Qingdao is not only our home but a gorgeous city on the Yellow Sea at the foot of multiple mountain ranges. It is a paradise for an outdoor enthusiast! The city has endless roads and pathways for both running and cycling. Today's video highlights both the natural and the human obstacles that we encountered on our cycle from sea level over one of the passes of Laoshan, one of our favorite local mountains. Most of the roads in Qingdao are constantly groomed and perfect for cycling, but the village approach to the peak is an exception; the city has been working on this 3-4 mile stretch for almost a year now. While some of it has been restored, you will see we encountered many rough surfaces for road bikes! And, the result was a split tire and a flat on two different bikes. But, it was still worth it! At least there is evidence of ongoing road construction and an attempt to restore the road surface which will help us out when we hit the 14-17% grades. Right now, it's hard to gain traction. This is one of our favorite rides as it takes us through the local villages and growing areas. Right now the China Berry trees are blooming and the cherries are bright red and ready to be eaten straight from the tree. Every street was lined with cherry baskets and locals trying to sell their freshly picked fruit. If only we had a way to carry cherries in our cycling jersey pockets! The Class40 fleet, boasting an impressive variety of designs and builders even after two decades, delivered some of the most intense offshore racing throughout the event. After three days, ten hours, twenty-two minutes, and two seconds of grueling competition, it was Erwan Le Draoulec's Everial, a 2022 vintage Verdier-designed Pogo S4, that claimed victory. The crew of four, with an average age of just 26 (including Le Draoulec, Julien Herey, Pep Costa, and Robin Follin), showcased their prowess, breaking the Class40 record by a mere five minutes and 23 seconds, leaving spectators on the edge of their seats until the very end. The challenging race saw some of the boats being called over the line at the start, resulting in penalties that reshuffled the leaderboard. A little video a made before Xmas, and forgot about. Figured I might as well post it as it is in the realms of 'Kind of Interesting', if you are interested in the loads sweating a dockline creates. Roughly made but there we go. This is a follow up video based on the first dockline load video I made. Hope you enjoy. Let me know what you think I got wrong :). Its been rare, but a couple of times I have come across situations where a sailboat cannot be brought into the dock by sweating a dockline. This is usually pretty extreme circumstances (+40knots of wind, very little protection from seawalls etc). It caused me to wonder, why can't a boat always be moved if sweating a line can potentially give an infinite tension on the line. This is a little bit of figuring out why that is.
