Marit Bouwmeester (NED) has won the Laser Radial gold medal that eluded her four years ago. Silver went to Annalise Murphy (IRL), a sweet reward after finishing an agonising fourth place at London 2012. Anne-Marie Rindom (DEN) took bronze. It was a tense Medal Race in light and fluky airs on the Pão de Açucar course in the shadow of Sugarloaf Mountain. Bouwmeester looked to be in a good position during the early stages, but a big split developed in the fleet after the top of the final lap, and the Dutch and Danish contenders were dropped to the back. They could only watch as Murphy and the other front runners sailed away and across the finish line more than a hundred metres ahead. It was so close between the front five boats on the final run, there was a chance the Irish sailor could steal gold from the Netherlands. But Murphy crossed the line in fifth, yielding the Olympic title to Bouwmeester. With Rindom back in eighth, Murphy had done enough to take silver. All three sailors celebrated and every one of them looked delighted to have emerged with a medal from perhaps the toughest sailing venue ever seen at an Olympic Games. Bouwmeester now has the gold to go with the silver she took in London 2012.

Impi is a catamaran sailing around the world. We share some techniques in navigation we use to sail in reef infested waters confidently - we are preparing to sail from New Caledonia for The Loyalty Islands and will anchor off the SE side of New Caledonia in a reef fringed bay called Port de Goro. Navigational aids include SAS PLANET, Open Cpn and the chart plotter. Port de Goro has some interesting sights including the remnants of a Japanese iron ore loading Wharf which stopped when France joined America ad England in an embargo to halt the flow of natural raw materials to Japan just before the bombing of Pearl Harbour.

Wir haben eine Tauchsafari, namens Deep-South Tour, gemacht wir fuhren mit dem Safarischiff Longimanus von Port Ghalib Richtung Süden. Der Südlichste Tauchplatz war 15 km vom Sudan entfernt, dort erwarteten uns unberührte Tauchplätze mit einzigartigen Korallengärten und enormer Fischviehlfalt. Die Tour hat alles Geboten was sich ein Taucherherz wünscht, von den wunderschönsten Korallengärten bis zu Atemberaubenden Steilwänden mit vielen Fischen. Eddy’s H20 Extreme Classic turned out to be a great day. The track was perfect and challenged the Sportsman riders through to the Jonny Walkers. Not an easy race but a hard extreme enduro as promised by Fast Eddy and his team, with a mini Erzberg style rock garden and a huge log section presenting a challenge for all the riders with lots of steep hills and gnarly descents thrown in. In the Pro class Jonny Walker led from the start closely followed by Paul Bolton and Tom Sagar in 3rd, eventually Billy Bolt came round in 4th after a high speed dismount due to a troublesome throttle tube, causing him to lose about 7 minutes. Jonny Walker took the win with 11 laps, 3 mins 45 secs later a charging Paul Bolton took 2nd place and Billy Bolt managed an impressive 3rd with 10 laps after pushing hard beating Tom Sagar by just over a minute. It hadn't happened yet, in the whole 2 years we have been sailing around the world BUT we had finally ran La Vagabonde completely out of food (apart from a few odd things we found scattered around in some dark and very scary places). Unfortunately, we had missed the ship in Nuku Hiva to stock up before leaving to the Tuamotus, and of course the only supermarket on the island of Raroia hadn’t had a ship of supplies come for the past 3 weeks…. so the no food situation quickly became a problem. We managed to catch a few fish, but after 2 weeks of exploring this magical island, we had to set sail to the main island of the bunch - Fakarava, where we could hopefully get some fresh fruit and veg.
