Taking on the inaugural Length of Britain Challenge set by Sail Scotland, Phil Sharp and his crew of two, Sean Conway and Alex Alley, brought their Class 40 yacht Bruichladdich across the finish line off John O’Groats at 2047.15 on Monday 14 December 2015 to set the first ever sailing speed record on the iconic 620nm British course from the south of England to the most northerly point of mainland Scotland. The record attempt began at 0855 on Friday 11 December off Land’s End, defining the first reference time at 3d 11h 52m 15s, an average speed of 7.39kn. In my opinion, there is no better way to learn about your boat and how to sail it than by doing it alone. I set out for this challenge with a 20 knot wind in my face. Heeling at close reach, I had to go to the bottom of the mast to take reefs. It was the first time I put put on my life jacket and harness. Then dropping the anchor alone in wind gusts and at night. As well as a wake up call from my friend Bix. My boat was drifting away during a powerful squall in the middle of the night! That did not stop me and Bix from going out on the town to have a good time.
