As we continue cruising north in the Exumas we stop at some of the local underwater sights to do some finless (because we forgot them) snorkeling. We saw the well known Seaquarium and a sunken plan before moving north to the heart of the Exumas Land and Sea Park at Warderick Wells. It's a neat spot to stop but Arya couldn't really go to land do to a protected mammal that lives there. And in case you're newer to the channel, last winter we drove ourselves up to Maine to purchase two 2019 29 hp Yanmar diesel engines which came off an Antares catamaran. At the time we weren't sure which engine direction we were going to head, but the deal was just too good to pass up. So, we've been storing them in the tent ever since, and now we're working hard to get the engine beds prepped for them. Watch as Matt carefully crafts this template, and once it's in place, he figures out exactly how it will sit under our master berth. With a stern tube from Vetus on its way very soon, Matt finds the line and angle at which this will come out of our boat and drills a test hole from the engine bed and out through the bottom of our boat. In San Juan we rented a car to go around town and do some errands and from what we've seen so far we like this city A LOT! We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built aluminium Beason 40, and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are starting to build a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life. We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams. The ethos behind these very odd looking yachts is safety, simplicity, performance, and affordability. For example, what other 60 foot performance multihull could you DIY build to compare to similar sized multi-million dollar yachts, but for 1/10th of the cost or less? I'll answer that, there isn't one. This is why I love these boats, despite their odd look. Realistically, the outside the box thinking of Rob Denney is very refreshing in an industry where it seems that all the major brands are converging and becoming as similar as possible. We visit a wreck on a nearby reef. It is sad to see another boat washed up on a reef, damaged and stripped beyond repair. We take some time to explore the crystal clear waters and coral reef but return back to home base, Cayo Alcatraz to spear some dinner. It's Margarida's turn to supply the fish and she doesn't disappoint people bagging a very nice dog snapper. Covid is still worrying her but she returns home with a big smile to match that big fish. My arms have gotten bruised and banged up from all our test fits with the cockpit seats - but now it's time to permanently bond them down! We start the episode responding to a popular question of "When are the engines going in?" Then Matt does some trimming to our swim step, which will eventually let us get in to glass that area from the inside. We get a very nice care package from Total Boat - AND THEN - it's time to bond the seats in!! After a week of trimming, adjusting, and sanding; I come away a little bruised, but still in high spirits. Snowstorms are arriving in Maryland, but that won't stop us from working through the winter. We're going to take a jump into the future in this video (current time, filmed just this week) to give you the details on how we continue to build inside the tent through the winter. If you remember those large propane heaters we have inside the tent which came in great use this past spring as we began bonding? They haven't been turned on once. But...we've found other ways to warm up areas inside the hulls to keep it warm enough to continue fiberglassing and have the resin fully cure. But - before we can get into that - it is time for a refresher on the layout of our boat. Many of you don't know how our Max Cruise is laid out, or which each section of the hull is. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.
