Lightning storms are one of a sailors worst fears. On a night sail from Italy to Croatia we get caught in the middle of a monster storm. For forty minutes we were stuck in the eye of the storm with lightning strikes all around. The timing was bad. We were approaching land, and the raging storm to the South and West of us meant we had no choice but to navigate a narrow channel with close to zero visibility. Limping into Dubrovnik we managed to check in, sailing on to enjoy the stunning Croatian coast. BoatUS Magazine associate editor Mark Corke teaches you step-by-step how to splice rope around a thimble. The thimble splice is handy for connecting a 3 strand rope to anchor chain on your boat. Mark breaks down the process into a simple format that uses 3 strand nylon line, electrical tape, waxed whipping twine, scissors, and a marlin spike or fid (if needed). He walks you through the process of adding whipping twine, preparing the end, and weaving the ends of the rope through the line to secure it. Once you know how to add an eye splice with thimble, you'll also be able to do other splices using three-strand line. It's a really odd feeling when you leave your dock knowing your boat will not return unless you sail all the way around the world to get there. It's a combination of very exciting and scary at the same time. It's also quite normal feeling, like we're just going for a day sail - but also quite a relief that after years of planning, the day of our departure has finally arrived. In this episode we check in on everyone's feelings and expectations. A small group of friends and family see us off the dock and we have one of our best nights ever at anchor. When I think of Brazil, the iconic image of Rio automatically pops into my mind. And I’m pretty sure it does for you too. There’s just a certain mystique about this picturesque, exotic city nestled among breathtaking beaches and mountains that surround Guanabara bay. Anchoring Delos right in the middle of this 7-million-person city was a completely surreal experience. If you asked me 10 years ago the chances that I would find myself in Rio, let alone on a sailboat here, I probably would have said next to nothing.
