We did not stop anywhere along Bougainville or in any of the Solomon islands south of Bougainville to avoid problems with the Solomon Islands Border Patrol who does not let anyone stop anywhere before formal entry into the country, in our case in Noro, Gizo or Taro Filmed in March & April 2025. Anchored off the south East coast of Sulawesi in a stunning, fiord like bay on the island of Labengke we explore an unspoilt, ecological paradise with mountainous coastline, clothed in thick rain forest, filled with hornbills, kingfishers and scores of other exotic bird species, lapped by crystal clear waters covering beautiful coral reefs, heart shaped bays, blue, blue lagoons, very, very few people and no tourists. But this fragile treasure lays across a thin strip of water from death and destruction reigning down on the Sulawesi mainland in the form of unfettered nickel mining, stripping the jungle of all vegetation, laying the hills bare and covered red dust or mud silting the waters with red sediment wiping out all marine life. During our overnight passage, we discovered that our navigation lights weren’t working, so we began troubleshooting to figure out whether the bulb had failed or if the wiring had corroded. After running into a bigger issue than expected, we decided to pause the project until we can get the right parts. Thankfully, we had a much more exciting reason for coming to Moorea: swimming with the humpback whales. And what a welcome distraction it was! We joined Dr. Poole for a half-day whale tour and spent hours in the water with a mother and her calf. ► Newcomers to sailing who have so far only experienced flashier, more expensive catamarans could well be forgiven for wondering why all winches aren’t electric. The convenience is undisputed – just wrap the sheet or halyard round the self-tailer and press the button. Surely this is just modern technology? How many of us have wind-up windows in our cars these days? ► The reasons are about space, simplicity (including having enough electricity to run them) and budget. On my boat for instance, there are half a dozen winches ranging in size up to a pair of 48s for the primaries. Apart from the fact that there simply isn’t room beneath the deck for electric winch motors, they’re in the order of four or five thousand euros each… putting them completely out of the question. ► But it’s not just about the convenience. As we get older, we’ve got to accept certain realities. Last year, my wife had surgery on her spine: a disk removed from her neck and the two vertebrae either side fused together. Winching wasn’t something on the surgeon’s list of recommended post-operative activities. As we sail mostly just the two of us, the boat has to be set up as if single-handing – especially for longer passages. ► And while I’d certainly heard of ewincher (it’s been around for a few years now), it wasn’t until meeting its creator Bruno Rabu at last year’s La Rochelle boat show that we’d really had a look at one. ► Rather than an electric winch, the ewincher is quite simply an electric winch handle. The same length as a traditional handle, it contains a battery and a brushless motor. The motor, with torque of 90 Nm and a speed of 110 rpm (for the ewincher 2 model), can be reversed with a button on the handle, meaning you can instantly switch speeds on a two-speed winch. The speed of the SE model is 83 rpm. Both models weigh 2.2 kg (less than 5 lbs) and are waterproof to IPX6. Powered by a 28V lithium-ion battery, they will last all day with intensive use before recharging: tested on a 40-footer, one charge allowed for hoisting the mainsail three times and then sheeting the genoa after tacking 40 times. José, um indígena guna aqui de San Blas, veio até nosso barco com uma canoa feita de um só tronco de árvore e o remo de madeira.  Ele se ofereceu para limpar o casco, como não precisávamos, ele nos perguntou se queríamos comprar lagosta para colaborar com ele, dissemos que sim, então do veleiro o vi, ele foi até os corais aqui pertinho, mergulhou, pegou algumas coisas e voltou.  Ao chegar, vimos que ele tinha um caranguejo enorme e três lagostas.  Uma parecia uma barata gigante e não nos animamos a comer essa. Haha. Ele disse que essa lagosta é boa para as mulheres comerem quando estão deprimidas.  Quando dissemos a ele que queríamos a lagosta, vimos uma alegria e motivação enormes nele, que havia conseguido um novo cliente, algo que também nos deixou felizes em ver a alegria dele.  Nos cobrou  pelas duas lagostas e o caranguejo 20 dólares, demos duas cervejas para ele e com isso nosso novo amigo  José se foi super contente. #sanblas #guna #panama #vidaabordo #mar
