We are replacing all of our appliances, and that requires a new counter! While removing the old one, we discovered just how heavy Corian is. It's are to believe anyone puts it in a catamaran. In this episode we are building a new counter from Coosa Board laminated with 1/8 inch fiberglass sheet. We're pretending we know how to be carpenters by using biscuits to join the pieces and even created drop edges. Some times it pays to break the rules. While sailing back from the Bras d’Or Lakes to Halifax, we left on Friday Aug. 22nd, the day that Hurricane Erin was going by. Sailing superstition says it’s bad luck to set off on a Friday. Also, most sailors stay in safe harbors when such a big storm is any where nearby. Yet, I didn’t break the rules idly; I watched the track of the storm and had chosen ports bailout ports. Getting home from the Bras d’Or Lakes to Halifax is normally an upwind slog because of the prevailing southwest summer breezes. The northern edges of Hurricane Erin would create a strong northeasterly that would make the trip a fast, downwind ride. This was a chance too good to pass up. I determined the risk was worth the reward. Several hours into our surfing session down the south coast of Nova Scotia, we noticed blue sky to the north over the land and angry grey clouds to the south out to sea. During the day, we jibed downwind between the shore and the meanest looking clouds. Soulmates ended up having a great, fast sail. We averaged 9 knots for the 95-mile 11-hour passage from the exit of the Bras d’Or Lakes to Beaver Island Harbor, which is nearly two thirds of the way to Halifax. The wind blew in mid-20s with some solid gusts into the 30s, but since we were on a very broad reach with a double-reefed main and small jib, heeling was minimal. Our highest speed was a surf to 20.2 knots and had uncountable number of surges over 15 knots. There were hour-long stretches where we averaged 11 knots. Being comfortable in, and prepared for, high winds allowed us take advantage of these conditions. My decision to sail bore fruit, as the day after the storm, we had to motor the remaining 60 miles to Halifax because the prevailing southwesterly had returned. Comfort and preparation are the result of years of sailing in incrementally stronger winds and learning from those experiences. All sailors would do well to expand their sailing skills as did my crewmate Keven; she started out skeptical of my plan, but was smiling at the end of the our successful sail. I broke one other superstitious rule — we sail with bananas as part of our larder.

After overnighting at the Low Isles, we continue north towards our ultimate destination for this cruising season - Lizard Island. We stop at the spectacular Mackay Reef, with its beautiful sand cay and awesome coral reefs. We then take advantage of the following breeze to press on to the lovely protected anchorage at the Hope Islands. This week aboard Moor R & R, Episode 12 we’re back in Airlie Beach to restock the boat, give her a good clean, and pick up a few essentials (including our usual stop at Bunnings, of course!). Next, we haul out at Shute Harbour for some maintenance — but it’s definitely not the kind of haul out we’re used to! The 17th edition of the RORC Caribbean 600 got underway in spectacular fashion from Fort Charlotte, high above Antigua’s Pillars of Hercules. In classic 15-knot trade winds, a fleet of 56 boats set off on the 600-mile challenge around 11 Caribbean islands. Five clean starts launched the fleet into immediate battle. In IRC Zero, Rán and Daguet 5 went head-to-head beneath the cliffs, while in Super Zero Leopard 3 and Black Jack 100 reignited their 100-footer rivalry from the gun. The multihulls wasted no time either, with Argo accelerating clear and setting the early pace. Tactical shifts, tight pin-end duels and high-speed drag races defined the opening miles — but with 600 nautical miles ahead, the real test is only just beginning. #RORCracing #Caribbean600

This is the fourth video of my new series where I show you how I splice up different lines. In this video I build up an outboard jib lead system for a J/99 using Robline Admiral Dyneema. I do a different version of a stripped cover splice and unique way how to integrate a low friction ring and spliced eye for easy soft attachment to the boat. Just a reminder, I am a trained and certified rigger, so just because you watched my video does not make your certified or trained. We show you how to remove the sliding doors on a Nauticat pilothouse motorsailer. The Nauticat motorsailers have sliding doors on both the sides. We show you how to remove them and to install them again. This is shown on a 1982 Nauticat 38, but the way to do it is the same on Nauticat 33 and Nauticat 44.
