Realtime updates at https://www.instagram.com/sailing_with_dogs/ - make sure to check out our Instagram stories up top! Our journey by catamaran up the east coast of the US has been split between open ocean and the ICW. This video is a pretty good snapshot of what our days are like, depending on which route we choose. The ICW is interesting because the landscape is constantly changing, and you really get a sense of the places you're sailing (driving) past; the open ocean, however, means real sailing - when the wind's up and the waves are bouncing, there's nothing quite like that feeling of freedom and the sense of being alive and at one with nature. On the first day we head from Fort Lauderdale to West Palm Beach along the ICW, passing through many bridges. On day two, we head outside from Palm Beach Inlet to Fort Pierce Inlet, then head to a beautiful anchorage on the Indian River. We head into Fort Lauderdale, possibly the world's boating capital, and finally replace our autopilot. But of course it's a boat, so nothing goes quite as planned. We also share a little bit of other boat maintenance, visit West Marine, and finally get our holding tank pumped ? (or do we?) Realtime updates at https://www.instagram.com/sailing_with_dogs/ - make sure to check out our Instagram stories up top! After several days of sailing up the Keys from Key West, we finally make it to Miami! The wind turned nasty as we made our way over to Dinner Key Marina where we had a mooring ball reserved. This was our first attempt at picking up a mooring ball from the catamaran, and it was hilariously bad. Included in this video for your amusement ? We have since figured out what we are doing. ;) We were hoping to have time to hang out in Miami but we needed to give the dogs a huge walk and run around, and we had five loads of laundry to get through after thoroughly soaking all of our bedding - pillows included - during our journey from Key West (see the previous episode for more on that). We also had to deal with the realities of big city cruising, where we are small fry. It was super cool getting to drive by downtown Miami on our way out though! Realtime updates at https://www.instagram.com/sailing_with_dogs/ - make sure to check out our Instagram stories up top! We continue our journey up the Florida Keys, our most beautiful sail so far this trip. We absolutely loved the narrow creeks that go through the mangroves, and saw a ton of birdlife, including cormorants, pelicans, egrets, and more. A couple of dolphins too! We also had a very unfortunate experience: we failed to properly lock down our main cabin hatch and it was flooded with seawater - of course this happened about as far away from laundry facilities as we've been ? ah, boat life! Realtime updates at https://www.instagram.com/sailing_with_dogs/ - make sure to check out our Instagram stories up top! We made it to Key West after a crazy overnight sail (see Episode 3 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-Q87l3FfIg) where we broke half the boat - or so it seemed. We spent our time in Key West giving the dogs some much-welcomed land time and fixing what we could on the boat. We also gave her a much-needed clean. It's not always a glamorous life, being a cruiser, but it is great being able to do the dirty work with a gorgeous backdrop like Key West! Thanks to our friends on SV Unspoken for the wonderful dog park and restaurant recommendations! We didn't film it, but we LOVED eating at Bien, an awesome Cuban restaurant in a quieter spot in Key West. Realtime updates at https://www.instagram.com/sailing_with_dogs/ - make sure to check out our Instagram stories up top! Our "shakedown sail" was quite the epic adventure. We made a LOT of big mistakes that were almost disastrous, and in the pitch black of night, 60 nautical miles offshore, we had an hour of carnage onboard. We then battled big seas and hefty winds through a long night of hand steering with no workable sail. If nothing else, it made me a better sailor at least! We weren't able to video the actual events (it was pitch black, and everything happened in rapid succession, videoing it would have been impossible, and trying would have been dangerous) but we talk through the events, and share a bunch of footage pre-night time and of our arrival into beautiful Key West the next day. This episode is likely safe viewing for all ages (just one reference to "shitty"). :) Please give us a thumbs up if you enjoy it! Continuing the journey on our Seawind 1160 catamaran, up the Gulf Coast of Florida. We have a short drive today, up the ICW from Sarasota Bay to Cortez, where we will have the boat hauled for some work over the winter. Before reaching our destination, we pull over at an anchorage by Bradenton Beach to put out buoys and board fenders to protect the cat as we navigate into the narrow haul-out well. Unfortunately we didn't realize quite how tight a squeeze it would be into the well, and they all had to be taken off again before we could enter. Thank goodness for the kind live-aboard folk at the marina, keeping a look out for our arrival, and helping us in. The entrance to the marina was pretty poorly marked; what looked like a wide channel was in fact an incredibly narrow channel hard up against the green markers ? so we ended up running aground a few times (I think we counted five times). I was bummed that my GoPro quit recording before we made it all the way in, but c'est la vie. Rian at Mondo Marine came by with his colleague to take a look at the boat. He is doing some work that is being paid for by the previous owner, and we had him take a look at a couple of new issues too. We also discuss catamarans vs monohulls once again - this time at anchor vs while driving/sailing. Turns out that cats are MUCH more comfortable in short chop when you're not going anywhere ? The pups will be joining our voyages in April. And we'll make sure to give you a peek at them very soon - we'll be doing an abbreviated "life story" / Q&A next episode (finally!) -Kate Links to Amazon help me out - any purchase you make will give me a little commission, and doesn't cost you anything extra. :) Video gear used in this video: Sony A7ii camera with 35mm and 55mm lenses Sony ECM-GZ1M Zoom Microphone GoPro Hero5 Black GoPro Pro 3.5mm Mic Adapter Rode SmartLav Black Pro Basic Common Outdoor Sports Kit for GoPro Hero 5 My favorite current video camera - compact, amazing auto-focus, in body stabilization, and great in low light: http://amzn.to/2kX973h Boat info: 2004 Seawind 1160 Catamaran (Deluxe style) Music by Epidemic Sound (http://www.epidemicsound.com) Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sailing_with_dogs/ Check out our website: http://www.sailingwithdogs.com Find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SailingWithDogs/
This episode is likely safe viewing for all ages (language: "crappy", "freakin'"). :) Please give us a thumbs up if you enjoy this episode! Continuing our journey on our Seawind 1160, up the Gulf Coast of Florida. We set off in the pitch black dead of night from Coya Costa State Park. We had a long journey up the coast and through Sarasota Bay, and with no wind, and wind from directly ahead, we were forced to motor all day. We quickly learned why you shouldn't set off in the dark without radar (thankfully no boats were hurt) and why having a working autopilot is so important. It's tiring hand-steering for 12 hours straight! Things got more visually interesting when we hit the ICW going up towards Sarasota. There were a ton of boats out enjoying the weekend afternoon, and the waterfront house-spotting was pretty fun. It's a really nice area. That being said, experiencing the sunrise over the water was probably the highlight of this trip for me. Aside from seeing dolphins, of course. We checked out the bay around Marina Jack where we plan to moor the boat during the remaining winter months, once work on her is complete. We also had our first encounter with a bridge ? that was a bit nerve-wracking! Finally, we talk a little about the differences between monohulls and catamarans under motor, specifically through short chop. This may well be one area where the monohull is queen. Our catamaran seemed very bouncy going through the short chop, much more than we expected, and despite lying almost completely still in the same type of waves when at anchor. The pups will be joining our voyages in April. And we'll make sure to give you a peek at them very soon - we'll be doing an abbreviated "life story" and Q&A soon! -Kate Video gear used in this video: Sony A7ii camera with 35mm and 55mm lenses Sony ECM-GZ1M Zoom Microphone Sony RX1R Mkii camera (fixed 35mm 2.0 lens) RodeVideo Micro compact microphone GoPro Hero5 Black GoPro Pro 3.5mm Mic Adapter Rode SmartLav Black Pro Basic Common Outdoor Sports Kit for GoPro Hero 5 Boat info: 2004 Seawind 1160 Catamaran (Deluxe style) Music by: 00:00 Martin Gauffin: 'Daydreaming at Work' from Epidemic Sound (http://www.epidemicsound.com) 05:30 Joakim Karud: 'Longing' 06:55 Peter Sandberg: 'The Warmth of the Sun on her Skin' from Epidemic Sound (http://www.epidemicsound.com) Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sailing_with_dogs/ Check out our website: http://www.sailingwithdogs.com Find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SailingWithDogs/

This is not a sailing video. But you'll see plenty of sea water, and even some cute Christmassy dogs, in our first 'Adventures Ashore' short. If you enjoy this video, please give us a thumbs up, and definitely leave a comment to let us know if you'd like to see more videos like this one! Josh and I spent the holidays in the UK this year, in the seaside town of Exmouth, Devon where my parents live. We're only back once in every three years for Christmas, and I relish the Christmas Swim each time. This year I decided to leave my stills camera at home and get some video footage instead - 30 minutes on three cameras were then compiled to make this little film. Huge thanks to my parents' friend Steve Hughes for kindly wearing one of our GoPros into the water (he actually partakes in the swimming each year) and enabling us to stay warm and dry. The slow-mo water footage is from the POV of Steve's chest. :) The Exmouth Christmas Swim has been an annual tradition in this small Devonshire town for around 50 years, starting in the late 1960s with a group of six swimmers. It seems to grow in size each year and there are now thousands of swimmers and spectators on the beach by 11am each December 25th. Many of the swimmers don fancy dress (what we Brits call costume), usually with a Christmas theme, and last time there was even a man in a neon green Rudolph mankini. Maybe next time I will join them ? This was our first time trying out the Karma Grip for GoPro. It is pretty great! I don't like it quite as much as the DJI Osmo in terms of controls, but I found the battery life to be MUCH better, and it means I can blend the footage from multiple sources more easily (I'm already having to deal with GoPro and Sony files). Please share with friends and family in the Exmouth area if you happen to come across this video. :) Video gear used in this video: Sony A7ii camera with 55mm lenses Sony ECM-GZ1M Zoom Microphone GoPro Hero5 Black GoPro Karma Grip Music by: 00:11 Andrew Applepie: 'Special Home Alone Christmas Beat' 01:35 Magnus Ringblom: 'Spirit of Christmas 5' - Music by Epidemic Sound (http://www.epidemicsound.com) Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sailing_with_dogs/ Check out our website: http://www.sailingwithdogs.com Find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SailingWithDogs/
Continuing our journey on our Seawind 1160, up the Gulf Coast of Florida. We finally get a chance to put up the sails on the new boat! If we had the dogs aboard too, we'd actually be true to our name. ;) It was a leisurely day of sailing and motorsailing up to Cayo Costa State Park where we spent the night at anchor. On the way we took a swim off the boat in the most beautifully calm water, and Josh inspected the hulls from sea level. I had fun giving the GoPro Hero5 its first splash around, both while swimming and dangling from the boat - I'm yet to figure out the best angle for those cool through-the-water shots though. I also, finally, saw some dolphins close-up. I wasn't sure if I'd captured them on camera, but you get to see them briefly. I grin like a kid in a candy store every time I see these beautiful creatures, although I had to laugh when Josh proclaimed that Florida is "dirty with dolphins". I'm definitely the more excitable one ? After a relaxing sail, we decided to take the dinghy to shore to explore the town, but we were faced with yet more engine issues - this time the outboard was the culprit. We'll be having it inspected and hopefully repaired or cleaned soon. The pups will be joining our voyages in April. And we'll make sure to give you a peek at them over the winter months in Boston. It's finally time to take our new cat on her first sail! We leave the dock in Naples, FL and head up the coast towards Tampa on our Australian built 38' catamaran, a Seawind 1160. We motor out into the gulf slowly as it's pretty shallow in the harbor. There are lots of pelicans watching our departure, but they're not quite as cool as our on-board owl, Hootie! This first trip is just a few hours of motoring north to a quiet, protected anchorage in San Carlos Bay, and it is here that we anchor the catamaran for the first time. We have an electric windlass button in the cockpit which is really great - it means Josh can do most of the work from the helm, and my job is simply checking that the anchor drops properly, then making sure that we let out the right amount of chain. A future project will be adding colored silk ribbons to the anchor chain every 5 or ten feet so that I don't have to "guestimate" how much chain we have out. Or do you guys have any other good tips for this? We're looking forward to the time when we can simply relax with a cocktail and a good book in the evenings - right now any spare time is spent working on the boat. This episode we have yet more engine issues to resolve - Josh gets his hands dirty fixing the water pump on the starboard engine. We were lucky to find a spare water pump on board! Thanks for following along on our adventures at sea, and we promise that the dogs will eventually be joining us - just a few more months and we'll be on the boat with our black labradors Porter and Lily in tow for a mammoth sailing adventure! In this episode we head back to Florida to take ownership of our new-to-us cat, Double-Wide! She's a beautiful 2004 Seawind 1160 catamaran, built in Australia, and we're her fourth owners. She's in pretty good shape, but definitely isn't without issues, as we discovered during our trip. http://www.sailingwithdogs.com/2016/12/02/we-officially-own-a-new-boat/ We start our time in Florida meeting up with Chuck, Double-Wide's previous owner, and he helps us to get familiar with the boat, hoists the jib which had been packed away in storage, and talks us through a bunch of spare parts that had been collected over the years by him and the owner before him, Cameron. Then, it was off for a whirlwind shopping tour of Naples, FL with visits to West Marine (where I pondered the style of womens' sailing clothing - really guys, we need some better options!), Bed Bath & Beyond, and Target. We spent the evening unpacking then had an early night. Next morning, we had some tasks to complete before we could leave, including inflating the "ancient pice of crap" dinghy we'd inherited with the boat - we were happy it seemed to still be in one piece even if it didn't look especially pretty ? Finally, we took off on our first sail on the new boat! More of that next time. Our first vlog! We take a late summer sail around Narragansett Bay (experiencing all kinds of weather, from sunshine to fog to squalls), and start our catamaran shopping by visiting an older Seawind 1160 that's on the market. No dogs with us this time, because Porter is recovering from knee surgery. They stayed home with the dog sitter while we enjoyed some quiet time. Visit our website at http://www.sailingwithdogs.com
