During all the kerfuffle of working out how to make these fine cocktails, Millie reminded us how clever she is by making use of the rear heads. Not fancying the idea of cat litter rolling around the cabin sole, we had trained her to use the toilet at a very early age. We caught her on camera this time, and present the footage as evidence that–contrary to popular belief–it is possible to train a cat. After a few more days in the bay, we left for Phi Phi Don. Yes, before you raise an eyebrow, it is true that we hadn’t thought much of the place during our first brief visit. But we were assured by our new friend from Patreon, American McGee, that he knew of a particularly nice spot where we could hook up… On our way there, we took a break overnight at a peaceful anchorage along the coast of Ko Yai, a gentle spot just east of Ao Chalong. Jamie tried out his new ‘skin’, frightened off a few jellyfish and set about scraping the prop, while Liz and Millie indulged in a spot of unproductive fishing. It was our first quiet night in over two weeks. ****************************** The fantastic music on this video comes under the Creative Commons license.
