La Minute Web Tour Voile | Dunkerque - Régates d'exhibition
The Web Minute | Dunkirk - Exhibition Races
Our second night at sea was spent beating north in a building wind. About 3am we overtook Turnpoint and then, as we approached Campbell River, still hard on the wind, we passed two anchored R2Ak boats who were waiting for the tide change. We decided to reef before passing through the notorious Seymour Narrows, fortunately we got through at first light. Although the wind and waves were not as extreme as last year the gusts blowing down off the western cliffs were often vicious and the whirlpools caused by the 8 knot tide with us caused us to be thrown around and we had to sail very cautiously. We then faced a 90mile beat up Johnstone Strait. We were buzzed by a helicopter, not as bad as the one who interferred at the Port Townsend start, but even so it was obvious the pilot had no idea how dangerous the downdraft could be on a fast moving multihull. The wind was still increasing but the water stayed flat so we could sail at high speed. First 9 knots to windward, then 10, then 11 and finally 12.5 knots hard on the wind. Fast enough to overtake a motoring Andrews 68 monohull. It was cold in the bright sunshine, a foretaste of the Alaskan weather to come. Finally, late in the evening we cleared the end of Johnstone Strait and started heading north into a very sloppy sea covered with logs and weed. I was steering as the sun started to set. We didn't hit anything but suddenly there was a bang and a lurch and the tiller was nearly ripped out of my hand. Looking back I saw the starboard rudder underwater held to the boat by one 6mm (1/4in) tiller bar bolt. It would be a real disaster if we lost any of it so we had a desperate race to get it all safely on board. Once we had it safe we discovered the rudder pintles had sheer off. Bob contacted race control to explain why our tracker now showed us sailing south. Fortunately Port Hardy was on a close reach, maybe 7 miles away, and somewhere we knew would be an easy entrance under sail in the dark. We were even less manouverable than usual, and I found it very tricky sailing with just one rudder. I could manage when the speed was over 6 knots but below that we had to mainly steer with the sails or the boat would weathercock. That was a challenge in the dark. The wind slowly dropped and by 11am we were pedalling into a confusion of lights, not quite sure where the government dock really was. A few minutes after midnight we tied up to the dock, tired, cold and very depressed. "Team meeting at 5am" said Bob. I know I didn't sleep, instead tossing and turning, what to do, why did it break... So we officially retired and began to make the repairs. See our return trip in the next video and see r2ak.com for more on the race.
After four nights at sea, I arrived in Isla Mujeres (Mexiko), the Island of Women. My friend Maria's parents live there on their boat Rejoice and Maria flew in from Panama to visit us. It was great to be able to take out my Brompton bike again and cruise around the island! Enjoy & Ahoy, Nike & Karl Visit www.whitespotpirates.com for more info about KARL, the journey or people I met during my trip. --- This is NOT a live documentary! There is a time difference between filming and publishing due to the time it takes to edit and to internet not always being awailable on those little remote palm tree islands :). Team GTR races their Mumm 36 across the Irish Sea 2/7/2016 The trip from East Down Yacht Club to Peel Harbour took a little over 3 hours and 40 minutes with a top speed of 16 Knots. With the official race cancelled a few boats decide the would still head over for the weekend. The running conditions made for some fast down wind sailing as GTR surfed down the waves.
Adesso comincio davvero a scendere fino a "casa".

On February 12th, we set sail out of Isla Parida, Panama, bound for the Islas Secas, a mere 20 nautical miles away. The Gods of the Winds had other plans, however. After an hour of beating hard into 30 knots of breeze and fighting to stay on course, we yielded to nature’s demands and spun downwind to begin a 700-nautical mile downwind sail to the fabled Galápagos archipelago. This video captures the delights our first true bluewater crossing, including our EQUATOR CROSSING and Shellback ceremony, a passage we were lucky to share with our good friend and crewmate, Lori. Largest single firework ever, it was fun making this video. The fireworks with family was a lot of fun, but the results of this firework in the video were not real. this was just a sparkler.

There are lots of different ways in which you can clean the fouling from your yacht, this is how we do it at Medway Yacht Club. Music from http://www.purple-planet.com/
We spent our first night at sea drifting off Galiano Island. We should have pedalled, as Turnpoint Designs overtook us. Next morning a 15kt NW wind filled in as predicted and we began beating up the Strait of Georgia. Unfortunately, after a tack, we noticed our mast rotator was hanging loose. The 12mm (1/in) stainless steel bolt had sheered. None of us had expected that! Phil lashed it up with some dyneema line but we had to get a replacement bolt. Without the rotator the mast flops around, not only disturbing the windflow over the mainsail but also it flexes alarmingly. Fortunately Bob had a friend in Nanaimo with a waterfront dock. He was called at 6.30am and told to buy an 8in x 1/2in bolt. We sailed and pedalled into Nanaimo, Dave threw us the bolt and, without stopping, we were on our way again. But of course we had lost at least 2 hours of a good sailing wind and several boats overtook. We were amused by one boat who clearly thought "Bad Kitty has done 6 VanIsle races so knows the way, I'll follow them", realising almost too late that we were not tacking out of the harbour but entering it. And then the wind started to drop, and finally off Hornby Island it disappeared completely. On the hottest day for several weeks we pedalled for 6 hours straight, Phil did the lion's share but even I did over an hour. Still we made good about 12 miles and eventually a light wind started to build. Only then did we remember we had brought parasols that fitted over the pedal stations.... Fast multihulls are amazing, as soon as there is any wind they generate apparent wind and start to move, 4.5 knots with not a ripple on the water. Our second sunset at sea. We didn't know it was to be our last. More in the next video and see r2ak.com for more on the race.

Sailing to the equator we are hit by a big storm and practice heaving to to try and make Delos comfortable in the big winds. After being at sea for close to 2 weeks, Delos sails her way towards the Equator! The crew go all out preparing nasty surprises for the equator crossing ceremony. And just as we get within a few miles of the equator, Neptune shows us who’s boss by stirring up a gnarly squal. Not wanting to cross the equator in bad weather we take this opportunity to practice our heaving-to skills. Three months at the yard documented in detail at https://havewindwilltravel.com/. They say: "If you're going to haul out, be sure to do this and that and this while you're out of the water." Well, trust me. We did. I have spared you for quite some time but I now think you're ready. I give you .... just a small glimpse at the mountains of OTHER boat projects we did while at the yard as a final farewell to our shipyard days: replacing thru-hulls and underwater hoses, re-bedding fixtures and stanchion posts, stopping leaks, you name it! Next up, we start the rigorous process of stepping the mast and raising our new 5/6 stainless steel wire rig. Enjoy!

Prequel 8: We travel to Bali and get off the beaten track to explore some of the island’s secret places far away from the tourist dives of Kuta and Nusa Dua. Leaving the idyllic Nusa Lembongan, we return to the Bali mainland to climb the island's tallest point, the volcano Gunung Agung. We then pick up some motorbikes in Ubud and head into the hinterland around Munduk to jump into waterfalls. We wrap up in Seminyak hitting the islands best bars, Potato Head and Ku De Ta and surfing Echo Beach.
