In a few weeks time 40 skippers will be heading off from the start in Les Sables d'Olonne on the west coast of France in the biggest and toughest single handed offshore race in the world. We've had a Gen 2 Starlink for over a year now, the hardware has been great, the ever changing contract less so! We are now testing a Starlink Mini which only draws half the power of the standard unit, which is great on a boat, but sadly it's not just the straightforward plug into your 12v boat you might have hoped for. But the question is, how will it work at sea, is it a viable alternative to the standard model ( the marine models use far too much power for an average yacht ) so should you buy one? UPDATE 8th Jan 2025 We are now in San Andros which fortunately is a Columbian Island, I say fortunately as hopefully this will reset our 60 day limit for being away from our registered country. We were in Panama for 40 days so only had 20 days left at that time. The unit continues to work just as well as the standard dish had done, we don't notice this difference, but we do notice the reduction in draw which is great, UPDATE 28 Nov 2024 The video has just gone out to the public, but we had it up for the Patrons a couple of weeks ago and have tested the Mini on and off shore during that time. The Unit is now fitted on the rear arch on the other side to the Standard dish we have. It's mounted Flat, the app complains that it's not aligned correctly but it doesn't seem to matter at all. We've had good solid uninterrupted connection all the time, just some very slight buffering during one or two of the very heavy rainstorms we have here to the San Blas. The Wifi hotspot from the router in the antenna give excellent connection throughout the boat. I used the long lead supplied running from the arch down through where all the other cables go through a gland at the stern of Fair Isle, then it runs through the boat to the Nav Station midships. There was only just enough cable! I'm powering from the small Victron Phoenix inverter I bought for the Standard Starlink. Not as efficient as staying DC and just ramping up the voltage but the Phoenix inverters are very efficient and I'm using half the power of the Standard, so very impressed with the set up. We did go off shore sailing from Colombia to Panama and I realised the toggle for Priority service is still there, I had been told it had disappeared ( apparently it's about to) But I toggled on to Priority data for the two day crossing to Panama and the system worked fine. Just charging $2 /Gb for the data used while on Priority, we switched straight back to Standard (unlimited) data on the Roam package as soon as we reached the San Blas Islands and that works fine too. We have now left our registered country (Colombia) so in theory the clock is ticking and I will be cut off in 60 days time. The solar panels can be quickly and easily tilted and rotated through 360 degrees to track the sun in order to generate more power when required. If you are considering increasing the power generation on board your boat, solar power is the way to go. Solar panels are silent, maintenance free (with no moving parts), relatively cheap and very long lasting, with many panels guaranteed for 25 years. If you are considering installing solar panels yourself then you should watch this video as it may give you some ideas. The 5 steps to install solar panels as outlined in this video are: 1. Decide where to fit the panels 2. Buy the largest panels possible (Based on your budget and the space available) 3. Buy a Charge controller (MPPT charge controllers are far superior to PWM charge controllers, and can be picked up at a reasonable price online) 4. Fit the solar panels 5. We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). The Transatlantic Race 2015 is a 2,800-mile race from Newport, R.I., to The Lizard on the southwestern corner of England. This is the 30th transatlantic race since three New York Yacht Club members sponsored the first one in 1866. A fleet of 38 boats—ranging in size from 40 to 140 feet and in age from 100 years to 10 months—departed from Newport in one of three different starts (June 28, July 1 and July 5). Start 3 includes four of the fastest ocean racing yachts on the planet, including the new super maxis Comanche, owned by Jim & Kirsty Clark and skippered by Ken Read, and Rambler 88, owned and skippered by George David, as well as two trimarans, Phaedo3 and Paradox. All four sailed out of Newport in ideal conditions, quickly touching more than 20 knots of speed under bright sunshine. #tr2015

$1,000 of bonding agent in our hands and one chance not to mess this up. Matt and I have been quite busy these past few days (just finished this project yesterday) and using the warm weather at our disposal to break out our methacrylate bonding agent again. It's the adhesive we use to bond all the pieces of the hull together before they get glassed. Most of the boat HAS been put together at this point, but we still have the very large cabin top to contend with. Before we can even attach it to the boat, we need to bond the three separate pieces together. Matt spends a few days prepping the overlapping flanges, and then we're ready to go. This round we're lucky to have a new batch of methacrylate with a longer working time, going from 45 minutes previously up to 90 minutes now. And for the first bond we need every single minute, as things are not lining up like they should. We hope you enjoy!

We have been sailing our floating home along the beautiful coast of Thailand getting to know the country better, immersing ourselves in the culture by signing our sailing teens up to a Muay Thai, kick boxing class. We have been enjoying the freedom of travelling around the many tropical islands, on hired mopeds. However, while traversing Phuket, the boys unfortunately crashed their moped, ending up under a truck and injuring themselves in the process. The police were called. Having heard terrible stories about Thai police dealing with tourists harshly, we spent several tense minutes believing they would throw the book at us. However, the reality was quite different. Fast forward a few days and an incredibly stupid decision on our part, made while pulling up a mooring line, resulted in us once more rubbing shoulders and causing friction with the the water authorities in Phang Nga Bay. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978.
