That evening we shared one final night onboard the catamaran, cooking dinner, watching the sunset, and reflecting on an unforgettable trip before returning the boat to the charter base. We document the challenging process of dropping and removing the keel from the rest of the boat, and Alan explains exactly what a keel is, why it’s so critical to a vessel’s structure, and what happens when it fails. The new keel must be perfectly sized to fit the boat, and even small errors could cause major problems. The 12th edition of the RORC Transatlantic Race got underway in near-perfect conditions off Marina Lanzarote, as the international fleet raced into the Atlantic framed by Lanzarote’s dramatic volcanic coastline. With the water maker install complete and jobs out of the way, it is time to kick back and enjoy ourselves. We have three other buddy boats anchored with us and we swim, the kids jump off the boat for the first time and venture into old town again and see more charm than what we initially did. Much to the family's dissapointment I am making them do the 'Ladder of Kotor' - a 2hr return hike, with an elevation of approx 250m and is roughly 4km long, or 1,400 steps high. The views were incredible and everybody enjoyed doing it, and very miuch looking forward to a swim after. We stock up on some fresh food then move on to a quieter anchorage. For Alexia Barrier's team on The Famous Project and Thomas Coville's crew aboard Sodebo 3, charging through the Southern Ocean and past the three great Capes has been a stressful and emotional experience. And while both have succeeded in running the gauntlet to head back into the South Atlantic, both teams know that even though their bows are pointing at the finish, they are still a long way off sealing the deal. Whatever happens next, their trips since crossing the start line in Ushant have been outstanding to follow. It is defined by judgment, situational awareness, and responsibility toward others at sea. In this analysis, we break seamanship down into three fundamental principles: 1.Does the action help the skipper without putting others at risk? 2.Does it improve or obstruct the flow and safety of the surrounding environment? 3.Would the same action be acceptable if it were done to us? Using real footage from a Greek marina, we examine how individual decisions can escalate risk for everyone, especially in confined spaces and adverse wind conditions.
