How can we make this boat a safer boat? This video addresses safety concerns on a Nauticat 38 Motor Sailor. The host specifically mentions the elevated aft deck and sliding doors as potential risks in heavy weather. He shares ideas to modify the boat to improve the safe boat experience. How we want to make our boat safer. How we want to rig our ketch rigged motor sailer. We have a Nauticat 38 motorsailer, and that is a fantastic boat. It is only two things we dont like with this boat. First thing is the elevated aft deck, that we think is unsecure in heavy weather. The other thing is the sliding doors on the side. I dont feel safe working on the aft deck, and I dont like climbing outside the boat in heavy weather. So, what can we do? I think I have found a solution. Follow me, and please give your comments on this down below. I really appreciate your comments on this. Have a look at this. This is our boat, with the sails she has today. I have rigged her so that I can do all sail handling from the aft deck. This works perfect in nice weather, but in heavy weather I don't like working on the aft deck. Then I want t stay inside the pilot house. So now I think: How can I operate the sails from inside the pilot house? Lets start with the mizzen. I can take a reef in the mizzen before I go indoors, and if the sheet is going from the aft deck to a position just outside the sliding door, then I can open the door and adjust this line. That should work, dont you think? Then, I have looked at the foresail. In heavy weather I want to furl the genoa in completely, and roll out a smaller self tacking jib. That will look like this. If this is self tacking, I can have the sheet to a winch just outside the sliding door. Then I can open the door, and operate this sheet as well from inside the pilot house. Then, the mainsail remains. I dont use the mainsail often, and in heavy weather it might be OK to use just the jib and the mizzen. What do you think? But it might be possible to put in two reefs in the main, and then get this sheet as well down to outside if the door. That will be the red line on the drawing. So, in heavy weather I will have the following sails: No genoa, this will be completely furled in. - Then a self tacking jib, this is the yellow sail. - Two reefs in the main, that is the red sail - One reef in the mizzen, that i the purple sail If all the sheets of these sails can be operated from just outside the door, and I also can adjust the area of the jib from that same position, then I would not need to leave the pilot house. What do you think about this solution? Do you think it will work? Do you think it will be worth the money? Have you seen someone rig the sails in this way before? I would love to read your comments, and to get inspiration on how to proceed on this project. Thanks a lot in advance! Yeah, and one more thing. I am also thinking about a wind vane for self steering, but that will be a later project. Did you like this? Please subscribe to get more content about Nauticat and sailing. Generally, I think the Nauticat is a very safe boat, but I have two concerns. 1. The raised aft deck is too high up. This can be dangerous in rough seas, and the guard rail is too low. 2. The access to the aft deck (cockpit) is through the sliding doors on the side. To get from the secure pilot house to the aft deck you need to climb outside the pilothouse. This can be dangerous in heavy weather. To help out this situation, I discuss some solutions in this video. How can we rigg the sails, and how can we operate the sails from inside the pilot house? Do you have thoughts on this solution? Do you have better ideas? I would love to see your comments below! Sailing through rough seas requires excellent boat handling skills. This boat demonstrates vessel stability even in heavy weather. It's important to have solid boat training to navigate in these conditions. Discussing the safety of the boat and how it handles in heavy seas. This motorsailer is strong and can handle rough seas. Considering boat safety is important for anyone yachting or boating. The narrator recounts a near-fatal incident while doing some solo sailing. He was thrown from his boat but survived, describing the experience as the day he almost died. He often sails single handed but this time was with a friend in a separate boat along the Norwegian coast. The day I almost died sailing! Once, when I was sailing alone, I was thrown out of the boat. Obviously I survived, but I was scared. I’ll tell you exactly what happened. Often when I sail, I sail single handed. That means that I am alone onboard. On this particular trip we were two friends who sailed together, each in our own boat. We were sailing along the Norwegian coast, in calm weather, for some days. Our boat is a Nauticat 38, while his boat was a Hallberg-Rassy 312. After a nice day at the sea we were approaching the small town Arendal. We had fair winds, with calm sea, but also some old swell coming in from the north sea. I started the engine, and took down the sails. The boat is a ketch, and the last sail down was the mizzen. Then I realized how much the mizzen had stabilized the boat. When the sails were down, the swell started to throw the boat around. It was not dramatical, but, yes, there were movements in the boat. Working on the raised aft deck, to pack the mizzen sail, then, suddenly, out of the blue, there was a wave coming that was bigger than the other ones. Loosing my balance, I clung to the mizzen boom, by pure reflex. The sheet was not tightened, and when I clung to the boom, we both went out off the side of the boat. Looking down, all I could see were my own legs five feet above the water. My grip got tighter around the mizzen boom. As you know, waves come and go, and the next wave was kicking the boat back upright. Both the boom and I came back, and seeing the aft deck below my feet, I just stepped down, and there I was, safe and secure, back in my boat. What a relief! I continued to pack the sail, thinking about what had just happened. All kinds of thoughts went through my head. Was I really outside the boat? What would have happened if I lost my grip? I was motoring with the autopilot engaged, and my friend in the Hallberg-Rassy was in front of us, so he could not see me falling out of the boat. We had agreed to meet in the harbor. Was I really working on the raised aft deck without my safety harness? Was that one wave actually big enough to kick me out of the boat? The Nauticat motorsailers are really great boats. They are comfortable and safe at sea, but the raised aft deck can be dangerous. The aft deck is surrounded by solid steel and teak railing for safety, but this railing is low. I am 6 feet 3 inches, and my centre of gravity is far above this rail. What did I learn? OK, I almost died this day. There were several reason for this. First, I was not really familiar with the boat and the movements in the boat. I was feeling secure with the mizzen sail up, that was stabilizing the boat. With the mizzen down I was surprised by the changes in the boats behavior. I do think that there was a, bigger than normal, wave that kicked me out. That is my opinion, who knows the fact? Second, the safety rail was too low, and I plan to raise that during this winter. And the last thing. I did not wear my safety hardness with the line attached to the boat. I should know better! Anyway. I did survive to tell the story. This way I can spend many more years out on this fantastic boat.

Dry boat - very easy - all year - even freezing winter. No condensation. No smelly boat. No rust og corrosion. Just more comfort! In this video you will see how we have installed a dehumidifier for fixed installation in a sailboat. The boat is a Bavaria C46 from 2024. What we have done is to place the dehumidifier in the very aft of the boat. The dehumidifier is then sucking the air from the centre of the boat, drying the air and blowing it back to four different places in the boat. The moisture is blown out of the transom of the boat as wet air (not water). The dry air is blown to both aft cabins, and to the bow of the boat and to the centre of the boat. This gives an air circulation of dry air, that will keep the boat free from condensation. Less condensation Less smell Less rust Less corrosion Longer lifetime on electrical cables and appliances More comfort Dry beds Try textiles Better second hand value of the boat About me: My name is Jarle in Norwegian, or "Charlie" in English. I am the founder of the Norwegian company "Bedre Inneklima AS" specialized in dehumidifiers. I am a boat owner myself, having a 1982 Nauticat 38. I run two channels on Youtube. One for the company showing all our products, and one as "Sailing Maja" where I talk about our boat (and other interesting boats..) It is great to be able to combine work and boats, and be able to talk to very happy customers having a nice and dry boat with a lot of comfort. I made this video to show you how you can get your boat dry and without condensation. I want to inspire you to sail further, in a comfortable and dry boat! This particular boat is a brand new Bavaria C46. The boat is the demonstration boat of the Norwegian Bavaria dealer. For this demo boat they wanted to show all the best equipment, and it was an honor for me to be asked to deliver a dehumidifier. A tour of a Bavaria C46, showcasing a dehumidifier installation. This boat video highlights the Arida Pro S12 dehumidifier and how it maintains indoor air quality. The dehumidifier helps with moisture control in the boat.

We're continuing the extensive boatwork on our boat project, specifically focusing on the teak deck. This involves a full boat restoration to enhance our boat life and prepare for more sailing adventures on a boat. Stay tuned for more updates! We start with some serious boatwork by removing the old teak deck, a major step in our boat restoration. After decades of weathering, the teak deck removal is necessary to prepare for new composite decking. This boat repair project is a big undertaking! New deck on an old boat. This 1982 Nauticat 38 is indoors to get a new teak deck on. Meet the professional who is doing the job, and listen to his opinion on the 42 year old teak. The Nauticat sailboat has sailed to Sweden to get this job done at the very small yard VakuumTeak i Väst ("Vacuum Teak in the West (of Sweden)"). This yard is small company that specializes in changing teak decks. The yard offers both vacuum-glued and traditional screwed teak decks and cockpits. Our boats must last for many years and withstand the hard wear and tear of sea, weather and wind. In addition, there are many important details on a boat that both need to be maintained and replaced. It doesn't matter if you have a motor boat or a sailboat, with many years of experience these guys take on your boat with a lot of dedication and a high spirit of service, to be able to meet your needs in a professional manner. The yard is located on the island of Orust in Sweden. This island is well known for Hallberg-Rassy, Malö, Najad and Regina of Vindö. Although the Nauticat is made in Finland, we are 100% confident that the Swedes will do a super job on on boat. It is hard to see our beloved Nauticat 38 being naked in this condition, but we are sure she will be one of the worlds best looking Nauticats when Kjetil and his team will be finished with her some time next year. Disclaimer: Although we talk nicely about this company, and show their name and logo in the video, we do not get payed or any reduction on the price for doing this. This channel on Youtube is a hobby for us, and we show this yard because they are good people that we want to help prosper. Please have a look at their website here: https://www.vakuumteak.se/ The same is true regarding the supplier of the new deck. We show them because we like them, and there is no economical benefit involved. Please visit their website here: https://www.m-ecodeck.com/ The last website we want to promote is the new owners of the Nauticat brand. You will find them here: https://nauticat.com/ Also here we haver no commercial interest. We still want to thank them for giving us permission to use the Nauticat name and logo. Please feel free to subscribe to this channel for more content on Nauticat, motor sailers, and cruising in boats in general. We do this to inspire you to sail further! Thanks for watching.

How well does the Nauticat actually sail? Is the Nauticat sailing well with sails alone, or do you need motorsailing? We have a Nauticat motorsailer, and we get these questions all the time. Is the Nauticat a good sailboat? How comfortable are the Nauticats, and and how are the Nauticat for live aboards? I want to start below the water line. Take a look at what is under the water. Look at the keel. Now you need to understand that all Nauticats are not the same. They can look similar above the water, but they might be different below the water. I want to divide the keel in different categories: Traditional long keel boats Have a look at this boat. This is a traditional motorsailer. You can see that the keel starts below the main mast, and goes all the way back to the rudder. The rudder is protected by the keel, and this boat has a great directional stability. This is a bluewater cruiser. The problem is that it is not fast, and it will not tack easily. Now, have a look at the second boat. Here you can see that the keel is shorter. It starts almost at the same place below the main mast, but it stops just in front of the mizzen mast. The rudder is at the same place, and is more exposed to dangers. This boat will have a better sailing performance. It will tack more easy, but it will also have less directional stability. By looking at the boat above water, you will not see this difference. They are both Nauticats. On the left we have the Nauticat 33. On the right we have the Nauticat 331. Now, let’s get one more boat into the picture. This is the Nauticat 321. This is an even more modern sailboat. The keel is even shorter, and it has only one mast. This is made for sailing performance. Higher speed, easy to tack, less sails, going higher against the wind, but will also miss the directional stability and the benefits of the ketch rig. So what is the best solution? That depends on how you want to use the boat. The long keel on the left is best for traditional bluewater sailors, who don’t tack every day, and who wants comfort rather that quick boat handling. It is also better for the shallow anchorages. The modern boat on the right is for those who want performance, and the middle is a great compromise of these two solutions. We have the Nauticat 38, and that is yet another solution. Have a look at this. It looks like the middle compromise from earlier, but this boat is special. This is a semi long keel boat, with what we call a skeg in front of the rudder. Let’s have a closer look. Here we see the rudder. I’ll put a green circle around the rudder. In front of the rudder you have the skeg. I’ll put a red circle around the skeg. What is the purpose of this? Well, This gives a fair protection of the rudder. The keel and skeg in combination gives a fair amount of directional stability. The keel and skeg does not connect, so you also have a fair sailing performance. It does not perform as well at the fin keel of the 321, but it is a very good compromise of all these different solutions. Please note, that all these boats are Nauticats. When you see them on the water, you can not really tell how they look under the water. So when you ask: Is the Nauticat a good sailer? Is the Nauticat performing well under sail alone, or do you need to motor in addition? Is the Nauticat a traditional long keel boat, or is it a modern yacht, but looking old? I can not give you the answer. This is because I don’t know what model you think of. I have now showed you four different variations. They are all good, but will perform different in different situations. What is best for you? I don’t know. I don’t know how you sail, or what you prefer. The Nauticat 38 is a semi long keel motorsailor with a skeg. So, not a traditional long keel, but also not a modern fin keel. Going against the wind is where she struggles. She can do it, but not as the modern fin keeled boats. At the other hand, she performs better that the long keel boats I showed you. So we are prepared to go a little less against the wind, and fill the sails a bit more from the side, or we start the engine and use both. This depends also on how good the skipper is to sail. Myself, I am quite lazy, and I tend to prioritize comfort and security over speed. Chapters: 0:00 How well does the Nauticat sail? 0:43 Traditional long keel boats 1:08 Semi long keel boats 1:48 Compared with a modern feen keeled sailboat 2:13 What is the best keel? 2:43 Semi long keel with a skeg 2:42 Range of Nauticat motorsailers 4:27 Summery of Nauticat 38 6:40 How is the Nauticat for a liveaboard? 7:09 Disadvantages of a Nauticat 8:15 Sum up and good bye

What can you expect from this channel about sailing? This channel is all about boats. Mainly sailboats. But its also about the humans using the boats. Its about interesting people telling you about interesting boats. Get the story behind the boats, and listen to their hands on experience. This channel is also about different solutions to to different problems. How to get a new teak deck on your old boat. How to avoid diesel bugs in your fuel. How to use the self tacking jib in combination with a genua. My name is Charlie, and I am born and raised in boats. My father was an engineer on a submarine in the Norwegian navy, so I started life under water. Then I grew up in small motorboats along the Norwegian and Swedish coasts. The year I turned 30 I sailed my own 32 foot sailboat from Norway, cross the Atlantic, and spend a season in the Caribbean before I sailed back. I wrote a book about that trip, and I wrote articles for several sailing magazines. I’ve had a lot of different boats during the years. Its mainly been old Swedish sailboats from the 80-ies. I dont know how many hours of my life I have spend repairing and fixing old boats! Now I have a Nauticat 38 for 1982, together with my fiancé Maria. We both love boats and sailing. In this channel we want to inspire you. We want to inspire you to use you boat, and to we want to inspire you to sail further than you have planned. All my life I have told people: Go small. Go simple. Go now! Because, as you might know, If you don’t go when you wanna go, when you do go, you’ll find you’ve gone. * The quote "If you dont go ..." is taken from Burt Monroe. I recommend you to watch the film The World's Fastest Indian. That is a 2005 film that tells the life story of New Zealander Burt Munro, who spent years re-building a 1920 Indian motorcycle — a bike which helped him set the land-speed world record at Utah's Bonneville Salt Flats in 1967. Even though this film is about motorcycles, the story behind it is universal, and is equally suitable as a description of sailing. We want to inspire dreamers and doers to sail further. Life is not about sailing fast. Life is about sailing far. And by the way: Get out of Youtube. Go small. Go simple. Go now! This channel dives into the world of boats and the people who use them, sharing stories about boat life and boating tips. The host is embarking on a single handed journey across the ocean. Join us as we document this amazing sailing voyage and more!

What to think about when you consider a new teak deck to your old sailboat? This 1982 Nauticat 38 is built bullet proof and very strong. We love the boat, but the teak deck is getting old and worn out. In this video you will learn about what we have considered before ordering a new deck. We have looked at real teak, and we have looked at modern composite materials. We hav considered to do it ourself, and we have checked prices for doing it professionally. We ended up choosing the small Swedish company VakuumTeak i Väst to do the job for us, see their website below. This video is recorded while sailing the Nauticat 38 motorsailer from Norway to the yard in Sweden. The trip was made singlehanded, and I was sailing day and night. I even got to see the northern light while sailing. Here you can read about the company doing the new deck on our Nauticat 38 from 1982: https://www.vakuumteak.se/ Here you can read about the new material used instead of real teak: https://www.m-ecodeck.com/ https://www.m-ecodeck.com/our-product/ Here you can read about the new Nauticat yard. They can build a new boat to you, and they can also refurbish your old teak deck: https://nauticat.com/ https://nauticat.com/for_nauticat_owners#aslide1

This looks like the Norwegian flag, but there are some Swedish colors in it. Why? Who is (was?) using this flag, and why is the sailing yacht Maja still using it? Get a short explanation about this mix of Norwegian and Swedish flag, also called "Sildesalaten". Here is some history about the flag, taken from Wikipedia september 1st 2024: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_mark_of_Norway_and_Sweden The union mark of Norway and Sweden was a symbol of the Union between Sweden and Norway. It was inserted into the canton of the Swedish and Norwegian national flags from 1844 to denote the partnership of the two countries in a personal union. The mark combined the flag colours of both kingdoms, equally distributed, to reflect their equal status within the union. The stand-alone design of the mark was used for the diplomatic flag and the naval jack of the union. The union mark remained part of the flags of both countries until it was removed from the merchant and state flags of Norway in 1899 because of increasing Norwegian dissatisfaction with the union. It remained on the naval ensign of Norway and all Swedish flags until the dissolution of the union between Norway and Sweden in 1905. Background The Union of Sweden and Norway came about as a result of the Napoleonic Wars, when the king of Denmark–Norway, on the losing side, was forced to cede Norway to the king of Sweden by the Treaty of Kiel in 1814. Norwegian resistance led to the declaration of national independence and the adoption of a constitution on 17 May 1814. A brief war with Sweden resulted in the Convention of Moss on 14 August 1814 and the Norwegian constitutional revision of 4 November 1814 to open the way for a personal union. On the same day, the Norwegian parliament chose to elect Charles XIII of Sweden as King of Norway. According to the constitution of November 1814, Norway was to have its own merchant flag, but the war flag was to reflect the union. The present flag of Norway was introduced in 1821, but its use was restricted. The union war flag of 1815 was a Swedish flag defaced with a canton showing a white saltire on red, meant to represent Norway. Public opinion in Norway saw this situation as unsatisfactory, and demanded a reform of flags and arms to reflect the equal status of the two states within the union. Here is some history about the union taken from Wikipedia september 1st 2024: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_between_Sweden_and_Norway Sweden and Norway or Sweden–Norway, officially the United Kingdoms of Sweden and Norway, and known as the United Kingdoms, was a personal union of the separate kingdoms of Sweden and Norway under a common monarch and common foreign policy that lasted from 1814 until its peaceful dissolution in 1905. The two states kept separate constitutions, laws, legislatures, administrations, state churches, armed forces, and currencies; the kings mostly resided in Stockholm, where foreign diplomatic representations were located. The Norwegian government was presided over by viceroys: Swedes until 1829, Norwegians until 1856. That office was later vacant and then abolished in 1873. Foreign policy was conducted through the Swedish foreign ministry until the dissolution of the union in 1905. Norway had been in a closer union with Denmark, but Denmark–Norway's alliance with Napoleonic France caused the United Kingdom and Russia to consent to Sweden's annexation of the realm as compensation for the loss of Finland in 1809 and as a reward for joining the alliance against Napoleon. By the 1814 Treaty of Kiel, the King of Denmark-Norway was forced to cede Norway to the King of Sweden, but Norway refused to submit to the treaty provisions, declared independence, and convoked a constituent assembly at Eidsvoll in early 1814. After the adoption of the new Constitution of Norway on 17 May 1814, Prince Christian Frederick was elected king. The ensuing Swedish–Norwegian War (1814) and the Convention of Moss compelled Christian Frederick to abdicate after calling an extraordinary session of the Norwegian Parliament, the Storting, to revise the Constitution in order to allow for a personal union with Sweden. On 4 November the Storting elected Sweden's king, Charles XIII, as the King of Norway, thereby confirming the union. Continuing differences between the two realms led to a failed attempt to create a separate Norwegian consular service and then, on 7 June 1905, to a unilateral declaration of independence by the Storting. Sweden accepted the union's dissolution on 26 October. After a plebiscite confirming the election of Prince Carl of Denmark as the new king of Norway, he accepted the Storting's offer of the throne on 18 November and took the regnal name of Haakon VII.

How do they build Hallberg-Rassy yachts? Join us on a quick factory tour in Sweden to see how Hallberg-Rassy yachts are made. The video gives a quick view of boat building, engines, and wooden decks. See how the marine industry is thriving in Sweden! How do Hallberg-Rassy build their fantastic sailboats? Join us on a factory tour around the Hallberg-Rassy yard on their Open Yard event august 2024. Look how they manufacture yachts like the Hallberg-Rassy 340, 400, 40C and 57. Hallberg-Rassy is a high end sailboat manufacturer located at the island Orust on the west coast of Sweden. This island has been the birth place for a lot of great yachts. Malö (Malo), Najad, CR Yachts, NordWest, Arcona. In this video you will see how they build the Hallberg Rassy yachts. They have a modern production facility. The boats are expensive, but if you can afford one you will get the state of the art dream yacht, that is capable of long distance cruising. The yard has a long history,. The yard is family owned, and family operated. The yard is without debt. They produce yachts from 43 foot to 69 foot, and have delivered 9400 yachts so far. All of them are delivered on time. Hallberg-Rassy is the number one brand most sailors dream of. A Hallberg-Rassy is your dream yacht within reach. Hallberg-Rassy, built in Sweden, has always meant good comfort combined with easy handling. Every year the Hallberg-Rassy yard is open to the public for one week end in august. This is called the Open Yard week end (Öppet varv). They the yard and the surrounding area is crowded by people, customers, suppliers and employees. The atmosphere is always good. This video is recorded at the 2024 Open yard event. For followers of this channel, that has read so far in the description, you will notice that we have also visited the small supplier Vakuumteak i Väst. (Vacuum teak in the West). This is a small business that has specialized in giving old yachts a new life. The owner is a former Hallberg-Rassy employee, and he is now running a small business where he is taking off the old teak deck, and puts a new teak deck on. This is an expensive job, but it can give your beloved yacht a new life for the next 40 years. It is still more affordable than buying a brand new Hallberg-Rassy 57.. The reason for saying this is that this company will put a new teak deck on our old 1982 Nauticat 38 this coming winter. We will of course make videos on how this is done, and you will be able to see the whole process. This series of videos will come during the winter and spring og 2024 - 2025. Subscribe to follow this project. That will be interesting. Take a quick tour of a Swedish boat yard and see exactly how its made! Witness the process of yacht building and boat building in sweden. These luxury boats are impressive! @Hallberg-Rassy
