We have upgraded our power system!! 👏 and are so happy with the results. After a winter of battling to get enough power into the batteries each day, even with out nearly 1400kW solar system, we came to the conclusion that we needed new batteries. Then came the dilemma of "do we replace our batteries with new lead acid or splurge and go with lithium"? After months of not wanting to face the cost implications, we decided that we should bite the bullet and go with lithium ion. We also decided to add Sterling Alternator - to battery chargers so that if we had to start our engines to charge the batteries, it would all happen very quickly, whilst also protecting the alternator and batteries. Getting the old 56kg each, lead acid batteries out of their cubbies, was a job but replacing them with the new 28kg LifePo4 batteries was such a pleasure. It took a couple of days for Chris - our go-to guy - to carry out the installation and change over all the settings in the system to accommodate the Lithium Iron batteries, but its been so worth it in the end!! We have gone from a little over 400 Ah lead acid setup - with only 200Ah usable power - to 440Ah lithium setup with usable power of just under 400Ah - effectively doubling our usable energy. The new Blue Nova batteries have their own integrated battery management system and with careful use and monitoring, with an 50% depth of discharge, we expect to get at least 5000 cycles out of the batteries - which equates to over 10 years of use!! Our next worry was whether the +/-1400kW solar system would cope with filling the batteries. We needn't have worried. After a few weeks of figuring out the settings on our MPPT controllers, borrowing a Victron dongle from our friend Ernie - (thanks Ernie😉) we managed to customise our controller settings and now we have full batteries everyday by around 11am!! We still cant believe how fast these lithium batteries charge in the right conditions. We even have great power going in on an average cloudy day - so all in all we are ecstatic at how it has changed our lives when it comes to power - which everyone that lives on a boat knows, is a huge part of your life. We have even bought ourselves an induction cooker - so now we even get a lot of the cooking done everyday, using solar energy which means we get to save on costly gas 😜. We also get to deal with South African Dept of Home Affairs, when Robin, Teagan and Colben go to renew their passports. Denver's is practically brand new and I will be traveling on my British passport but the others only have a couple of years left on their current passports, so we decided it would be best to renew them whilst still in the country, rather than through foreign consulates later on. We were expecting the worst, after being told during a phone call to the department in Malmesbury, that we should try to get into the que by 4am to ensure getting the applications done before their daily 4pm close We were really surprised when we got there, the que was way shorter than expected and we were through by mid-morning. Almost unheard of!! We made a spur of the moment, surprise visit to great friends in Jeffreys Bay, it was a special time but heartbreaking to say goodbye as we are now really into the final countdown to our leaving South Africa in a little over a months time. In this episode, we're awoken in the middle of the night when the ice floe breaks apart, sending ice surging into our boat, crushing up against our hull. Exhaust fumes seep into the boat, creating carbon monoxide risks. And we build a skating rink on the lake and play some hockey, just steps from our boat.

Camelot was another great island - bigger and more to explore, with paths less well-marked (which made it more fun for Chloe than me, honestly!) While walking around we saw that friends of ours from the marina were staying at a mooring ball on the south side of the island. That looks like fun - but with Chloe, we'd definitely need to bring our tender to get her to shore to have her potty breaks. Around noon, we thought it was time to leave. The weather was perfect and it was tough to say goodbye, but rain and wind was expected the next day, and I really didn't want to dock at the marina in those conditions. So, off we went. A straight shot up the Canadian Middle Channel, then north to The Landing at Ivy Lea. Easy run, maybe 30-40 minutes. We talked a lot about the trip - what went well, and what needed improvement - but we agreed that with each day, we got better and better at docking, communicating, and handling the boat. That's a big deal. Overcoming challenges together is one of the reasons we bought Aqualibrium in the first place! I think a "Cruise in Review" video is in order to really outline the highs and lows of the trip, and things we'll do differently next year, because there will be a 2022 cruise! And so, back at the marina, where we woke up to a cold, rainy, and windy morning....it always pays to look at the weather forecasts, because we came back at the right time. What an awesome cruise!

Another Chat 18 video, taken last week on a very cold winters day. Although I can, in theory, sail anytime (my accountant classes it as "research and development") in practice I need a reasonable wind and for the tide to be in, as my Chat is kept on a drying, tidal mooring. Unfortunately spring tides, which would allow me to sail for longest, are morning and evenings here in Plymouth. Short days really inhibit my Chat sailing, especially as I am also regularly dinghy racing at weekends. So the weather being cold was the least of my concerns. And I am not too worried about the seagull droppings, nor the build up of bottom growth (the hulls haven't been scrubbed since launching in April). So apologies for the obvious dirt! Chat is moored near the mouth of the River Tamar. On the Plymouth, Devon, shore is the naval dockyard of Devonport - the largest in Europe. While, as a complete contrast, the other shore is Cornwall and has gentle hills with fields leading down to the water. That is, except for HMS Raleigh, which is the UK's basic naval training college, complete with rifle and small arms range right on the water. They don't use it everyday, but I heard live firing as I headed up the creek. Since these are raw recruits I always worry where the bullets actually go, so sadly I had to turn back. The gunnery range has been there for hundreds of years. At low tide you can walk round the edge of the creek and still find cannon balls that were fired in practice 200 years ago. A good sail even so! And I got back to the mooring in front of our house just before dark. Panic, stress, fear.. In this episode James and Philippa anchor in Moorhead city, the weather turns extremely windy and thunderstorms are forecast for the night. As the wind gets worse the yacht behind us gets pushed up against the seabed and pulls anchor. I (Philippa) watch in horror as James had left with the dinghy to shore. I feel helpless as I cannot do anything to help. I also worry for Aequus. We leave Moorhead city to settle in for the night before leaving around the headland to face Hatteras which neither of us are looking forward to after hearing many a bad story of Hatteras. As we safely and gladly arrive in Norfolk we are amazed at the Naval base and how enormous it is. We arrive in Norfolk to seawater very different from the Bahamas lol! We take a tourist trip around the city of Norfolk and check out the famous Naval Museum and Battle ship Wisconsin, we meet two incredibly charming veterans who made our day!! We look around the rest of the museum and find some very interesting pieces indeed!!! Points of chat are potty talk, and we decide Aequus would look great with some gold leaf anew!!
