We spent several weeks cruising the lagoon of New Caledonia while waiting for a weather window to complete the offshore passage to Australia. The contrast between the big city of Noumea and the pristine coral reefs and beautiful nature were only seperated by a short day sail. With it's huge lagoon inside the protecting reef, New Caledonia has excellent cruising in calm waters. Julia is a traditional wooden boat, built in Desolation Sound in 1960 to William Atkin's Ingrid design. The dinghy is skin on frame, built to the Annabelle design by Dave Gentry. Although it may seem like we took the robbery in stride, it definitely felt awful losing so many things that we still need in our lives. Luckily, we had our camera gear (outside of the brand new drone) insured so we didn't lose the most important items in our lives. At the end of the day, all of these things are just stuff and replaceable. We refuse to let the person who stole our things steal beyond that, like our peace of mind and have us be frustrated by something we had zero control over. We've both spent a lot of time finding other ways to make side income without taking up too much of our time and will hopefully be adding some more $ to our depleted cruising kitty in the coming months to buy back some of the things we lost. Now it's back to boat life and all we can envision is crystal blue Bahamian waters. Onward! In this week's video, I open up a pair of saildrives to replace the shaft seals. The first saildrive has no issues, but the second saildrive has a nasty surprise. The nut on the vertical shaft has somehow come loose and slowly been ground down to a lovely dome shape. The plans call for a storage area in the forward bunk, but we're sealing it off. ** Improve your energy, immunity, and gut health today - http://athleticgreens.com/mjsailing ** In this week's episode we decide to make our own plans in the forward bunk, and close up an area which is used for storage on all production Max Cruises'. This is the first time we're making a change based on what we want instead of what's in the plans. Deviating out on your own can sometimes mean big challenges as you're faced with finding solutions on your own, but Matt was a champ at templating this oddly shaped area within the boat and it came out looking great. Also, another section we have to address, because back in the summer we 'made alterations' from the original plan to make more room for our engine bed. We still need structural support in that area, so once again Matt needs to make something from scratch to replace the bulkhead which we'd moved further forward.
