This week's episode is about RopeWork & Knot Tying. In this introductory video I walk you through the, 'Lightning' Method' of casting a Bowline which is great for posts and large rings. This can be a life saver in certain circumstances and is your #1 Chance to be a crew hero! This is the introductory teaser for a much longer (35 min) video that covers all aspects of Bowlines that you can watch over on Patreon for the price of a beer! Video is available from 1400 Hours AST on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/themariner?fan_landing=true In it you'll find multiple tying variations for the bowline and an explanation of when to use them. There are also methods of creating stable bowlines that will not shake out in dynamic situations & discussion about the breaking strength of bowlines made in modern kernmantel and Class 1 ropes as opposed to traditional 3-strand rope, Finally, I chat through the history and applications for the bowline in modern sailing. If you want to stretch your seamanship knowledge - there is only one question: Is it worth a beer to you? https://ivtyachtsales.com Contact Ian Van Tuyl the Jeanneau Yachts (Jeanneau 64) expert Video slideshow of the Jeanneau 64 Yacht Sailboat showing off its innovative design & good looks. The Jeanneau 64 Yacht is now the most successful 60’+ yacht in the world. The Jeanneau 64 hull was designed by Phillippe Briand, a true master among naval architects accustomed to designing many of the most prestigious superyachts. His design goal when designing the Jeanneau 64 was to design a superyacht at a human scale. The Jeanneau 64 is designed to bring you everything that has made the Jeanneau lineup so popular, as well as combining the design elements Briand has incorporated into superyachts. The Jeanneau 64 is designed to provide immense comfort but is also unquestionably a sailor’s boat. The hull features a hard chine which increases performance, speed, stability, and also allows for a roomier interior. The immense cockpit on the Jeanneau 64 will occupy over 40% of the deck area, providing an unprecedented level of space above deck. Below deck, one would find an equally ample amount of space. Born of a close partnership between Philippe Briand and Andrew Winch, the Jeanneau 64 features elegant lines with classic proportions. Contemporary deck styling gives the yacht a timeless appeal. Every Jeanneau Yacht is designed to be a sailor’s boat, and the Jeanneau 64 is no exception. This flagship is secure, fast, and enjoyable to sail. Philippe Briand has delivered a modern hull that incorporates a hard chine for increased speed, stability, and interior volume. Deck Life Life aboard a yacht is lived in the fresh air. Careful attention has been paid to the way we spend time on board, with dedicated spaces for relaxation, reading, cooking, dining and sunbathing. You will find living areas for gathering with family and friends and quiet spaces for communing with natural surroundings. Generosity of Space Meticulous attention to detail, quality and style are the hallmarks of Andrew Winch’s designs. Every space has been carefully considered for comfortable living. Engineered for Choice With several thousand possible combinations of fabrics, woods, leathers and interior and exterior layouts, the Jeanneau 64 is truly a semi-custom yacht.

It is almost impossible to get work as a yacht broker if you do not live in an area where yachts are located. There are a few exceptions to this, such as Zurich and London, but if you are serious about becoming a yacht broker the very best thing...and the FIRST thing you should do is move to an area where there are plenty of yachts. Here are a few suggestions: • South Florida, especially Fort Lauderdale. • The Balearic Islands, especially Mallorca and it’s capital Palma. • The South of France, especially Monaco and Antibes • San Remo, Italy. • Newport, Rhode Island • San Diego, California, • Sydney, Australia • Phuket • Hong Kong Of course, one thing that all those places have in common is that they are extremely expensive to live in. This may be a challenge for you, so be aware of the many budget options for board and lodging that are at your disposal. Here are five great tips that could make your move more affordable: • Check out www.yachting-pages.com and use their website search engine to look for “crew houses”. Crew often require reasonably priced accommodation for varying periods of time, so looking for a crew house will not only allow you to control your costs but also help you get started by meeting the right people. • Don’t get drawn in to the drink culture of yachties in the area that you move to. Yacht crew often have a considerable amount of expendable income and few if any overheads, so spending a hundred dollars on a night out is no big deal to them. If you have moved to a yachting area with the purpose of becoming a yacht broker then it is smarter to play the long game. It may take you a while to become financially stable, so save your money for rent and you can enjoy a celebratory Dom Perignon in style when you sell your first yacht! • Don’t be afraid to ask people you meet for cheap options for food and lodging. Just because somebody works in the yachting industry does not mean that they are any more wealthy than you. I spent two years working in and around Monaco and learned all of the most economic places to eat, from buying sandwiches at the Casino supermarket by the port to a little pizza place on Boulevard d’Italie (where I once bumped into Jenson Button and his girlfriend). Many, many people in the yachting industry have to work to a very tight budget whilst giving an impression of being very successful....so always ask! • Join local facebook groups in the area that you decide to move to. Antibes, for example, has a wonderful group called “Antibes Buy it Sell it Rent it”. There are often well priced opportunities for accommodation advertised, and once accepted as a member you could also post with your requirements. Almost every area in the world where there is a yachting community will also have a facebook group similar to this, and whilst the yachties who have “made it” can be difficult and unhelpful sometimes, the folk who are working their way into the industry tend to be tremendously supportive to each other. • Find a broker buddy. Actually, I only used “broker” buddy because it started with the letter “b”. It doesn’t matter what your “buddy’s” ambitions are, the important thing is to find somebody that you can get on with to share expenses. Sharing an apartment is so much cheaper than renting one on your own, and if you are both looking out for each other’s interests it is far better to have four ears to the ground rather than just two. Before you even set foot outside your front door on the way to the yachting destination of your choice, it would be wise to take a good look in the mirror and to ask yourself “who would want to give me a job?” Be realistic about it. How old are you? How long have you been in your current employment? What work skills and life skills have you accumulated so far, and how can these be put to good use? In my experience there are three categories of people who enquire about becoming a yacht broker. It is important to know who you are in order to build a successful strategy to achieving your goal and avoiding disappointment. Be prepared to work out your apprenticeship though, the best things in life seldom come without a price! So who are you? 1. The complete starter? 2. The dissatisfied worker? 3. The career builder?

Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. (PART 1) As you might know, we spent a heap of time sailing and living off the land in the Bahamas. We've been digging into our archives lately, during lock down. We really wanted to do a 'best of' show reel, mostly showing our attempts of self sufficiency. We were new to using a polespear, the traditional Bahamian primitive method of spear fishing, and Elayna was experiencing what it meant to be pregnant for the first time!
Back to vacation videos. Enough with Covid-19. Back to Thailand. One can dream, right? Back in January, we left Adang Island after a week of bliss to spend three days on the island of Koh Lipe, the more well known and popular island in the Adang-Rawi Archipelego. And, with that fame comes a double dose of tourists, trash issues, and immigration inefficiencies. Thankfully, the island is worth a visit - multiple hues of crystal clear aqua colored water, white sand beaches and swaying palm trees. It's a laid back place which you can easily navigate on foot, but "taxis" abound and for a set price, they will drive you anywhere! If it includes a hill in the ride, you might just get to do it twice! We highly recommend a visit to Koh Lipe! #kohlipe #thailand #malaysia #langkawi #ferry #adang-rawi NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too! As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. Hopefully, you will be as BLOWN AWAY from watching, as we are in experiencing and producing our adventures! HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT US? If you wish to support our video efforts, all we ask is that you SUBSCRIBE, give a THUMBS UP, SHARE our videos with your friends, AND COMMENT! WOULD YOU LIKE TO GET TO KNOW US MORE DEEPLY?

This is the 5th and final part of @Offshoresailingschools founder/owner Steve Colgate's story recalling his first TransAtlantic race from Cuba to Spain, and on to England. That time when Steve became the "doctor on board." We'll continue to launch new episodes every M-W-F based on memoirs Steve and Doris Colgate are writing to be published in 2021
