The cold front passes over us on Sunday night, November 19, but then stalls just south of us and lifts back as a warm front. This results in three more days of near gale conditions. My main bilge pump fails forcing me to bail with a smaller pump and a bucket. The rough weather is followed by several days of pleasant conditions, but light head winds slow our progress considerably.

Here's a complete install video of our new Cape Horn Wind Vane http://capehorn.com/ We probably should have gone over this in the video. We've spent the last two years, researching and looking into pretty much every brand of vane out there. I think our decision boils down to 3 main points. 1: Aesthetics. We LOVE how clean and well designed the Cape Horn is. No external lines, no extra pipes and hardware hanging off the back. It just looks GOOD and functions even better. Sure, that means it takes a bit longer to instal, but, you only have to install it once! Each unit is custom made to fit your boat like a well tailored suit. They can adapt them to mount on any transom in almost any position. 2: No external rudder. There is a running myth, that if you have a vane with it's own rudder that it can act as a "back up" if your main rudder is ever damaged. But, to us, that logic doesn't hold. Because unless the vane rudder is removed when your main one is damaged, it will most likely get damaged as well. Our rudder has a full skeg, and several is a full foot or two above the keel, so we would have to drift backwards into a cliff in order for it to be damaged. In which case the wind vane would be gone too! 3: Others reviews. We've read many blogs, forums, comments, and listened to people talk about their own wind vane experience, and we've heard many people complain about how their wind vane functions. "It's picky", "it only works in certain conditions", "it's hard to adjust or trim properly". Most of the boats we've talked to who have a vane installed never seem to use it, because an electronic pilot is so much "easier". Now, we haven't seen as many Cape Horns out there, but the few people we've talked to, and the many comments we've read about them, not one complaint or trouble with them. That to us may have been the most important factor in our decision. They just seem to WORK! If your sails a well balance and trimmed, the Cape Horn will steer you though anything. The passages between islands are now on average of about five days each. The weather forecast is ummm.... unpredictable. The passages have been wet, wild and fast! We are well away from civilization out here. Hundreds and hundreds of miles from anything except for this mostly submerged reef they call Beveridge Reef. These reefs are a welcome sight as really help break up the longer passages! And yes, it seems that sometimes at night they are impossible to see. The story of the Catamaran wreck at Beveridge happened in the middle of the night. A full speed collision forcing a British Family onto the reef. Ripping off the sail drives and rudders leaving gaping holes in the aft. But luckily another boat resting inside heard the calls for help via the radio. When morning came they were able to get off the boat and tow it inside the atoll where it rests now half-submerged. As we get further into this season we sail deeper and deeper into the remote reaches of the South Pacific. The further we go, the more adventure we find. More than we could have ever imagined. Obviously, we use a lot of cameras with mounts on our cars, but this is the first that we thought we would try that is mounted to stay in the car at all times. It’s fairly economical, under $100 US. In fact, this one is $70 US right now, as of December 2017. This camera takes decent video and gives the user good clear audio as well. The stabilization seems decent as well. I was impressed with both day and night filming. What I did not like about this camera was the phone interface and the menu. It constantly defaulted to having the WIFI off and also the WIFI was five menu items in, which was a pain to work with. I really hope to see the interface improve with this one. The "hard-headed" Australian Skipper of Scallywag has his problems as Tony his new navigator has broken his arm and on watch he head-butted the Radar Dome on the back of the yacht. It's broken but unbowed, the radar dome that is. Meanwhile after a huge gybe in 50 knots that ripped off the main track from the mast AkzoNobel finally got the main down and furled and work began on fabricating a solution. Now they fix the new track and run up the main with unexpected results. Turn The Tide On Plastic heads to join the fleet but when the wind vane fails at the top of the mast Aussie Liz Wardley goes up to fix it. Can anything more happen? Yes Charlie and his gang on Vestas also has Main headboard problems but they decided to wait a few days before finding some rookie to send up the mast skyward. Nous avons passé deux semaines au Kenya, deux semaines extraordinaires, riches en découvertes et en émotions. La première semaine, nous l'avons consacrée au safari. Nous sommes passés, dans un premier temps, par le Masaï Mara, qui nous a offert toute sa richesse, sa densité d'animaux incroyable, son caractère verdoyant improbable. Puis nous sommes allés au Lac Naivasha et ses hippopotames, ses aigles pêcheurs, etc. Pour finalement passer une nuit au bord du Lac Elementaïta, salé de nature et proposant un panorama sur les flamands roses de toute beauté. Ensuite, nous avons pris la direction du parc Ambosseli, au pied du Kilimandjaro. Tantôt complètement aride, tantôt bénéficiant de la fonte des neiges du point culminant d'Afrique et offrant des marécages où toutes les espèces se retrouvent. Cette première semaine s'est achevée par la visite du parc Tsavo Est, plus à l'image de ce que l'on s'imaginait d'un safari. Terre rouge, climat aride, animaux plus rares. Après un transit par Mombasa, nous avons pris l'avion vers l'île de Lamu au nord du pays. Son architecture Swahili, ses maisons blanches, ses murs en pierre de corail, ses boutres, nous ont fait nous évader totalement. Visite hors du temps, baignade et farniente sur les plages de sable blanc où les îliens s'y rendent en âne. Nous sommes revenus à la réalité en revenant sur le continent et cette fois en séjournant quelques jours à Watamu. Plages idylliques, rochers découpés, mais tourisme de masse nous ont fait encore nous rapprochés de la vie à l'occidentale. Notre voyage s'est terminé par la visite de Mombasa, carrefour historique de l'Afrique de l'Est depuis lequel nous avons repris un avion pour Mayotte.

The boat utilises a hard-chined, plywood construction and this design of boat is a proven, capable, ocean-going vessel. Boat building with plywood is a relatively easy and cost-effective way to produce a strong, monocoque-style boat hull. These videos aim to show the way in which I go about it. It's finally time to find our boat!! ⛵️ We have also had some good news and managed to sell our Nissan Sunny for almost DOUBLE the $ we paid for it, which means we will be able to spend a little more on our boat 🎑 We packed up from our house sit in Auckland & started our road trip towards Bay of Plenty. 🚗 We decided to live in our car during the twelve days in between our house sits, to try and save as much money as possible for our boat. There are two boats in Rotorua that we went to view and it was time to decide which one we were going to choose! We set up a camping spot by Lake Rotorua.
