After being weather bound in Norfolk VA for 8 days, s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) left Norfolk on the tail end of yet another large weather system. Sailing to Bermuda started on a bright but cold November day, with strong offshore winds over a flat sea. So we sailed very fast down the Virginia coast, passed Kitty Hawk, and out into the Atlantic. We were among several other yachts all making the same break-for-it southwards, in this weather window. Crossing the Gulf Stream was a bit lumpy but thankfully with lighter following winds. We watched the water temperature rise from 15DegC to 26DegC in just a few hours. We could then pack our thermal jackets and wooly hats away in a very deep locker! After 8 hours of motor sailing the wind came around in front of us and put us hard on the wind for the rest of the trip, excepting the last afternoon where we had a beam reach into the island. Henrik Bergesen's Norwegian Class40 Hydra, skippered by Tristan Kinloch, finished the RORC Transatlantic Race at 22:02:23 UTC on Sunday, 09 December in an elapsed time of 15 days 10 hrs 2 mins 23 secs. Hydra was runner-up in the Class40 Division to Catherine Pourre's Eärendil. Early in the race, Hydra was very much in contention for the class win until a rudder problem forced the team to make a pit stop in the Cape Verde Islands. After completing the race, Hydra's team received a warm welcome on the dock from RORC CEO Eddie Warden Owen and Race Officer Steve Cole. Marina Manager Charlotte Bonin greeted the team with ice cold beers and presented the crew with a basket of Grenadian goods, including rum and chocolates, courtesy of the Grenada Tourism Authority. It's been an epic race; absolutely fantastic," commented Henrik Bergesen dockside at Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina. "I have had a great crew and we had perfect conditions. We had an issue with the rudders, but we came back and did a good job; we kept going and got back into second place, so I am very happy about that. After eating freeze dried food and desalinated water, the beer tastes really good. We are looking forward to some real food; barbecue chicken I think! After this race, we're well prepared for the RORC Caribbean 600 in February and it should also be great fun."

We had a restful night and didn't have any problems with the anchorage. This morning we are sailing over to Pelican Cays which are a series of small islands managed by the land and sea park. We are looking forward to getting off the boat, walking the beach, swimming and hopefully finding a coconut or two. As we approached Pelican Cay we could see gigantic palm trees and an incredible sandy beach. We were so excited to go ashore and do some exploring, but upon dropping anchor, we found that there was a strong tidal current flowing perpendicular to the wind, which was sure to wrap our keel. Not wanting to give up, we tried two other nice looking anchorages, but found the same strong flowing cross current which left us no option, but to anchor deeper inside the bay away from the inlets, and unfortunately too far from Pelican Cay to check it out in the dinghy.
