Welcome to our latest #CruisingConversation with Evan and Karly aka Navigating Nietzels. What happens when high school sweethearts from the middle of America, decide to enjoy some boating adventures and film their story while working from their trawler? It’s all here on their YouTube channel, Navigating Nietzels – Here is a link so you can subscribe and follow along. https://www.youtube.com/@navigatingnietzels One message that kept coming through it is their theme, “Don’t wait for someday…” They are floating proof that if you have the desire, you can find an affordable trawler and set it up for taking on the Great Loop. They have enjoyed thirteen months of cruising and working, guided by their enthusiasm, optimism and their loveable dog, Ripley. This video originated when Jeff attended the May 2025 AGLCA (America’s Great Loop Cruising Association) event in Norfolk, VA aboard the Ocean Alexander Classicco 50 Lightning to learn more about trawlers doing the Loop (and in the hopes of finding a buyer for Lightning). JMYS encourages everyone thinking about doing the Loop to join AGLCA and attend their events – they are first class. The owner of Lightning asked Jeff if he was following Evan and Karly’s channel, Navigating Nietzels. The conversation started something like, “You’ve got to meet the Nietzels; they also have a YouTube Channel”. Why not? After a brief introduction on the docks—they were a couple of slips over from Lightning—we agreed to meet the next morning aboard Northern Latitude for an impromptu interview. With no preconceived notions or background, it was a fresh conversation with a younger couple just beginning their trawler lifestyle journey. We set up our video cameras, sat in their saloon and enjoyed an unscripted, general conversation about their background and their early days starting the Great Loop. What a treat! Evan and Karly are personable, thoughtful and just great people to hang out with. I was impressed with their energy and enjoyed hearing about their story that others had already been watching online. There is so much good stuff on YouTube, it is always rewarding to discover an interesting new channel. The Norfolk AGLCA event ended, the film footage that was recorded became a back burner project for all of us, and ultimately the interview was never composed into a video. Fast forward to Fort Lauderdale TrawlerFest in February 2026 when we met up again and lamented that we never found time to produce that video from our first meeting. By this time, Evan and Karly were less than 100 miles from finishing the Great Loop and the ultimate Looper accomplishment, crossing their wake. Like many others who subscribe and watch their episodes I felt I knew them pretty well from the content they shared. We talked about shooting a new film and splicing the original in between. Trawlerfest had just wrapped up for the day and our friends at Selene Yachts Americas let us set up in the pilothouse of the gorgeous Selene 60 Classic, Kaimana. We turned on the cameras and set out to finish what we started – catching up on their Loop lessons and talking about their future, which seems to be a planned continuation to work while aboard, sharing their lives with an ever-expanding audience of YouTube subscribers. An amazing weekend was had by all of the MC38 Fleet out on Pittwater in the Sevenstar International MC38 One Design Championship, John Bacon and his crew on Dark Star, battled it out over the seven races to take home the inaugural Championship Title. Five MC38s took to the starting line on Saturday morning, for some exceptional racing on Pittwater. John Bacon's "Dark Star" took the first race, but saw exactly how quickly the tables could turn in the close racing when Leslie Green steered his crew on "Ginger" to take 1st in the second race. After three windward/leeward races and a short passage race on Day One, "Dark Star" had the lead over Ross Hennessey and his crew on "Ghost Rider" by 4 points, and only 8 points separated the 1st and 5th place. "We were the overnight leaders, with 4 points clear" said John Bacon "we knew that if we came last in the first race on Sunday and Ghost Rider came 1st the regatta would be wide open, and in a self fulfilling prophecy that is exactly what happened. Spinnaker handling is key, we made a mistake and we came last, that's what this racing is all about" Sunday saw more very close racing between the fleet of MC38s with all boats applying the pressure, "Vino", "Ghost Rider" and "Ginger" all taking a 1st place during the day. "We had a solid finish in the second race over Ghost Rider" said John Bacon "the last race everyone was pushing hard, Ghost Rider and Vino had the pressure on, they sailed a brilliant race -- thanks to Ross for putting it to us" The Howard Spencer and his Kiwi team "Menace" enjoyed themselves, having only sailed the MC38 once before, they had a great time and can't wait for the next event. It was a testament to everyone who sailed on the weekend; it was very close sailing, all putting a brilliant show for the spectators that came to watch. In John Bacon's acceptance speech he thanked everyone for coming out and competing, McConaghy Boats, the Sponsors, Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club and his crew including Cameron Miles who left straight after the presentation for the birth of his third child. It was an incredible sight to see the five boats blasting around. "It is exactly what we dreamed of for the MC38s" commented Jono Morris Managing Director of McConaghy Boats, "Everyone had such a great time on and off the water and we are very pleased to see such a strong fleet and close racing. We had such a range of people competing in the event and everyone came away with a smile on their face, congratulations to everyone who competed, it was such a thrill to watch. The RPAYC did a great job in organising the racing" The MC38 Class is working on the calendar for the next 12 months and expects to see the next race in March next year.

Ce dimanche 19 novembre, à 15h 06mn 44s, Morgan Lagravière et Eric Peron ont franchi la ligne d’arrivée de la 13e édition de la Transat Jacques Vabre en troisième position de la catégorie Imoca. Le duo aura mis 14 jours 01h 31mn et 44s pour parcourir les 4 350 milles théoriques depuis Le Havre à la vitesse moyenne de 12,91 nœuds, mais il a réellement parcouru 4 714 milles à 13,96 nœuds. Son écart au premier St Michel-Virbac est de 17h 54mn 58s. Morgan et Eric n’ont rien lâché sur cette Route du Café toujours positionnés dans le tiercé de tête. La bagarre entre SMA, St Michel-Virbac, Malizia II et Des Voiles et Vous ! a débuté dès la ligne de départ devant le Havre le 5 novembre dernier. Rapide et engagé, le début de course demandait de prendre le tempo dès le coup de canon, c’est ce qu’on fait les deux skippers de Des Voiles et Vous ! en prenant la première place dans les conditions dantesques après le passage du raz Blanchard : 30 nœuds de vent à contre-courant. Au passage du front, le tandem colle au train de SMA en deuxième position cravachant pour ne pas perdre du terrain. La suite verra un St Michel-Virbac en patron chassé par SMA et des Voiles et Vous !. Malgré un Pot au noir à risque, Morgan Lagravière et Eric Peron sont parvenus à tirer leur épingle du jeu. Le bonheur de naviguer ensemble a transpiré tout au long de cette Transat Jacques Vabre, et l’on sait que quand le plaisir est là, la réussite n’est jamais très loin ! Le glacier Garibaldi se découvre enfin au bout de 10 miles de la remontée du Seno (fjord) Garibaldi. Sur le chemin du retour, attirés par des cris venant de la rive gauche, nous avons découvert une colonie de lions de mer juste au moment ou un petit, venait de naitre. Cet évènement a attiré un vol d'urubus à tête rouge (une des quatre espèces d'urubus de la famille des vautours) qui se sont alors disputés le placenta du petit lion. (dernière photo).

The third GC32 World Championship got off to a difficult start today off Villasimius, Sardinia. One race was successfully held the magnificent bay off Marina di Villasimius and the Capo Carbonara marine reserve before the wind began performing laps of the compass dial.
