From our campsite at Samuel P. Taylor State Park in CA — we head north to Tomales Bay. At the Tomales Point trail head we go back in time to the 1800s and explore Pierce Point Ranch. Then we hit the foggy trail in search of amazing views of the Pacific Ocean and Tomales Bay. Thick fog reduced visibility, but not our spirits! Of course we get some delicious camp cooking in with an egg, avocado and sausage sandwich!

After my recent sail I just know I have to make a boom for my Drascombe Lugger. I'm told that an old Mirror dinghy gaff is the perfect size to do just the job, and as it happens I still have my old one in the garage doing nothing. So I dig it out and fins all the parts I need and set to making something a bit make shift for a test sailing this week. I also use some spare aluminium tubing I had knocking about to make a new boarding ladder. This one should work brilliantly. Sailing my beautiful 2010 Precision 18 sailboat with a double-reefed mainsail and a severe weather (80%) jib in heavy winds in the mountains of Colorado. In this video, I do a bunch of fast sailing, talk about weather helm, move the boat's CLR (center of lateral resistance) aft by adjusting the centerboard and barely make it past an island by reducing my leeway by lowering my centerboard to increase lateral resistance. I also demonstrate a so-called "chicken gybe," a heavy weather gybe, and try out the inadvisable technique of sailing in heavy winds dead downwind wing-on-wing. While Brioni is recovering, I'm left to do all these boat projects on my own and even though it would be infinitely easier to take our main sail down with an extra pair of hands, I'm going to figure out a way to make it work. I need to take the sail off the boat to repair some damage we sustained on our passage from Tonga to New Zealand, and there are plenty of sailmakers nearby who can help me out if Brioni can't sew it herself. But there will be challenges while we're tied up inside a marina so hopefully the wind will cooperate. I can also move on to the job that I was excited about when I first started the ceiling repair, and at last we'll have our saloon back when I replace all the ceiling tiles. We are marching on through this refit and ticking off as many jobs as possible so that we can get back out sailing again as soon as possible. Brioni is doing her best to recover as well, but it's a slow journey.
