After an aborted attempt to leave Milford Haven to head towards Cardiff in easterly winds we finally break free. We manage some sailing, some motoring and are escorted by dolphins. Always amazing and we are so excited to share our experience with you all. We anchor at Rhossili Bay for the night then head around worms head by the inshore passage to Cardiff. The passage is extremely foggy but in the last hour of the journey the fog clears and we arrive in Cardiff with glorious sunshine, resulting in a happy crew! An access door allows for movement between the cab and the back of the van. Il terzo giorno, di buon ora mettiamo la prua verso la Corsica, non c'è un alito di vento e percorriamo circa 70 miglia tutte a motore in un mare olio. Alle 20.30 circa diamo fondo a Plage du Lotu, aperitivo a prua, musica di sottofondo e poi cena. I giorni successivi li passeremo tra questa bellissima rada e quella della Saleccia accompagnati da tantissimi tuffi, relax e aperitivi che ci faranno trascorrere delle giornate fantastiche. Un giro di vento previsto per fine settimana ci farà decidere, dopo 5 giorni di rada di entrare in porto a Saint Florent per visitare il paese, fare spesa e ridossarci dal maltempo. Qui conosciamo Mario e Paola con cui trascorriamo due bellissime giornate in compagnia. Sabato, di buon ora usciamo dal marina, issiamo le vele e percorriamo quasi 70 miglia fino a Portoferraio dove diamo fondo, stravolti ma soddisfatti dalla bellissima veleggiata. Domenica si rientra verso la penisola, anche qui una bellissima navigazione a vela, al lasco, ci accompagna con una media invidiabile al Porto Verde di Scarlino dove aleremo la barca il giorno successivo per una serie di lavori che troverete pubblicati prossimamente sul nostro blog. Episode 051 In this episode Adam takes you through the three emergency steering systems we have on board our sailboat, Te Tāiko. The first is our emergency steering tiller that attaches directly to the rudder, the second which is our hydrovane self-steering system, and the third is soon to be the drogue we will have aboard. Tāiko's rudder stock is approximately 100 mm aluminum. Unfortunately, there have been cases where these rudder stock have failed. We have decided not to replace the rudder stock at present but we share with you what our contingencies are should we lose our steering or our rudder stock fails. We hope you enjoy it! Nach einem spannenden Bewerbungsprozess war es dann endlich so weit: Die Astronomische Schiffsübergabe beginnt mit dem Auslaufen aus Bermuda. Wir als Schüler*innenbesatzung meisterten die uns übertragenen Aufgaben mit viel Spaß und Elan bei bestem Wetter. Auch die Astronomische Navigation und das Loggen, also die Geschwindigkeitsbestimmung (mit Biomüll) klappten so gut, dass wir uns am Ende der Schiffsübergabe nur zwei Seemeilen von unserer eigentlichen Position glaubten. Alles in Allem war die diesjährige astronomische Schiffsübergabe für alle Beteiligten ein Highlight der Reise, an das wir uns lange erinnern werden. The process is simple and requires only a few supplies. Supplies: ✔️ Gutermann Sew-All Thread → https://a.co/d/ayM7Se5✔️ Elastic → https://a.co/d/52pDSMN✔️ Elastic threader tool → https://a.co/d/dDXnx1c✔️ King-size fitted or flat sheet → https://a.co/d/d0ZMm3X Steps: 1. Choose a sheet larger than your mattress. 2. If using a fitted sheet, cut off the elastic edge. 3. Determine how much fabric to remove for a snug fit. 4. Cut one corner open to lay the sheet flat. 5. Mark the upper corner with a safety pin for reference. 6. Trim up to 75” (190.5 cm) from the side of the sheet. 7. Open the opposite corner seam to lay it flat. 8. Create a right corner for the other top side. 9. Check the fit of the top corners. 10. Trim any excess fabric from the sides. 11. Shape and sew both bottom corners. 12. Sew a pocket along the bottom edge for the elastic. 13. Feed the elastic through the pocket. 14. Secure the elastic ends with a double square knot. 15. One of our favorite features is the excellent ventilation since we mostly live as "hookers" (aka at anchor) where the boat automatically turns into the wind so we stay cool and we don't need to battle mold. We also have starlink for easy off-grid life. Our 2400 watt solar panel array also means we rarely need to run an engine to charge our batteries. ABOUT US: We saved for a our future boat, sold everything that we owned, and shipped the rest in a container to Cape Town, South Africa. We then flew there and explored South Africa by way of a safari and touring Cape Town before moving aboard our boat. We then sailed to Saint Helena, Ascension Island, Fernando de Naronha (Brazil), Martinique, Sint Maarten (Dutch and French side), the US Virgin Islands (Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas), the British Virgin Islands (Anegada, Norman Island, Jost van Dyke, and Anegada), The Bahamas (Inagua, Crooked Island, Long Island, George Town, Staniel Cay, the Exumas, and Eleuthera). We then sailed back to the United States, making landfall in Cape Canaveral, Florida. From there our destinations are endless! Both Dennis and Ann grew up military brats with Army fathers. Dennis (the Colonel) served 30 years in the US Army and his retirement pension helped us retire in our 50s. Ann (the ship's Captain) wrote Test Automation in Python and Java. On quitte l'inlet de Fort Pierce tôt le matin en direction de West Palm Beach. Une belle navigation calme se transforme rapidement en pluie et rafales intenses. En essayant de prendre une prise de ris, la corde brise. On se débrouille avec les moyens du bord et on continue notre route. Des dauphins viennent nous rendre visite pour nous remonter le moral. On arrive à West Palm Beach en fin de journée et on se met à l'épaule avec le voilier Rojo. On fait les dernières vérifications sur le moteur et les voiles. On prépare un peu de nourriture et on fait une sieste. À l'heure du coucher de soleil on quitte l'inlet de West Palm Beach en direction de West End, Bahamas ! Le vent est chaud, le vent est doux. On prend un cap à 30 degrés au sud de notre point d'arrivée en espérant que le courant du Gulf Stream va corriger le tir. Le vent et les vagues augmentent graduellement pendant la nuit et à 7h le lendemain matin on voit déjà les Bahamas à l'horizon.
