"Ahab's Rolling Sea: A Natural History of Moby-Dick" Presented by Richard J. King January 16, 2020 Richard J. King comes to the Herreshoff Museum to present Ahab's Rolling Sea: A Natural History of "Moby-Dick," a book sure to delight the naturalists, mariners, and readers among us. King will give a brief talk about the book, followed by discussion and book signing. He is also an illustrator, so he draws an original color cartoon in each book--a perfect holiday gift! Although Herman Melville’s "Moby-Dick" is beloved as one of the most profound and enduring works of American fiction, we rarely consider it a work of nature writing—or even a novel of the sea. Yet Pulitzer Prize–winning author Annie Dillard avers "Moby-Dick" is the “best book ever written about nature,” and nearly the entirety of the story is set on the waves, with scarcely a whiff of land. In fact, Ishmael’s sea yarn is in conversation with the nature writing of Emerson and Thoreau, and Melville himself did much more than live for a year in a cabin beside a pond. He set sail: to the far remote Pacific Ocean, spending more than three years at sea before writing his masterpiece in 1851. A revelation for "Moby-Dick" devotees and neophytes alike, "Ahab’s Rolling Sea" is a chronological journey through the natural history and seamanship in Melville’s novel. From white whales to whale intelligence, giant squids, barnacles, albatross, celestial navigation, and sharks, King examines what Melville knew from his own experiences and the sources available to a reader in the mid-1800s, exploring how and why Melville might have twisted what was known to serve his fiction. About the author: Richard J. King is visiting associate professor of maritime literature and history at the Sea Education Association in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. For more than twenty years he has been sailing and teaching aboard tall ships in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. He writes and illustrates a column on marine animals for Sea History magazine, edits the “Searchable Sea Literature” website, and was the founding series editor of Seafaring America. He sailed solo across the Atlantic in 2007 aboard a Pearson Triton. He is the author of "Lobster" and "The Devil’s Cormorant: A Natural History". We are a middle aged couple that has left our hectic business lives to go sailing with our boat Fridá af Wisby and our cat Litza. Our goal is not to go to a specific place but to reach a state of mind where we can really enjoy life. Anders has been at the sea most of his life and sailed for the Swedish national dingy sailing team as a young man. Gitte has also grown up with boats and spent every summer sailing with her father as a teenager but made a pause of about 15 years without sailing as an adult, had just begun to pick-up the interest before she meet Anders in 2017. Onboard we also have our cat Litza a 4 year old Devon Rex we call her the cattain because cats always decide over their humans. Fridá af Wisby is a Wauquiez 47 pilot saloon that we Gitte and Anders bought in UK in 2019 and that we have sailed to Gotland and in season 1 2020 we sail in the Baltic Sea. During season 2 We sailded south to Dieppe Normandy France. After a winter in France in Season 3 we started to sail the Atlantic coast of Europe to Xufre in Spain where we lifted the boat over the summer while we where back in Gotland to work at our hostel we got there. Season 4 got a short sailing season where we only sailed to Lagos on the Algarve coast of Portugal where we hauled out once again this time to go throug a long list of boatwork and to build a solar arch to make the boat more self-suficient with electricity. After 6 months in Lagos we kicked-off season 5 with real bluewater sailing first to the northerly Atlantic island Porto Santo and Madeira and then further out to the Azores that lays in the middle of the Atlantic ocean before turning back towards the mainland and south coast of Portugal again.

In this episode we were trying to catch up with ourselves after the manic few days we had drying out, so it was nice to have friends come to stay, forcing us to relax. We spent time swimming playing on the beach and relaxing but also found time for a few jobs including mounting the Starlink and finishing the back deck shower rebuild. We said goodbye to our friends and sailed all day to Charles Town. We picked up a free mooring buoy and went to explore. The town was founded by Hughs great great great great great great uncle Charles. We strolled around, saw various links to the family name and explored the museum. We went blackberry picking and foraged for mussels. We are a family of five with plans for an epic adventure, sailing around the world. We have bought a boat we have to gut it, rebuild it, sell all of our possessions and have t he guts to cast off. Follow our adventures. IN THIS VIDEO: Welcome to the "Drowned Island", also known as Anegada in the British Virgin Islands! We grabbed a mooring ball and went ashore for our adventures. Join us we tour the island looking for flamingos, which quickly became a contest of sampling Painkillers at various bars while also strategically placing stickers along the way. To finish of our incredible stay with such welcoming locals, we have a lobster dinner at the Lobster Trap! CURRENT LOCATION https://forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/display/SV-GTFO/ ABOUT OUR CATAMARAN: We love our new Balance 482 - it's a perfect size for a cruising couple to handle and is a great "balance" of performance and comfort. One of our favorite features is the excellent ventilation since we mostly live as "hookers" (aka at anchor) where the boat automatically turns into the wind so we stay cool and we don't need to battle mold. We also have starlink for easy off-grid life. Our 2400 watt solar panel array also means we rarely need to run an engine to charge our batteries. ABOUT US: We saved for a our future boat, sold everything that we owned, and shipped the rest in a container to Cape Town, South Africa. We then flew there and explored South Africa by way of a safari and touring Cape Town before moving aboard our boat. We then sailed to Saint Helena, Ascension Island, Fernando de Naronha (Brazil), Martinique, Sint Maarten (Dutch and French side), the US Virgin Islands (Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas), the British Virgin Islands (Anegada, Norman Island, Jost van Dyke, and Anegada), The Bahamas (Inagua, Crooked Island, Long Island, George Town, Staniel Cay, the Exumas, and Eleuthera). We then sailed back to the United States, making landfall in Cape Canaveral, Florida. From there our destinations are endless! Both Dennis and Ann grew up military brats with Army fathers. Dennis (the Colonel) served 30 years in the US Army and his retirement pension helped us retire in our 50s. Ann (the ship's Captain) wrote Test Automation in Python and Java. Dennis and Ann met on Match.com where Ann had in her profile "Do you want to sail the world with me?" Ann easily brought Dennis into sailing, and he loved the GTFOplan of retiring early and sailing the world. After our journey on the ICW we have arrived to the historic town of St Augustine and are ready to play the parts of tourists for a day as we hop on the Old Town Trolley Tour Train. Come join us as we set out to explore the streets of this American beauty. Fair winds! Emmy & Marcus ______ We are Emmy and Marcus, a Swedish couple who has decided to leave our home and set sail out into the world with our boat Linnea. After a season in the Caribbean, we decided to leave Linnea in Trinidad and fly back to Sweden for the hurricane season. This allowed us to get an extra year of sailing and reach even more beautiful destinations for our second season of cruising. For now the goal is Greenland and back home to Sweden, via the Caribbean, BVIs, Bahamas, US east coast, and Canada. But who really knows how far our dreams might take us? Welcome aboard our floating home Linnea to join us on our adventures! ______ SUPPORT THE VIDEO PROJECT! We are a cruising couple who spend a lot of time into the process of making these videos for you to enjoy. All from story line planning, filming, editing and producing the videos is done by us alone. If you like what we do, please help us to cover the costs of running this production by setting up a Patreon pledge for whatever amount you can afford: https://www.patreon.com/linneasailing Want to give a one-time-support?
