It's time to face our biggest fear since we got this boat nearly two years ago. Our engine has not been touched since 2006...will it start for us when we try? Matt goes through a full explanation of how he prepped our Yanmar 4JH4E engine before our attempted start. There were a lot of things on that list, and a bit of annoying beeping from the pre-start in the background, so I've included captions in a few areas to make it easier to understand. The next item to tick off our list is getting our cockpit ready to paint. Although we did 90% of the deck last year, we needed to wait on the cockpit due to all the chaos of things stored in there. Bringing it down to bare metal, we work it back up through an aluminum primer, barrier coat, and paint primer before we come to a halt on the painting process. Cheers from the work yard! You may have already seen our boats.com video on How to Change Lower Unit Oil on a Boat, and today we're at Norfolk Marine to see how you change the engine oil. Let's get started. Chris Breeden, Service Manager and Yamaha Master Tech: Okay, we've got the top off and we're in the shop, we made sure we got the engine is up to operating temperature so we can get all the oil out of it. Next step, we're going to remove the dip-stick, set it aside, grab the tube (of the oil pump)... Lenny: Hey, was a minute Chris, why don't you just use the drain down here instead of using an extraction pump? Chris: Well, you can use the drain, but the main thing is it's very messy, and if you're doing service over the water it's just not an option, you have to take it out through the dipstick so you don't make a mess. Lenny: Good point. Chris: Now you just pump it until the oil's out. Now, we'll put a rag under the filter to try and keep the mess down, take your filter pliers, break the filter loose, and remove it. Chris: Okay, now you want to put a little oil or grease on the new O-ring, and spin the filter on hand-tight. The final step is going to be filling the motor with oil and checking the level. We have the oil changed and checked it and it's at the proper level, now we're ready to roll. Lenny: Hey, let me ask you something. An oil change is not an incredibly complex procedure, but if you mess it up, you pay big time, don't you? Chris: Yes, the consequences are pretty severe. Lenny: So how does someone know if they should try this job or not? Chris: Well, if they have a mechanical background and it's something they feel comfortable with, and they've done it on other things, they probably would be OK. Lenny: Otherwise, we hope you take it in.

The key objectives were to repair the collision damage on the bow, gunwale, keel and rudder, new anti-fowl and lots of other jobs on the list. Not all goes to plan but we do complete the following: - Repair to gel coat and teak gunwale - Repair to the keel and rudder - Polishing and applying Ceramic Pro to the hull and topsides - Servicing the Side Power bow thruster inside and out - Servicing the 26” folding Gori propeller - Re newing the Cutlass bearing - Adjusting the stern gland - Servicing various raw water fittings in the engine room - Fixing leaks under the water heater - Servicing the genoa and cutter hydraulic Furlex’, upper and lower units - Improving and servicing the Selden goose-neck and the boom and mast vang fittings - Rig inspection and repair to cutter halyard - Making chocks for the R134 gas bottle - Adjusting rudder height (dropping 2 mm) - Repairing cockpit tent from when it got wound into a winch - Fitting new speakers in the saloon - Buying bottom paints supplies for Antigua - Removing rusty anchor chain links - Repairing VHF and SSB antennas - Finding and solving the elusive fresh water leak into the bilge - Filling and fitting new composite gas bottles - Doing battle with birds and their poo! - Testing new drone 15 Oct - 6 Nov 2018

I go diving and discover lobster everywhere... so many in fact that there were not enough proper hiding spots. I even got charged by one, classic! I feed another moray eel and boy is she hungry taking 3 bloody fish. After that I shoot a trunkfish... oh no! These are the crazy looking triangle fish but the cubans tell me that they are great taste like chicken so I try it out and let you know. Margarida has seen enough and is keen to get to Cayo Largo to pick up her parents so we visit the well and fill up our tanks and all our gerry cans. Its interesting to note that even though we were not strict on out water consumption knowing there was a well available we still only used 4.5 litres per person per ay (about 1.2 gallons). And yes we are again having dinner with our Cuban friends and it is going to be a feast with conch, lobster, fish and hutia the rat like rodent again... wooo hoooo. Good buy to our Cuban friends!
