This is what Boat yard nightmares are made of... Fixing the Keel. https://www.sailingnandji.com In this episode, Nandji brings on a potential worst nightmare... Sitting too long on the hard stand, the lead/steel weight of the keel has oxidised, causing rust and the fibreglass to delaminate. How far down the rabbit hole do we travel... If you are going to do a job right, you do it right the first time. After juggling any thoughts and short cuts in my mind, I do what I know should do and cut it all off (half the keel) and ay up new fibreglass. A job I do not want to repeat any time soon. We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed and our home ended up on the reef... We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! Ready to sail across the Indian Ocean, we were only days away from leaving when the pandemic begun closing countries around us... We are stuck for now, but enjoying the slower pace as we have just had our first baby, born in Malaysia! I sail from France to Ireland --- with no specific destination in mind! I cross the entrance to the TSS and to my regret, try to give way to the big cargo ships. NOTE: ENGINE ON OR OFF DOES NOT CHANGE THE DYNAMIC OF THIS SITUATION. (Look at the geometry of the crossing.) I test the new staysail in strong winds -- with very favorable results. I blow a mooring ball approach, but arrive safely in two Irish ports.

The first 1,000 people to use the link will get a 1 month free trial of Skillshare https://skl.sh/mjsailing05231 Hooray, we've put the sanders down!! For a few days anyway. Now that we're in that sweet spot of temperature, we can get to vacuum bagging some of the larger items for our catamaran. We go to work building the structural beam which will sit at the back of our cabin top. Since our traveler will sit above this and be bolted through into it, we need to make sure it is very strong. Starting with a 4x8 sheet of coosa board, (a very dense foam), we cut it down into strips 3" wide and then stagger joints to get an overall length of 10.5'. Then we stack them on top of each other to make 7 layers. Bonding this all together involves our thickened resin to start, and then multiple layers of both unidirectional and double biased fiberglass. It's been nearly a year since we've last done any vacuum bagging and hopefully we haven't lost our touch! We hope you enjoy!

We haul the boat out in Carriacou, Grenada and finally get to see the damage that we caused when we hit 'something' in the muddy waters of the lock in Port Charlotte (see EP 3)... at the time, we rose about a foot out of the water and were petrified that we hit a manatee, but no manatee could have caused this!! It's certainly a bit worse than we thought... After checking out the keel damage we then try and get to work with our other tasks of replacing our cutlass bearing, stuffing box and sanding and barnacle removal for a new coat of paint... the rain however has other plans! Back in Thailand it is time to tick some jobs off that never ending boat list. https://www.sailingnandji.com/ In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we return to Thailand from Malaysia and get straight into the list of boat jobs needed to complete before we can continue on our journey. Thailand is a great place to complete tasks as there are many options to find boat supplies. Whilst we were cruising in Indonesia, Yosh made a boo boo and accidentally put a hole in the tender. After patching it up himself, the continual leak has been driving us crazy so we take it to the professionals to fix. Whilst there, we get some added protection for our RIB. Its tender love day, because dinghies need loving too! If you are interested in purchasing a cover yourself, be sure to send an email to Hans for more information! "We moved from Brazil to Sydney, but after a while living in Sydney we realized that this wasn't what we're looking for. So, we moved from Sydney to Bali to take a sabbatical time. We started exploring Bali and started a vlog. But that is the next episode story." Roberta “After I finished my civil engineering degree in Brazil in the end of 2015 I decided that I wanted to take an extra step. So with the full support of my long time adventure partner I started a Master Degree at Sydney University and that’s how we sold most of our belongings and moved from Brazil to Australia. But 6 months later we realized that actually that was not what we were looking for. So instead of flying back straight to our country, we decided to take a few sabbatical months and travel until the end of 2016. The plan was simple, we wanted to travel to places where it is cheap and/or comfortable, and take the time to think about our own lives so we could decide what we wanted to do from 2017 and on. That’s the story we tell in this first season of Odd Life Crafting” Duca WEEKLY EPISODES EVERY FRIDAY!! We hope to inspire other people to go out and live their dreams. Sailing to the other side of Middle Percy island to the more rugged and untouched Whites Bay. Marley got to cut sick and chase around his favourite toys in the world, Coconuts. With a good wind one morning, added to the fact we had no food left, we decide to set some sails south and complete our first overnight sail to Yeppoon and Great Keppel islands. The wind gradually disappeared and the motor had to be turned on. We had some Whale visitors that swam by and really put on a show for us. Launching themselves out of the water only 50m from Nandji. Regal has gone beyond mere fold-down gunwales and has introduced three-way electrically-actuated seats amidships in two rows, an asymmetrical deck layout, mezzanine seating unlike any we've ever seen, three MFD repeaters for guests and two GarmRests (mini MFDs on the armrest). The most impressive (and surprising!) thing of all is that it will give the fishiest boat on the water a run for its money. Watch our walkthrough review - while we were at the Miami International Boat Show. Hope to put her through the paces in the near future! Enjoying our channel? Consider joining the Calico Skies Patreon Crew for as little as $2 a month to get lots of extra goodies :) https://www.patreon.com/CalicoSkiesSailing This episode starts with a sweet recap of the bottom progress we've made on Calico Skies and the steps it took to get us here: Multiple rounds of fairing, sanding, glassing - then more sanding and fairing. We take viewers back to the beginning with all 71 blisters to present day where we've got several coats of barrier paint on and she already looks like a completely different boat. The next step is to give the keel some more attention which Bill does by applying 5200 which will bridge the gap between the led keel and fiberglass hull. This permanent type of seal will fill the gap but also provide flexibility between the led and fiberglass which move differently. Then he fairs and sands it to prepare it for barrier coat. Next we head back to the States for Grace to attend a doctors appointment and to pick up a new 420 amp solar panel from SunPowered Yachts. Upon arrival to Mexico we unload our new panel then take a quick walk to the OXO for water. We can't drink the water in Penasco and Bill forgot that we were on empty before heading up to the US. We've mentioned that Grace has been up in the US quite a lot recently attending doctors appointments and we flash back to one week ago while up in AZ. Grace discusses a diagnosis she received about a month ago that she hasn't shared yet publicly for various reasons (mainly that things moved quickly and one thing led to another and all of it was unexpected). While the good news is we caught DCIS at a very early stage the bad news is Grace will need surgery and boat work and cruising plans will take a big back seat to her health. Surgery date and recovery time are unknown but the estimate is 1 to 1.5 months to recover from the mastectomy taking us into April. Back in Penasco on the drive to the boat yard we discuss the complications of expected medical issues while cruising. Thankfully because Calico Skies is hauled out that makes travel much simpler since systems are offline. It means we can drive up and down at a moments notice and of all the places we've cruised in 7 years we are in a great position. Proximity to the states, family living in Scottsdale these are huge benefits. At the yard we work on fitting our 3 new solar panels with the help of Super Ryan who steps in. We are interrupted for a brief early morning tequila tasting with the yard Manager Sal. Then its back to Bill and Ricky our welder bantering and discussing next steps. Bill then gives viewers, and Grace who's been away, an update on the the progress that has been made to the arch in the last week plus. The big improvement is reduction of side by side play which was achieved by installing cross bars and welding the feet to the stern. We show viewers how much movement the arch initially had when we stress tested it and how little it has now. Then we discuss all of the other improvements which are bars for our paddle board and a welded D ring for the ratchet straps for the dinghy to name a couple. 0:00 Intro 0:10 Recap of Prepping for Bottom Paint 2:02 5200 at the Keel Joint & Fairing the Keel 5:21 Sun Powered Yacht Solar Panel Delivery 6:55 Late Night Water Run 9:39 Grace Health Update 16:40 Drive to Yard 18:52 3 New 410w SunPowered Yachts Solar Panels 20:40 Tequila Tasting at Cabrale's Boat Yard 21:32 Arch Update ~-~~-~~~-~~-~- The marine environment is tough on our camera gear, help keep us filming! https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/22NXPOQ8KCUO4/ref=nav_wishlist_lists_1?_encoding=UTF8&type=wishlist 5% off TotalBoat Orders! https://www.totalboat.com/calicoskiessailing 10% off SunPowered Yachts Panels, use code CALICO10 http://affiliates.sunpoweredyachts.com/337514/17099 Check out our store and shop our merch at https://calicoskiessailing.com/get-your-calico-skies-gear/ New Spinnaker Short Sleeve Uni-Sex Tee https://calicoskiessailing.com/spinnaker-tee/ Patreon too much of a commitment? show support and buy us a beer or some diesel :) https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/calicoskiessailing

Trouble is- we were in a pandemic, had a university degree to finish, on a student budget, only had ever sailed dingies, oh and didn't have a boat. The dream seemed not only unrealistic but pretty insane. However, we worked hard, finished our degrees, worked as many hours as physically possible, saved with all our might, got experience and in March 2022 bought our very own sailboat, Teulu. Having little sailing experience and being a young couple, we have encountered a tonne of hurdles and made plenty of mistakes! but for every downfall, there has always been a reason to dust ourselves off and carry on. You're at the fuel dock with a boat in front of and behind you. The wind and/or current is pushing you against the dock making it hard to leave without damaging your boat or those around you. To get out of this situation, BoatUS Magazine's associate editor Mark Corke teaches you how to use a spring line to help get you away from the dock with drone video footage so you can see what this boat-handling maneuver looks like from above. Go out, practice this technique, and you'll know exactly what to do next time the wind has you pinned against the dock! It's been fun sailing the Northern Latitudes, but now we want to warm up!! Finding VERY cheap airfare from London to the Canary Islands, we say goodbye to boat life for a few weeks as we enjoy all the spoils the island of Tenerife has to offer. Instead of flying back to Michigan, and snow, to see some family members, we bring them out to us for their first taste of Europe and life in the islands. While Matt's mom and step-dad are joining us for a week in our one bedroom apartment, we take in some of the highlights of this desert like island - including its black sand beaches, colonial Spanish towns, and miles of stunning coastline. We wanted to test out our new GoPro Hero8, and gave it a test on a few of our outings, solely using this camera to record our Real Time Update. A proper episode will follow sequentially where we hopefully hike the forests of the north, enjoy an authentic Guachinche meal, and *possibly* meet up with a few sailors headed our way. We hope you enjoy!! Much love from Tenerife, Jessica & Matt

Use code SVDELOS at the link below to get an exclusive 60% off an annual Incogni plan: https://incogni.com/svdelos This week's episode still doesn't feel real, and spoiler alert you may want some tissues for this one (even sweet little Sierra shed a few tears watching it 🥹) It's our final miles on Delos as we move her to the marina where we will haul her out, and the gravity of it all is really sinking in. We reflect back on 15 years of memories, adventures, and emotions, and so much more. It was quite an intense and emotional moment for us, but we couldn't dwell on it for too long...because in true Delos fashion, our last mission is an absolute doozie, and we have to navigate our way through a shallow & narrow river at night with rain, squalls, and about a foot of clearance under the keel. We’re finally sailing. With the yacht having been ashore for 10 years and after all this time working and hoping and dreaming, we are actually on the water with sails up and moving in some sort of direction. It’s a genuinely emotional thing to be at this point in the journey, with a vessel in seaworthy condition which just needs a small amount of prep work to head off into blue seas and warm winds. Thanks so much to our amazing friends who have been there giving their time and knowledge and skills to reach this point, and thanks to our Patreon Family for contributing to make all this possible. Join us on a walkthrough tour of a Pearson 424 ketch sailboat. This popular cruising sailboat just returned from Grenada and is still packed to the brim with provisions and spare parts. This is an opportunity for us to potentially buy an unlisted boat before anyone else knows about it. In this episode, John Gamlin from our exclusive service department VesselTec explains the simple steps for an engine inspection. John goes down into the engine bay and walks us through WOBBLES and what to do if you find something abnormal. This demonstration is done on a Lagoon 42 with 2 Yanmar Diesel Engines. Processes may differ depending on your engine type and make. See blog... https://tmgyachts.com/how-to-perform-routine-engine-maintenance/
The Lagoon 40 will replace the Lagoon 39 and 38. The 39 was not a big success, but the 38 has been the catamaran more sold in the short catamarans history. It was an extraordinary success with more the 1000 boats built. The Lagoon 40 has all the characteristics to be a new great success. We went to Marina Cala dei Medici in Tuscany, Italy, to sea trial the boat in one of the two Lagoon boat test centres run by NSS Yachting, the biggest Lagoon European dealer. If you want to make a sea trial of one Lagoon, you can contact https://www.nssyachting.com/. The Lagoon 40 will replace the Lagoon 39 and 38.
