It is a lap of the globe starting and finishing in Barcelona (Spain). This is an extreme sporting challenge and ocean adventure that puts human limits to the test. Organised by the Fundació Navegació Oceànica Barcelona (FNOB), the regatta is part of the IMOCA Ocean Masters World Championships. The start of the race is on the 31st of December 2014 at 13h00, with the starting line positioned opposite the W Barcelona hotel at the city's port. The finishes are forecasted for the end of March 2015. The boats cover some 23,000 nautical miles in a circumnavigation from Barcelona to Barcelona, putting the capes of Good Hope (South Africa), Leeuwin (Australia) and Horn (Chile) to port (their left) and the Antarctic to starboard (their right). During the three months of racing the skippers make their way through 12 climate zones and cross 3 oceans, as well as sailing in the Mediterranean Sea. The crews race on IMOCA 60 yachts, 18 metres in length. Their masts can reach up to a maximum of 29 metres, as high as a building with ten floors.

In honor of our late Curator Carleton Pinheiro, the Herreshoff Marine Museum and Halsey C. Herreshoff hosted an evening celebrating the mighty Herreshoff racing Schooner WESTWARD and her replica, the beautiful ELEONORA. ELEONORA had graced the HMM waterfront as her home during summer of 2017. The schooner WESTWARD was launched in March 1910 as hull number 692 at the Herreshoff Manufacturing Co. and became one of the most famous racing schooners in the world. WESTWARD was undoubtedly the fastest schooner in the world in her day, and with Captain Charlie Barr at her helm, she sailed successfully against well-known yachts like BRITANNIA, LULWORTH and METEOR II winning numerous trophies. For thirty-seven years, WESTWARD graced the yachting scene and represented all that was best in yacht design and workmanship. The yacht ELEONORA, an exact replica of WESTWARD, was built at the Van der Graaf shipyard in Holland and launched in March 2000. Since then, she has successfully participated in a number of classic sailing regattas and hosted a number of high profile guests. ELEONORA shows astonishing beauty under sail, her slender hull cutting a pathway through the sea, an elegant combination of beauty and power. Halsey Herreshoff, grandson of the designer and builder of WESTWARD, and Brendan McCoy, Captain of ELEONORA, explains what makes these boats special and tells the stories about their racing adventures. Coronabedingt haben wir unsere ursprünglichen Pläne, in den Lofoten zu segeln, über Bord geworfen und nutzten das kurze Fenster der norwegischen Grenzöffnung für ein, aus seglerischer Sicht, überraschend schnelles Abenteuer über das europäische Nordmeer in Richtung Ostsee. Allerdings nicht, ohne eine Traumstadt wie Alesund oder geeignete Kitespots aufzusuchen. Zwischen Tiefdruckgebieten gefangen, segeln wir, Micha und Shorty, mit nur drei Stopps vom Polarkreis nach Südnorwegen. Wetterbedingt bleibt auch dort keine Zeit für ausgedehnte Ankertage und Verkostung norwegischer Delikatessen. "One-night-stand" nähe Stavanger und weiter geht´s. Das Skagerrak müssen wir schnellstmöglich vor dem nächsten Sturm überqueren..., im weiteren Verlauf mit überraschenden Begegnungen. We throw in our 3 top tips to make a full refit much faster. Chapters: 0:00 Back at the boat 2:13 GRP Hull, Deck and joint 2:51 Deck without a core 4:44 Keel strength 6:49 No internal GRP mouldings 7:32 A fully separate aft cabin 8:22 Tip 1: Composting toilet 9:29 Tip 2: Remove all headlining 10:45 Tip 3: Replace all the windows 14:17 Bye Jane Some of the Sailing channels that we have learned from and seen these features work against them are: Sailing Magic Carpet. https://www.youtube.com/c/SailingMagicCarpet Their Cape George needing half the deck beams replacing, plus a lot of the plywood deck. Significant Keel Issues. Sailing Uma: https://www.youtube.com/c/SailingUma in the early days they discovered all the internal structure needed to hold their keel on was broken. Huge job to fix it. Wildlings Sailing. https://www.youtube.com/c/WildlingsSailing Nadiyana did an amazing job restoring their windows. But very, very hard to avoid leaks as nearly every channel with an old boat can't stop the leaks with the original windows. Look at the refits on "Sailing Uma", "Beau and Brandy Saiiing", "Bums on a Boat", "Sailing the good, bad and ugly", "Free Range Sailing" to see why a separate aft cabin would have helped. Composting toilet: Look at every boat diong a refit without one, also every boat doing horrible toilet fixes who doesn't have one. Headlining. An issue for everyone. Even with good headlinings, we suggest taking them down if you have any issues with leaks and not putting them up until the end or you will spend hours taking them down and putting them up multiple times. Two and a half years ago, when we bought Vida, she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel, and paraffin equipment as well as all the plumbing and electrics. We have composting toilets, are installing an electric motor and all electric cooking. We are fitting a huge solar array and probably a wind generator. We have replaced all the windows, removed all the headlining and more. We are replacing all the standing rigging with Dyneema synthetic rigging. This is the biggest sustainability project of our lives as we prepare for a retirement when we want to cruise the world using zero fossil fuels on a very low budget. We loved the amazing diving found right off the back of your boat in West End, Roatan. Diving, in general, was easy and convenient in this area. Tank refills were $4 (4 tanks in 6 minutes) and Mares also had a fully stocked store and workshop for repairs. They were the nicest people to work with too. The town of West End is small and quaint with some good food options. Our favorite was Sandy Buns. We LOVED the brisket sandwich and top on the list was the cinnamon bun and breakfast sandwiches. The 2024 Hospice Cup. America’s Largest Charity Regatta. 80 boats on 3 circles! Sanctioned by CBYRA and hosted by the Sailing Club of the Chesapeake, the 43rd running of this event has grown into a premier racing event and a destination for competitive sailors, all sailing to support of the gift of hospice. Since 1981, The Hospice Cup has been raising awareness and funds for hospice and palliative care in our region. This year’s team fundraising brought in over $50,000, with overall fundraising bringing in $206,000, and was given to this year’s beneficiaries: Montgomery & Prince George’s Hospice, Talbot Hospice, Capital Caring Kids, and the Luminis Health Gilchrist Lifecare Institute at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

En este video os enseño cómo han quedado las fundas de las ruedas del timón y una pequeña corrección que monté mal de los rizos de la vela mayor. Y lo más importante, seguimos con la domotización del barco basándonos en la aplicación Home Assistant. En esta ocasión hemos instalado un sensor de humo y un par de sensores de fugas de agua. Los hemos ubicado en sitios donde en condiciones normales nunca debería haber agua (junto a la hélice de proa y en el cofre de popa) Home assistant es un software libre que permite integrar cientos de sensores disponibles en el mercado y también permite fabricar los sensores a medida, como ya hicimos con el monitor de sentina inteligente. Todo ello se puede monitorizar bien desde el barco o bien desde tu casa (o cualquier otro sitio) y recibir alarmas. Las posibilidades son enormes, el siguiente proyecto que voy a hacer es un monitor de baterías, ahora mismo tengo la batería del generador y las baterías de la hélice de proa no las tengo monitorizadas. Cualquier problema con los cargadores haría que se descargasen y las tendría que reemplazar.
