This week we replace the wooden transom where the outboard mounts to the boat. The wood had begun to get soft and was in need of replacing. During this project, we used a variety of techniques and processes that can be useful information for many boat working projects. We head around lands end using the inshore passage. this route reduces the length of the journey massively but should only be attempted in settled weather. We see dolphins on our way around making it extra special. The wind fills our sails and we anchor of St Michaels Mount. This is a truly beautiful spot and the gardens are a marvel in spring. After a little strolling around town and a few dives, we headed out to to Egg Island to spend some time with friends. There was a lot of other boats but it was a great time! Egg Island is a small uninhabited island near Eleuthera, an awesome spot to hang around. We then headed out to the sand bar to play on the swings and skim board. November 21-23, 2020 In this episode, we check out Gijón and the most popular beach in the area, both for dogs and for surfers. The boys tried out their surfing skills on a fin-less board and we lose Aksel in the water. When we arrived in Spain, we felt like we were finally back on track in our sailing plans. We were in “the south”, as we Norwegians so lovingly have labled any country from Spain and southward in Europe – basically anywhere where one could depend on a warm climate for a vacation tan…And, there were palm trees everywhere! A definite sign of the warmer latitudes we were soo looking forward to! I, Liv, really enjoyed the charming old city with it's cobblestone streets and beautiful architecture. We definitely noticed the first signs of Christmas decoration and couldn’t believe it had already gotten that late in the year! But, we had arrived “the south”, so we were ok with it now. 😊 The next day, the boys wanted to try out the boogie-board at the beach we visited - one of the most well-known beaches in the area - Playa de San Lorenzo…a hotspot for surfers – and our 4-legged furry friends. We brought our boogie board, but it had no FIN, so it was very difficult to steer & get control of it, but that doesn’t stop our boys… As WE were being mesmerized by the active dogs, Aksel seemed to have drifted off far away from us! Now, my Mommy-heart was pumping hard and I commanded Eivind to jump out in the water to find him! We spend a day here exploring the midieval old town with it’s cobblestoned streets and Gothic architecture, walk along the golden beach and take a dingy safari to check out a nearby cave before we sail further west to A Coruna. In September we had the privilege to witness an amazing encounter between the islands of Pico and Faial at the Azores. Nearly two hours we swam and dived with Yellowfin tunas, Bluefin tunas, a Sei whale (which we didnt see at first), Atlantic spotted dolphins and many birds (Scopoli's shearwater and seagulls) forming a massive bait ball beneath the surface. We left the dock at the Isle of Harris marina at the break of dawn, the first light of morning casting a soft glow over the tranquil waters. As our vessel set course for Tobermory, the initial motoring soon gave way to motorsailing and, finally, to pure sailing under clear, sunlit skies. As we approached Neist Point, the sea came alive with a breathtaking spectacle. Pods of dolphins danced around us, leaping and playing in the sparkling waves. Their graceful acrobatics were a marvel to witness, and we captured plenty of this enchanting dolphin footage to share. The first book to receive this treatment is for many, the first real offshore sailing book ever written - it is of course ' Sailing Alone Around the World' by Captain Joshua Slocum. Slocum was born and raised not 60 miles from where I live here in Nova Scotia so this was the most obvious book for me to start with but it was also by far the most popular book suggested by listeners. I can only hope that I do that old shellback some justice and help bring his incredible story to life for another generation of sailors. We bought a woodland, and this is episode two. Lately my dad has been struggling, and sometimes the only thing you can do is show up and try to make life a little easier in the ways you know how. This day in the woods wasn’t about fixing everything or having the answers. It was about small practical jobs, creating a bit of order, and spending time together in a place that usually brings calm. The woodland has always been somewhere we can work quietly, think clearly, and breathe. So I focused on steady progress, simple builds, and just being there. This isn’t a how-to, and it isn’t a dramatic story. It’s real life, a bit of graft, family, and what it means to care for people as best you can. We bought a woodland to build something slowly — not just structures, but a way of life. It's time to switch out our propellers and this is an upgrade we have been longing to make for a few years now. We've been dragging our old fixed props behind our boat for more than 25,000 nautical miles and they cause some serious drag, slowing us down and making our passages way less efficient. We knew we wanted to move away from fixed props, but there are always drawbacks to the alternative offerings of folding or feathering propellers so when we found these GORI props, they ticked all the boxes for us. We will still retain maximum power when motoring in forward AND reverse, but we'll also have the benefits of maximum efficiency when we're sailing and the props fold away, with decreased drag and potential to catch on loose lines or items in the water. We'll test them for real when we get back in the water and start sailing again, but we're super excited to finally make this change. First off, we need to figure out how to remove our old props and while we're at it we're going to change our cutlass bearings too - and that's a whole story in itself.
