24 hours sailing. We are arriving in Rabbat where we are greeted by locals giving us fish and wanting some whiskey in return :) Then at the harbor, where the police and customs where waiting, we where instantly confronted with their problem with my flags. Then after having a look at my boat papers they told us to leave. They didn't look real?!?!? I've been sailing with these papers for over 2 years and never had problems? We had a long trip from Gibraltar, where tired and we where not allowed even one night!! They kicked us out into the night again. Not a warm welcome Marocco. Settle in… we’ve got our first 20+ min episode for you! The river trip is right around the corner, and our preparations start getting serious. The list of boat projects we want to complete (as discussed in Ep 15) before leaving Lake Michigan is LONG. If, hypothetically, we had to pick just one project to complete before leaving, it would be adding a windlass to help us handle our new anchor. As boat projects go, what you think should take x amount of time takes 5x. This project was no different. The big hurdle was our chain pipe — it was located EXACTLY where we wanted to install our new Lofrans Manual Windlass. So, after fiberglassing closed the old chain pipe hole, installing the windlass over the top, then cutting a new hole in the deck for the new chain pipe, our windlass was finally completely installed and ready for chain. I (Lauren) also start my first sewing project — covers for our teak handrails, two winch covers and a compass cover. Our lovely boat neighbor, Bruce, lent me his antique Singer sewing machine, and also gave Kirk advice and guidance throughout the windlass installation. Hope you enjoy! Lauren & Kirk P.S. The Northwestern coast of Spain is prone to fog and this week, we head right into it on our way from La Coruña to Islas Cíes. After a couple of weeks spent away from the oat on a business trip, Ryan is back at the boat and we can finally continue our journey towards the Med. We day hop in the Spanish Rias and anchor at Ria de Camariñas and Ria de Muros. On both days, the fog catches us by surprise, and we end up spending our passage motoring, spotting for the numerous crab pots and fishing boats that famously navigate the waters of Galicia. On the first day, the fog had us nervous, but the visibility was still OK. On the second day though, we could only see a couple of boat length in front of us, and the captain was definitely nervous. The type of fog we encountered and that is common in this area of Spain was called “advection fog”. On this episode we depart the quaint village of Blidö with its beautiful Sandkil Ship, Helmi (http://www.helmi.se/en/about-helmi-2239848) and head north for (insert drum roll) THE ÅLAND ISLANDS! We had a lovely quiet sail until then winds gave out then we motorsailed our way out into open water with the Gulf of Bothnia to Port and the Baltic Sea to Starboard. The conditions were so calm it felt more like a large lake than a large sea and we were happy to have a day of obstacle free sailing. We arrived at Mariehamn, Åland's only real city at around 12am and the docks and streets were full of people enjoying the midnight sun. I have also uploaded a corresponding episode on my “A Stern View Podcast” that is something of a cruisers guide to anchorages and harbors. This new episode and the first of the new season features Neil and myself talking about what Blidö has to offer and what to expect of the faculties. After walking away from a big project boat in La Paz, we hit the road, looking for a new, larger cruising boat to take us around the world! We start in San Carlos, Mexico looking at a Tayana 42, Hardin 44 ans Westsail 42. Then, we road trip our way up to southern California. In San Diego we look at a Mason 43, Formosa 46, Wauquiez Amphitrite and another Westsail 42. With two years to go until the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, this was the first opportunity for nations to qualify for the Games and a key opportunity to start putting theory into practice for teams. Make no mistake, Aarhus was a big deal for all and the World Sailing Show was in the thick of it. This month we also head to Portugal for the TP52 World Championships and an exclusive guided tour of the world’s most advanced keelboats, as well as checking in with the Extreme Sailing Series in Cardiff.

The all new 2019 X-Yachts X 46 is here and it is just sailed from the boat yard to Ishøj boat show. X-Yachts is a Danish build quality boat with hull cast in epoxy and carbon fiber, the X 46 is as the rest of it's family a racing boat but also build for comfort and safety. The yard are very focused on high quality, stability and performance and therefore it is equipt with a keel stepped mast and a bulb lead keel. This boat is also equipment with a 4-cyl. 57HP. Voile téléguidée au Lac Champlain avec mon Mono 800 mm par 20-25 noeuds de vent. Je n'avais malheureusement que le jeu de voile B, mais le C aurait été plus approprié. Le voilier était constamment en surcharge... qui plus est, la quille touchait régulièrement. Une belle petite sortie tout de même!

We knew that Kejstral wasn’t performing 100%, her speed was limited both under sail and on the engine, but what we hadn’t expected was the amount of growth she had accumulated in the 2+ years since she was last anti-fouled. Taking her out of the water was a must this year, so we opted for the special offer D-Marin in Didim were offering from the 1st of June. This is a haul out, jet wash and 10 days on the hard or in the water for the great price of 300 euro. With electricity and water included in the price this is a great time to get the job done, apart from the sweltering heat that Turkey has to offer at this time of year. With help from great friends Andrew & Helen we soon had barnacle city scraped off, the hull polished and lots of other jobs completed. Two coats of black International anti-foul on the main hull area & 3 coats on all leading edges including rudder, keel & bow point, gives Kejstral enough protection for another two years. Dee and Helen brave the power polisher and give the hull a good cut and polish, while Andrew and I clean up on all the little jobs.
