Transportation in the Dominican Republic can get pretty interesting. We walked up to the marina entrance to catch a public bus for $1 US but then "Mikey" stopped by on his motorbike and asked if we wanted a ride, so of course we hopped on. He took us to and around the city of Samana and all the way back to Puerto Bahia. I think we paid him $5 US for the trip. We love the Dominican Republic :-). L’oceano ricorda anche il nome del mio ultimo album, che ho scelto di intitolare Atlantico. C’è però tantissima bellezza intorno a noi fragile e da proteggere, a partire dai nostri mari e gli oceani ormai invasi da isole di plastica. Chi vorrebbe vivere su un’isola di plastica? Per me quell’enorme distesa d’acqua ha sempre un fascino particolare, è forza, è magia, è vita! Il mare è vita, una risorsa unica che la plastica mette in pericolo. Ormai si parla di isole di plastica nell’oceano e le nostre spiagge sono infestate dalla presenza della plastica. Difendere la natura. Rispettare la natura è un dovere di tutti, questo è il mondo che ci è stato affidato e va curato e conservato anche con piccoli gesti. È responsabilità di ciascuno impegnarsi al massimo per salvare la bellezza di ciò che ci circonda, ciascuno nel proprio piccolo, con piccoli gesti quotidiani. È importante informarsi, conoscere, sapere. L’emergenza è reale e non c‘è più tempo. Il mio impegno Io sono ambasciatore italiano di Planet or Plastic di National Geographic, campagna importante per sensibilizzare sull’emergenza ambientale causata dall’uso della plastica monouso che sta avvelenando i nostri mari e soffocando il pianeta Già dal precedente tour avevamo iniziato a lavorare in questa direzione, anche grazie all’impegno di North Sails al nostro fianco, che come me, cerca di condividere questa urgenza di tutela degli oceani dall’inquinamento della plastica. Durante il tour abbiamo prestato attenzione anche alle piccole cose, per esempio: i miei musicisti, i tecnici e tutte le persone che lavoravano con me hanno sostituito le bottigliette di plastica con le borracce, e l’impatto è stato ridotto al minimo. Per Fuori Atlantico Tour abbiamo raggiunto un risultato di cui sono molto orgoglioso: è un tour a emissioni zero e sono molto soddisfatto, perché abbiamo suonato in luoghi magici, immersi nella meraviglia della natura e lo abbiamo fatto con il massimo rispetto. Sono molto fiero anche del mio pubblico che si è impegnato per non lasciar traccia dopo i nostri concerti. Abbiamo anche ricevuto i complimenti di diversi organizzatori. I piccoli gesti sono importanti possono fare la differenza: utilizzare una borraccia al posto delle bottigliette, fare raccolta differenziata con cura e limitare quanto più possibile l’uso di oggetti monouso! Ho anche lanciato per questa estate una challenge: #estatesenzaplastica, per incentivare quanta più gente possibile a compiere piccoli gesti virtuosi e i cui risultati sono visibili sul sito internet. Harm Müller-Spreer’s Platoon team won the Rolex TP52 World Championship title on the Bay of Palma today, but the German-flagged team, led by the Hamburg-based owner-driver did not make it easy for themselves as they had to contend with two additional penalty points that they were given for twice making contact with rival boats as well as two penalties for different infringements during a tense, nervy showdown with Azzurra. But Platoon’s unerring consistency during Wednesday’s three races – a fantastic showcase of speed and agility in a brisk offshore northwesterly wind – when they put together two wins and a fifth, was enough for Müller-Spreer’s super solid, tight-knit team to ride their luck much more than they should have needed to, to emerge with their second Rolex TP52 World Championship title in three years, winning over Azzurra by two points.

A pair of third places gained in light sea breeze conditions from the white-hot, 11-strong fleet gives Tina Plattner and the crew of Phoenix 12 the overall lead after the first two races at the Rolex TP52 World Championship on the Bay of Palma. Theirs was a very encouraging opening, and caps a good day for the Plattner family crews as father Hasso on Phoenix 11 finished second in the second race and lies fifth overall. Phoenix 12, the older of the two Phoenix boats, put in the best performance of a first day that was not short on drama. At the start of the second beat on the first race, the mast on Ergin Imre’s Provezza crumpled over the side with no warning and no obvious reason. It is a devastating blow for a crew that won the second regatta of the season and were among the top contenders for the world title as well as for the season-long 52 SUPER SERIES title. All of the 52 SUPER SERIES shore crews and sailors have rallied behind Provezza offering every help possible to get the popular Turkish-flagged team, which won here in 2017, back on the water as soon as possible.

Delivering a 1,1,2 from three of the four races sailed so far, Takashi Okura’s Sled team now lead the Rolex TP52 World Championship just one point up ahead of the 2017 World Champions Platoon of German owner-driver Harm Müller-Spreer. If the Bay of Palma has a reputation for consistent, steady seabreeze conditions, the second race of the day rather upset that notion. A 25 degree shift in wind direction complicated the first run, the prelude to a funky, challenging second half of the race, which was completed in a dying, very unsettled breeze. After winning the first race of the day, Race 3 of the world championship, Sled were able to hold fast through the tricky moments.

A testing, north-westerly offshore wind of 12-17kts produced fantastic racing conditions today at the Rolex TP52 World Championship on the Bay of Palma out of Puerto Portals as Harm Müller-Spreer’s Platoon took control of the title race. They posted two first places and a fifth to lead the championship by seven points going into the final day, Thursday. But for all that the 2017 world champions stepped clear of the pack today, sailing smart and fast, they did start each of the three races on the back foot, forced each time to climb through the fleet. After seven races their average points score per race remains three points. They have retained the level of consistency that would normally lead to a regatta win. Unfortunately Takashi Okura’s Sled did not manage to capitalise from their position at the top of the world championship standings. Two penalties sent them to fifth overall, now 19 points distant from Azzurra, which lies second.

A series of thunderstorms put plans to rest on the third racing day here at the Rolex TP52 World Championship Puerto Portals 2019. The fleet of 11 boats was held ashore while a first squall blew through with strong winds, torrential rain and lightning. With another one forecast and tracked on the real time weather maps, racing was cancelled for the day. The standings remain the same. With four races sailed Takashi Okura’s Sled are at the top of the leaderboard, one point up on 2017 world champions Platoon. Principal Race Officer Maria Torrijo says she will aim to run three heats on Wednesday if the weather permits. After breaking their mast on Sunday, Ergin Imre’s Provezza have stepped a spare, replacement which they brought from Valencia and they will be ready to race for Wednesday. The fourth day of the Rolex TP52 World Championship Puerto Portals should see racing start around 13:00 CEST.

In this episode I explain and shows how to glue laminate the wooden keel for the Haven. The white oak keel must bent over the floor timbers. Typically the keel would be one piece of lumber. However, sourcing a white oak board that is over 1 1/2" and 17' long was a issue. Also a broad the size would have been needed to be steam bent to fit on the boat. I therefore decided to glue laminated 4 boards to get the desired curve. In doing so I show how I resawed the oak timbers and used a flexible epoxy to glue them up directly on the boat. I then show how I used bronze bolts to bolt the keel to the floor timbers.
