We took a break from sanding on the teak decks and enjoyed a weekend in New Orleans. We rented a condo in the French Quarter and did all of the typical French Quarter things (well the typical things you do with kids in tow :) ) We enjoyed the balcony of our place, had great food, rode the street cars, cruised through the Garden District, went to the Butterfly and insect museum, Had more great food, walked a lot, visited the french market, and had more great food. Enjoy our little respite from the "Grind" of boat repair. Literally the grind of boat repair as you will see the newer progress made on the teak decks with an aggressive way to smooth the decks and get them flat. Join us on our journey as we continue to rebuild, refit and prepare our Formosa 51 Sailboat for our continued cruising journey. We have always loved the Formosa, bought one (on a bit of a whim) late in 2014, moved aboard this one right away and started to do our refit while living board. We find ourselves in Florida once again for the survey, haul out, and sea trial of the Seawind 1160 catamaran that we're in the process of buying (fingers crossed!) There were some issues (of course), including a problem with the engine that took two hours and a visit to West Marine to fix before we could leave the harbor. In a fading nor’easter the 28 strong fleet in the CYCA’s Newcastle Bass Island Race were led out of Sydney Harbour on Friday evening by Jim Delegat’s Giacomo and Rupert Henry’s Chinese Whisper just after sunset. The fleet experienced a slow but steady beat up the coast, with the leaders turning south from Newcastle early on Saturday morning, with the fleet gaining pace down the coast ahead of a building nor’easter. Giacomo and Chinese Whisper passed Sydney Harbour at about 11.30am with a significant lead on the rest of the fleet. Giacomo was the first boat to enter Sydney Harbour just after 8pm on Saturday evening. The Bow Caddy team filmed the race start from North Head with the dramatic sunset backdrop of the City.

Still stuck in the boatyard, this week we continue our own boat projects. We finish up adding some shelves into our cockpit lockers, having more fun with fiberglass and epoxy. We also chat with a very knowledgeable cruiser in the boatyard who gives us some foam to make some more insulation for our big, power-hungry fridge and freezer. While we sit and wait, we observe life around the boatyard, where we learn they don’t just do boatwork… they also offload all the squid from the fishing boats as well! It’s quite the interesting process, with lots of activity around the boatyard. We also see another boat who’s had a bit of misfortune out at the Channel Islands, unfortunately much worse than us… A huge hole in the side of the boat, missing keel and broken rudder are a stark reminder of the importance of keeping your wits and making good decisions while on the water. But alas, the end is in sight, the boatyard is almost done with Varuna’s new bowsprit and it’s only a matter of days until we are back on the water! We hope you enjoy our videos and adventures.
