A couple of days later we make a bus trip with a short levada walk but with spectacular views when we got back to Funchal we stumpble into a classic veteran car show and spend some time looking at those classic beauties. We test our grill for the first time in the water. Right before we plan to leave I happend to see when the made a new flower carpet. But you have to watch the whole episode to find out if we really did leave for the Azores. We are a middle aged couple that has left our hectic business lives to go sailing with our boat Fridá af Wisby and our cat Litza. Our goal is not to go to a specific place but to reach a state of mind where we can really enjoy life. Anders has been at the sea most of his life and sailed for the Swedish national dingy sailing team as a young man. Gitte has also grown up with boats and spent every summer sailing with her father as a teenager but made a pause of about 15 years without sailing as an adult, had just begun to pick-up the interest before she meet Anders in 2017. Onboard we also have our cat Litza a 4 year old Devon Rex we call her the cattain because cats always decide over their humans. Fridá af Wisby is a Wauquiez 47 pilot saloon that we Gitte and Anders bought in UK in 2019 and that we have sailed to Gotland and in season 1 2020 we sail in the Baltic Sea. During season 2 We sailded south to Dieppe Normandy France. After a winter in France in Season 3 we started to sail the Atlantic coast of Europe to Xufre in Spain where we lifted the boat over the summer while we where back in Gotland to work at our hostel we got there. Season 4 got a short sailing season where we only sailed to Lagos on the Algarve coast of Portugal where we hauled out once again this time to go throug a long list of boatwork and to build a solar arch to make the boat more self-suficient with electricity. After 6 months in Lagos we kicked-off season 5 with real bluewater sailing first to the northerly Atlantic island Porto Santo and Madeira and then further out to the Azores that lays in the middle of the Atlantic ocean before turning back towards the mainland and south coast of Portugal again.

From Benodet to near Quimper we had a lovely 3 hours, taking in all the sights and sounds of the river as well as stopping on a mooring for lunch. What more could a sailor ask for!!! The experience of Hurricane Helene has left my wife resolute about avoiding such events in the future. Danielle and I mutually agree that our next move should be outside the Hurricane triangle. The storm's impact was substantial, resulting in three sunken boats and seven beached vessels in our community. When Hurricane Helene was first forecasted, we began preparing our boat while tracking its trajectory. Before the storm made landfall, we took precautions to reinforce our Dodger, secure our sails, and generally fortify our vessel. As the storm approached, we deliberately positioned our sailboat on the leeward side of a bridge and released ample anchor chain. In the hours preceding the storm, we observed increasing wind speeds and swelling waves on the windward side of the bridge. Fortunately, the storm's trajectory shifted westward, mitigating the impact, although Hurricane Helene remained substantial. At certain points, wind gusts reached 60 knots, the boat's bucked violently on the bridge's windward side. On the leeward side of the bridge, wave formation was hindered, but the wind exerted considerable stress on the sailboat's dodger. Despite this, I retired early, much to my wife's dismay, as she remained vigilant throughout the night. Fortunately, we weathered the night unscathed, but the morning revealed extensive damage. Following a morning inspection of our sailboat, which revealed no damage, we observed that neighboring vessels on the opposite side of the bridge had sustained significant damage. Upon crossing over in our dinghy, I counted seven boats that had run aground on rocks along the bridge bank and four sunken vessels. I spoke with a woman whose boat was grounded, who acknowledged she had erred in staying on that side of the bridge. Shortly thereafter, a tow boat successfully rescued her vessel. Das Segeln muss in dieser Zeit zurückstehen – die Gesundheit und das Dasein für meinen Sohn sind jetzt das Wichtigste. Danke an alle, die Verständnis haben, treu bleiben und uns in Gedanken begleiten. ❤️ Nach einer schweren Krebserkrankung starte ich einen Neuanfang. Ich möchte meinem Leben eine neue Richtung geben und steige aus. Ich nehme mir eine unbefristete Auszeit unter Segeln. Dies ist die Geschichte meines Segeltörns.
