That’s a wrap on our shakedown sail! In this episode, after sailing back across Lake Michigan to our home port of Racine, Wisconsin, and getting a little weird during the crossing (being alone on a boat definitely makes you go a little batty), we talk through everything we learned during our 3-week cruise along the west coast of Michigan. We wanted to do a proper shakedown cruise for two reasons: 1) FUN. After years of planning, saving and searching for a sailboat, we wanted to have some fun, see the west coast of Michigan, and sail into Charlevoix to achieve one of Kirk’s childhood dreams. 2) TEST the BOAT. Even though we’d taken some daysails, up until this point we hadn’t used the boat like a cruiser, which was the big plan. Before setting off south from our home port, we wanted a better idea of what we needed to fix, change or upgrade on the boat. A multi-week shakedown sail/cruise gave us a much better understanding of what it was like to live aboard our Tartan 37. Episode 34 This week Ricky fits in some more hatches. We fit in the trims so we can start adding some acoustic & insulation foam for our headliner. We sand a bit more and epoxy prime our window frames & any nooks and crannies that we previously might have missed. We stepped the mizzen mast. It has been wrapped up for a long time in the shop waiting on other projects to be complete like repairing the coach house roof. Now that those projects are complete and the paint is down on the roof, the big day arrived. It is very nerve-wracking watching big expensive pieces of metal from your home/oat dangling from a strap in the air. We followed the maritime tradition of putting coins below the mast. For us it was pretty cool to put the ones in there that means something to us and the boat. First, we have a Silver half dollar from 1978 (the year the boat was built). We also found a commemorative coin from the 1978 Mardi-Gras parade that was thrown from a float from the "Krewe of Poseidon" And then for the part that represents the major refit we did another coin from 2018. We put in a silver eagle piece. We used 5200 and adhered them right to the top of the mast step so they won't rattle around. We also sealed them in plastic coin cases to that the metal doesn't come in contact with the aluminum mast step and cause corrosion. This was a fun project for us to do to the boat as the mast was being stepped. We also took the girls to go see the Incredibles 2 movie this week. It was really good and there are a lot of laughs even for the adults. If you see it, you will love the scenes on the dad helping the little one with the math wondering "Why did they have to change math" We also forgot to bring the halyards down to the boat the day it was scheduled to be stepped and I didn't want to delay again so I ran to the chandlery next door and bought all new halyards. While it cost us a few bucks for sure, this is something that we considered anyway and this was a good reason to do so. :) Here are some links that you can order your half dollars by year as well. Partir du Québec sur un voilier Tanzer 28 1974, naviguer dans les canaux de la côte Est des États-Unis et traverser jusqu'aux Bahamas fut la plus belle expérience de notre vie. Certains se préparent pendant des années et des années pour ce genre de voyage, d'autres y rêvent mais ne partent jamais, et d'autre plus naïfs, y vont sur un coup de tête. Après une préparation du Galway Bay de 4 mois, nous avons mis le bateau à l'eau et quitté le pays 2 mois plus tard. Ce vidéo est un ramassi de beaux et de moins beaux moments, de cette merveilleuse aventure. Du bonbon à mes yeux, puisque se sont mes souvenirs. J'espère que vous apprécierez, mais aussi, que ceux qui rêvent de partir partiront. Parce que après tout, ce n'est qu'une question de choix. P.S. I came second in race 1, had to miss race 2 due to other commitments and only managed a 4th in race 3, so if I want a chance of winning the series I badly need a good result this week. Better Sunflower Oil!) Sift flour on the table, make a small pit in the middle, add all the other ingredients and knit it until it becomes a very soft dough. Or you can also use your kitchen aid with a dough hook to do this job for you. Afterwards you oil the dough, cover it and let it sit for 30 min. Now you roll the dough until it has the size of a plate, oil it again and let it sit for another 5 min. Now the tough work starts – you have to roll the dough so thin that you are able to read a newspaper through it. You have to use your hands for this. As a small hint, take off your rings, it will make this work way easier! Now you can fill the dough (2/3). Brush butter/fat on the rest (1/3), furl it, roll it, brush it with butter/fat from the outside and put it in the oven. After 45min, 200 degrees, it’s ready. Strudel filling First version: Apples 10 Big Apples (already sliced very thin) 80g Granulated Sugar Cinnamon 100g Breadcrumbs 80g Butter Raisins 120g Cream (Rahm) Brown the Breadcrumbs in butter, let it cool down, add sugar and cinnamon. Cover 2/3 of the dough with the cream (Rahm), put the roasted breadcrumbs on top, spread the apples and the raisins over it. Brush the rest of the dough with butter/fat (1/3), furl it, roll it, and brush it with butter/fat from the outside again.

Being in Hawaii and all we figured it would be a good place to try out surfing for the first time. It was hard to say the least! We also explore the island Oahu and go hiking, visit the famous North Shore and Pearl Harbor. We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.
