After a devastating reality check, we hoist the anchor and continue south. Mistakes were quickly forgotten as nature is in full attendance and provides an experience that is one for the record books. In this episode we make 2 overnighters as we head out of Santa Cruz and head for Santa Barbara.

I tried out something slightly different with this episode... I just used voiceovers throughout the video instead of filming myself talking about what happened and adding footage over the top of that. I'm not anywhere near as happy with the outcome and will definitely be sticking to how I'd been putting the vlogs together previously in the future. I feel like parts of the video are a lot less smooth and more messy because I ended up not cutting clips down as much in order to fit the voiceovers in. I decided that I'd post the video anyway to see if anyone would notice the difference or mention the video being worse than the others... Finally, 25 months after splashing Saoirse, we had to haul out. We had left it longer than we should have but we wanted to haul out when we got closer to actually doing our crossing. That day is finally in sight- we have set December / January as a departure date and the haul out has been our first big step towards that plan, suddenly making it very real. We knew the bottom had areas that were REALLY bad - with a huge amount of mussel, red bait, sponges, barnacles and live stock living on four specific areas, bow and stern of each hull. Before we initially launched Saoirse, we had given the hulls 4 good coats of anti-foul but at that stage we were still sitting in cradles. The day we lifted her to be transported back to the ocean was raining. We gave the cradle areas a good coat of anti-foul as she was lifted onto the truck by the crane (link to that scary episode below) and again at her launch site right before splashing - and it really showed. These were the areas that had all the growth. With the anti-foul being self polishing, and the very small amount of sailing that we've done because we've constantly been working, we had an entire eco-system growing in these areas. We also had a large adjustment to make regarding the waterline. Our initial waterline had been grossly misjudged and after launching and adding the weight of the mast, sails and filling all tanks, our anti-foul waterline plunged about 100mm below the water. It was somewhat of a disaster as from then on, we had severe growth around each hull that was hard to control in the rich waters of the West coast. So when hauled, it was a huge job to clean up the scum line. We ultimately raised the waterline by 200mm and it's made a huge difference. We also picked up a potential problem with one of our propellers- bush problem again - see below for a link to a previous episode that covered a similar issue with the other prop - so we are in the process of having that repaired and are testing out a second hand prop in the meantime - figuring out a set of spares to take with us. It's surprising how often we hear of yachts loosing propellers so we need to have at least one spare. The haul out was hair raising!! Watching your home being pulled out and released back into the water on a travel lift is a scary experience. To see around 10 tons of yacht being supported on a moving object that just looks too small to support it takes a lot of faith, but it all went very smoothly and we are so chuffed to be back in the water and on our initial test sail we could feel and see the difference in Saoirse. There is no holding her back now and we are all excited to start planning our crossing and future adventures. In this video we set sail and do an overnight passage from Raiatea to Mo'orea. Upon arrival we do some SCUBA dives where we hunt for lemon sharks, and we find lots of turtles, fishies, eels, and more. Kevin demonstrates some fin kicking techniques for turns and backing up. We hike up part of Mount Rotui and get some great views over the lagoon and surrounding areas. Kevin gets a boat haircut. We dig in to the batteries and do some other boat work. We spot some whales as we transit from Mo'orea back to Tahiti, where we go to meet Rob who is coming back on a flight. Rob arrives and we start preparing for our voyage to Fiji. Thanks for following! Alle 21.46 UTC (23.46 ora italiana) di domenica 24 ottobre, Maserati Multi 70 ha tagliato il traguardo della 42a edizione della Rolex Middle Sea Race al largo della Valletta, dopo 1 giorno, 12 ore, 36 minuti e 7 secondi dalla partenza. Giovanni Soldini e il suo equipaggio arrivano al secondo posto in tempo reale: il loro diretto concorrente americano Argo, con skipper Jason Carroll, ha tagliato la linea d’arrivo alle 18.39 UTC (20.39 ora italiana), fissando un nuovo record per la regata, di 1 giorno, 9 ore, 29 minuti e 28 secondi. Con un grandissimo lavoro da parte di tutto l’equipaggio, utilizzando pulegge e cime siamo riusciti a togliere le vele, raddrizzare l’albero e fissarlo con un sistema provvisorio. Since all the boat shows were closed during the pandemic we ended up watching a lot of videos to decide on which boat to buy. One of the boats we kept coming back to was the Amel 50. Here at the 2021 Annapolis Sailboat Show we get a chance to see one for the first time. The unique features I really like are the solid railing around the deck, water tight engine room containing all the ships mechanicals, protected helm with hard top and glass windscreen and water tight doors below. Unfortunately at 3 times our budget it is not possible without some unforeseen windfall.

After a wonderful summer sailing around Canada on our catamaran we take the first weather window to sail Southward. We do a three night passage to Newport, Rhode Island where we spend a few days enjoying autumn and touring the mansions. We continue down Long Island Sound and prepare to visit New York City. En chockad men glad Mike fick ta emot årets ungdomsledarstipendie ⭐🎉 🏑Mike är en riktig eldsjäl och förebild som har varit ledare i Tvååkers IBK i över 35 år. Han ställer alltid upp och hjälper till där han behövs. 😀 Tre ord som återkommer från alla vi frågar är att Mike är snäll, positiv och glad. Han har en förmåga att sprida en positiv stämning till alla runt omkring sig. 🧡 Mike är en fantastisk människa som betyder mycket för alla i klubben.
