As Sébastien Simon aboard Groupe Dubreuil crossed the line to take third, his impressive performance completed the podium spots in this edition of the Vendée Globe. But while three boats may have finished, there are 31 still racing and even as they head north and start to focus on the final stages, the race is getting harder and harder every day. They have all now been racing for 74 days and the toll is clear to see. The stress has risen considerably, the boats suffering more frequent damage and bodies are starting to break. Even for those closest to home, a major storm in the Atlantic provided serious cause for concern for Jérémie Beyou and Sam Goodchild while also proving that until you cross the line you cannot bank on anything. So, while the top silverware may have been claimed, the Vendée Globe is a long way from being over. Welcome to Episode 1 of Sailing Melody. In this first episode we introduce you to our family, our plans to sail around the world and do some sailing in our Snapdragon 24 around the coastline of North Wales. We explore the wildlife to be found and look at some different yacht and keel designs and underwater profiles in preparation for finding our Bluewater Sailing yacht to go full time cruising We are Jack, Melissa and Andy, a little family who live in North Wales. We have a small sailing boat called Aeolus which we sail around the welsh coastline. Feared by many the Bay of Biscay is known for its rough seas and violent storms as one of the stormiest seas in the world. Regardless of the bad reputation, with modern weather forecasting it is easy to time it right and find a good weather window. We sailed a total of 350 nautical miles and it took us 53 hours altogether from Camaret in France to A Coruna in Spain. The weather for our crossing started off a lot lighter than forecasted with an average of 5 knots and towards the end it turned out to be a lot stronger than forecasted with an average of 30 knots. Overall we couldn't have been happier with our crossing, despite the lack of sleep towards the end in the strong winds. We also get to properly test out our new solar and wind power setup to see if it was sufficient to keep the batteries topped up and also run the fridge, autopilot and all the other navigation eqipment. All the necessities we need on a longer ocean passage, specially with the Atlantic crossing coming up. After successfully sneaking into the interior of Cuba, we arrived in Viñales valley in the tobacco region of Cuba. We decided the best way to see the area was to rent bikes and look for the best rock climbing spots. As it turned out rock climbing was also illegal in Cuba, so we found ourselves participating in an illegal sport while on an illegal inland excursion. We had officially become outlaws! We have snuck into Raroia to avoid the westerly blowing and end up having a rather rough night. We wake up about 1am to realise we have dragged anchor and according to our navigation system, are sitting on top of the reef! We know we are not actually beached as we are flung side-to-side by the mother natures fierce breath. We move to another spot and head back to a very light sleep… In the morning out dinghy is nowhere to be seen. The line had been cut by the propellor during the night when we had shifted and we had no idea. Luckily for us the beaches are directly downwind, so we take our trusty patchy paddleboard ashore and hunt along the coastline for Roger. We find him at a local pearl farm a kilometer down from the village and a lovely man had bought him off the reef and onto the beach for us. So we were soooo fortunate that everything was safe and sound - boat and dinghy! How different that outcome could have been… Once the wind and rain have petered off a bit, we head ashore to get some incredibly slow internet, and meet some fabulous characters on the way. A young local family takes us in, shows us their athletic prowess, and gift us with some beautiful pearls. We aim to leave as soon as the wind tuns back to the SE, but regrettably look back on this village and this family that we should of stayed for a lot longer than we did. Our next and original destination is Kauehi, and we are not disappointed by its preceeding reputation. A gorgeous anchorage that we have all to ourselves. We cruise the inner reef finding sheltered spots to relax, kitesurf and explore. It is also a great place to spend Adams birthday. She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. This is a story of running from a storm into shelter only to find that shelter is inhabited by massive salt water crocodiles. The crocs don't seem to want to share either! The reality of life on board Florence, sailing around the world is not always good weather and easy days. We have to prepare our yacht Florence to weather a storm at anchor and on top of that we have to deal with the fall out of a swine flue outbreak on our isolated paradise island, decimating the animal population. We’ve been so lucky with lots of sunshine and warm weather for being late October but now there’s a big nasty low coming in over the Salish Sea. We seek shelter and then continue south to Port Townsend and finally arrive in Seattle, our last stop for the year! We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter, January 2016, and started sailing south along the coast of Europe.
