I spent a good year refitting it, mostly by myself and with the help of awesome friends, and then (mostly) solo sailed my sailboat around the western Caribbean. In 2016, I crossed the Panama Canal, had a major engine break down, a near sinking experience and a serious foot injury which got me stuck along the Pacific coast of Central and South America. In this Episode, I help my friend Maria with some of the maintanance of her 72 foot steel sailboat Joana. Rust is the constant enemy of any steel boat owner, so we are chipping away on some of her chainplates and give them some fresh coats of primer and paint and we weld shut some holes that have formed from water sitting alongside the edge of a piece of wood mounted against the steel. We made a big mistake. We shouldn't have started the refit with the boat in the water, and the consequences of that mistake mean we have to move the boat missing portlights, sails, grab handles, deck hardware, etc. 70 nautical miles to an affordable boatyard. There aren't any other good, affordable, DIY liveaboard boatyards any closer to us. Once the boat is in the new yard, we can continue the full refit of Freebie, starting with the deck. The plan is to completely refit the boat for world cruising over the next year or so. Yes, we plan to sail the world on a boat we got for free. Initially this wasn't the goal, but now we realize Randi and I don't need any more boat than we have. 32' is certainly large enough and the construction of the boat is solid. At long last I have finally tried and tested my new WATERPROOF FPV (First Person View) system on our "MARINER" Waterproof Drone.. and it worked! But whatever you do, DON'T try this with your DJI Phantom or Inspire 1 quadcopters or you will very quickly see them sink like a stone! ;) What this means is now we can fly in fully waterproof mode, and simultaneously see the view from the GoPro camera on the drone with our screen on the ground, even if the GoPro is underwater! Crazy waves leaving Maupiti rocks Aquarius! The bad weather, and large waves continue during the 110 mile overnight crossing from Maupiti to Maupiha'a… This is one of the toughest crossings we have ever made!!! For a few hours after arriving the Maupiha'a shoreline, we zig zag around wondering if the pass safe to enter. Looking at 35Kts of wind, and a known current of 4kts to 6kts in the pass, we seriously debate not entering Maupiha'a, and continuing onto Palmerston. But, we had a few deliveries to make in Maupiha'a. It wasn’t easy, but we made it. And man was it was worth it!! With no expectations at the time of our arrival, we found Maupiha'a was an Island paradise. Just watch and see!! We made friends with the locals, and some of the cruisers... We were also invited to a few feasts of lobster, and coconut crab. MM MM Good! It was a beautiful day when we had to leave Maupiha'a, and Zivile was on the bow with the camera to show how narrow the pass.... And just when we are out of the pass a whale breaches 4 meter in front of Aquarius! That was so close and so scary! OMG - YOU HAVE TO SEE IT!! The mystery behind our engine running warm is solved, so we sailed 800 miles north. Barnacle Buster saved the day! We had a hot running engine, so we came back to Ft Lauderdale to troubleshoot. Thirty five years ago 'Big Red' dominated the biggest offshore race in the world by winning every leg of the Whitbread Round the World Race. It was a phenomenal performance by a Kiwi team led by Sir Peter Blake which not only reaffirmed New Zealand's sailing prowess, but laid one of the key foundations for making Auckland one of the most famous venues in the world for major sailing events. The success also went on to provide a connection with the America's Cup as well as helping to build a huge and successful marine industry down under. Winning the Whitbread was big at the time, but the repercussions over the years that followed were huge. Today, Steinlager II, locally known as 'Big Red' is still a big and active part of New Zealand's sailing heritage and is a regular sight on the Hauraki Gulf. It was also the platform on which Kiwi round the world sailor Conrad Colman announced his NZ entry for the next Ocean Race shortly after the new that the next race would include an Auckland stopover. It was, in short, a big week downunder and Matt Sheahan was there. Aside from having a snoop below decks aboard Steinlager II, he talked to Conrad and his team's co founder Rowan Gyde about the new campaign. He talked to Evelien van Vliet about the Trust that runs 'Big Red' and discussed the news with one of New Zealand's best known and longest serving sailing journalists, Martin Tasker where he explained what it means for NZ and The Ocean Race, along with highlighting the importance of the invincible big red maxi.

We have been sailing and living full time on our sailboat, Evolias for 2 1/2 years and have learned A LOT about sailing, about weather, and even about marriage. We started this beautiful journey as a newly married couple over two years ago in the southern Caribbean in Grenada with ZERO sailing experience, and since then have sailed nearly 10,000 miles, visiting nearly 30 different countries. The owner is a friend of me and we had a great sail with lots of fun. RAPIDO 60 Trimaran is the worlds fastest cruising yacht on the market today and have some impressive features and performance. I don't think you can sail faster than this in a cruising yacht with comfort, and relatively spacious and luxurious yacht for it's size.
