The Oceanis 38.1’s chined hull offers particularly surprising cruising comfort. Good and taut to aft and low on the water, the rigidity under sail of this cruiser takes her further and faster, with exceptional stability. It is a joy to have two helm stations, a mainsail arch and a huge swim platform on a sailing yacht this size. Underway, she is nimble and fast, easy to sail shorthanded but with a large enough cockpit to accomodate bigger crews. For the Italian design team, the challenge was to multiply the living spaces in the salon and offer greater privacy in the owner cabin, while maintaining the visual perspective offered in previous versions. The new L-shaped galley optimizes seating space in the salon, allowing up to eight people to sit around the table. In February 2022, we had Intention hauled out for two weeks to take care of several jobs. Probably the most time consuming of those jobs was painting the hull below the waterline with several coats of new antifoul - a special paint that inhibits marine growth. This antifoul would help Intention slip through the water more easily, making us feel lie we are better sailors than we probably are. This is NOT intended to be a full tutorial on how to prepare your boat and apply antifouling. It is an overview of the process that we followed and it likely has enough detail to give you a good idea of what might be involved. We STRONGLY recommend that you check out the website for whatever product you intend to apply to your boat. Whatever product you choose should have clear and detailed instructions and ample support for any questions that you might have. If it doesn't, choose a different product. Antifoul is not cheap. The MicronCSC that we applied cost about $350 (Canadian) per gallon, and we applied 3 gallons to Intention's hull. That cost almost as much as the haulout and boatyard storage for two weeks, but it's a cost we should only have to pay every few years. In our opinion, it's worth it to pay for a quality antifoul product - as we were doing the hull, several other owners stopped by to talk (if you've ever been to a boatyard, you understand what this is like) and the stories of rampant growth or short-lived antifoul applications with off-brand products were common. The amount of labour involved in doing this job is significant; do you REALLY want to scrimp on the product you're applying, and then have to do it AGAIN in a year (or less)? By the way, that thumbnail picture for this episode was taken by Donna when I got home from hand-sanding Intention the first day, and yes, I really DID look that bad! I wore an N95 mask and clothes that I REALLY didn't care about, but my goodness, the dust from that old antifoul got EVERYWHERE. I don't think I've ever been as happy to shower at the end of a day! Many thanks to Dallas, one of the instructors at Starlight Sailing Adventures (https://starlightsailing.com). Not only did he help a LOT with the hours of work sanding and painting the hull, he showed what a good instructor he is by patiently and clearly educating me about the tasks involved in applying antifoul. If you're looking for a good instructor, contact him or Gord at Starlight - I'm confident they will be a good fit for your sailing needs! The Youtube algorithm is a fickle and hungry beast, so Like, Comment, and Subscribe to the channel if you are new. If you have any more detailed questions about our antifoul application, please feel free to put a comment down below. As always, feel free to make any suggestions about topics for future videos you would like to see. Our intent for this channel is to share our experiences with you, so the better we understand what you want to see, the better we will be able to provide for it. Next time, we *try* to splash (or launch) the boat, only to have bad weather blow... *erm* - throw a monkey wrench into the works!

Cyclone survival We've spent the last 2 years on the hard stand in Fiji, refitting our ex Vendée Globe race boat, and hoped to be out of here before cyclone season started, but we weren't ready in time and instead found our selves engineless with a broken gearbox, as two nasty low pressure systems headed our way. To stay in a cyclone zone in a cyclone season, you ideally want to have a backup plan incase a cyclone alert occurs. The most common solution for boats that are still here in cyclone season, is either to go in a cyclone pit in Vuda Marina, which is a hole in the ground for your keel to go in, so that your hull is on tyres at ground level. Or they go up the river and tie to mangroves. Unfortunately due to our nearly 5metre draft, neither of these options are available to us, as it's not possible to dig a cyclone pit deep enough for us as for our hull to be at ground level, the pit would be below the water level and so it would just fill with water and the edges would start to collapse, and we're too deep to go up the river. For the 2 years that we were on the hard stand here during cyclone season, our cyclone solution combined custom built cradles to sit the bow and stern of the boat in. Check out the videos about how we made these cradles here Stern cradle: https://youtu.be/cWvcQ3LOtk4 Bow cradle: https://youtu.be/SrF9IHHaHxg Plus we dug a mini cyclone pit for our keel. This was in no way deep enough for our hull to be at ground level, but it lowered us enough for us to be able to sit our aft cradle on a shipping container which we then strapped the boat to for stability. Finally we buried concrete blocks under the ground all around us to strap everything down to with cyclone straps. You can watch the full details of our cyclone prep here: https://youtu.be/G7vOneZN26c Now we're back in the water, our backup plan, if there's a cyclone alert, is to go to Suva, which is 100nm to the east, where there's a protected bay with cyclone moorings in deep water. However since our gearbox broke, this solution isn't so straight forward. We'd been monitoring these two systems constantly across many different models, and despite them both becoming named cyclones, the first Judy and the second Kevin, they were headed far enough away to not be an issue for us, so we decided to stay put.... until one night when the cyclone track for cyclone Kevin changed... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you enjoyed this video please consider supporting us on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/SailingNV or with a one-off donation via https://ko-fi.com/sailingnv or paypal https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/sailingnv ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks SO MUCH TO Olivia @wildernessofwaves for the clips of NV on the mooring and the lovely video of Don rowing in the sunshine and Kurt Roll @bulaKurt for the awesome drone shots of the boats up the river before a previous cyclone here in Fiji. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Caio! We are Timo and Jo, an Italian and English couple with countless ocean miles under our belts. We're refitting an ex Vendée Globe Open 60 race boat originally designed & built & raced by famous Hungarian sailor Nándor Fa. He competed in her in the 1992 Vendée Globe (round the world single handed race known as “the Everest of the seas”), finishing 5th, becoming the first non-frenchman to finish. We are currently in Fiji giving this old gladiator a new lease on life, transforming her from an ex race boat to a performance family cruiser, which we'll need to make both dog and baby proof! We’re planning to set sail again in Oct 2022, so with limited time&money we have plenty of challenges ahead to turn our dreams into reality&get back on the water! Subscribe to our channel&track our progress as we release videos about our journey as well as "how to" videos about anything boat related. Never stop to dream, never stop to sail! Yachting and Sailing Cruisers should watch this video because it would allow them to create autopilot income once it is set it up. Easier than creating a Patreon following and no need to invest in expensive equipment and spend hours editing and creating. A Jim Antrim designed 40 foot offshore race boat that is being built on location at the Berkeley Marine Center in Berkeley California. In this episode the team checks in on the sails being built at Pineapple Sails in Alameda California. This is the last set of sails to roll out of the loft as Kame and Sally are retiring after several decades of being the Bay Area go to sail loft for high quality racing and cruising sails. The episode ends with finally launching the boat in between rain storms. Next episode will be some highlights from the first sail, spoiler alert, the boat is fast!

** NOW SOLD ** Built in France in 2002, 'Biggles' is a very well specified Beneteau First 40.7. Now with her third owner, the original brief for this yacht was fast, safe and easy sailing, with comfort front of mind. Specified with an electric anchor windlass, autopilot and a unique Casamare teak folding cockpit table, and recently upgraded with a Bimini and Dodger, she is a very complete cruiser racer. Her sail wardrobe includes an Ullman composite main, Ullman J1 and J3 headsails, both furlable and an A1 Spinnaker in a sock with snuffer. Below deck she is beautifully finished with the darker Cherrywood timber and navy trimmed settees and berth cushions. There is a very good electronics package including Raymarine GPS / Plotter, Raymarine wind, speed and depth and a Raymarine Autopilot. Biggles is a must see for anyone looking for that unique balance and ability to race one day and cruise the next.

The racing never stops - real life onboard with Will! At the moment we have very good weather conditions for our boat, with 20 knots of wind and wavy sea state, we are doing 20 - 25 knots of boat speed gaining some miles on Holcim which is 100 miles ahead of us. We have the other 2 boats less than 50 miles behind us, so we need to keep pushing. Yesterday we noticed an issue with the port side foil ram and had to spend 8 hours repairing it, but we are glad we managed to fix it and can carry on sailing fast! We're not gonna lie, we are NOT experienced sailors... and constant 30-35 knot winds entering the Chesapeake was too much for us to handle that day! After enjoying a few days of beautiful weather in Solomon Island, we decided to get a move on to Deltaville, VA. We checked all the weather apps before deciding to head out that morning, but we quickly realized that the predictions were WRONG! We did manage to get better weather the next day and we sailed to a nice quiet anchorage just off of Point Lookout in Scotland, MD for the night. That was enough, I lost all trust in the running rigging and for the first time ever we turned back. Back to Eden to order lots of expensive ropes to replace the entire running rigging on Trade Runner. You win some, you lose some, we mainly just lost. Better to turn back than have big troubles further on though. ⚓️Join our CREW⚓️ If you enjoy our videos and appreciate the effort that goes into making them then perhaps you would be interested in supporting their production. Leeway is the drift motion to leeward as a boat sails. To reduce leeway, sailing vessels use a keel, centerboard, daggerboard or leeboard to create "lateral resistance." Understanding the concept and effects of leeway are important when a sailor wants to make progress upwind (aka: "beating" into the wind). On a fixed keel boat, maximizing forward drive (ie: excellent sail trim) and minimizing the wind's lateral (heeling) force will help you progress to windward. #Sailing #SailingConcepts #SailHowTo

A year ago we were driving cross country in our truck camper rig exploring the land based side of things this country has to offer. Of you told us then what we would be doing now we would not have believed you. However, with more delays to our catamaran build a lot quickly transpired leading to exactly where we are today and we couldn't be happier. Canada by trawler has been absolutely incredible and we've only just scratched the surface. Can our 30-YEAR-OLD Privilege Catamaran handle a 9-DAY OCEAN PASSAGE?! The BIGGER question - CAN WE?! SEA SICKNESS, things BREAKING, and our FORECAST is WINDIER and WAVIER than we'd like. But there's NO SIGN of it improving in the near future. And with the Christmas holiday with family on the line and a dock waiting for us in SC, we make the decision to shove off. We have 1400 miles and 8 - 10 days of sailing ahead of us and very little idea of exactly what we'll get...time to go! Enjoy!! And be sure to SUBSCRIBE for WEEKLY CONTENT EVERY SUNDAY! Cheers!! This decision hasn’t come easily. We have been going back and forth, trying to find, work out, work through and plan any alternative options but we have settled on this. Watch our video for more details. This isn’t the end of our videos just yet, we have still got lots of footage of places we’ve visited and we’ve still got places we are going to visit. We would like to thank all of you guys for the support over the years, our dream has been cut short but as one door closes another opens.
