In this episode we sail from Los Roques, Venezuela to Bonaire, the first of the 3 "ABC" islands we went to, which include Aruba and Curacao. Here we are forced to go into a marina as ALL of the mooring balls were taken! Nonetheless we made the most of our short time there, rented scooters and blasted around the island, and went for some incredible dives. Bonaire is world famous for its diving and it did not disappoint! The marine park has 86 dive sites where you can grab a temporary mooring ball and dive off the back of your boat! SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged 2012 Lagoon 450 Catamaran bought in Tortola, BVI at the beginning of 2018. Colin and his friend spent 4 months getting her seaworthy, before setting sail across the Caribbean. Follow our journey as we continue to fix her and eventually circumnavigate the globe! Even though this is season 6 on YouTube I did not make that many videos in the beginning, and obviously not from my entire sailing life. Before full-time sailing 6 years ago, I sailed several seasons in the Mediterranean, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing and racing ever since. Also, more than 10 years of experience as a captain in Search and Rescue at sea in Norway.

Building a sailboat arch for solar panels, dinghy davits, fenders and workout The best way to mount solar panels on a sailboat is to make a sailboat solar arch on the back. This arch also works as dinghy davits and is very practical. As many has pointed out in past videos the way I was tugging my dinghy was not optimal to say the least. Hoisting it up on deck is a bitch everytime you sail and I also needed more room to put solar panels and toys like my electric scooters. The building of an arch became more and more obvious, but it was very expensive. A simple arch to my boat was offered made for 3500 Euros, but then the constructor could not promise a given date for delivery. I would not be able to make changes to the design either, so I decided to build it myself with the help of some friends. I really could not have done this project without them. I needed help with the welding, measuring and planing. To this date there is no drawings for this DIY solar arch. It was made as we progressed and built on site. For me welding a solar arch in stainless steel was a challenge, and a friend helped me weld it together. The total cost of building sailboat davits and arch in stainless steel arch for this project was about 1000 Euros. I also bought equipment specially for this project at a cost og 600 Euros and another 600 Euros for a new drill and grinder that I would have bought anyways. All in all the arch did not get expensive at all, but there is a lot of hours spent, and still to be spent! Please note; this is not a DIY video intended for knowledge on building arch for sailboat. Patrick Childress talks about almost falling overboard while peeing off a boat when he was younger, and about what other professionals feel about peeing off a boat, and what they practice and teach in regards to peeing over the side of a sailboat, particularly when offshore sailing. Constructing a mast and sprit for a Chameleon sailing dinghy seems like a simple affair, but it's actually quite complex. It takes a lot of effort to plane a 12' long 4x4 post into a 12' long 2" diameter mast. The process also creates an extraordinary amount of wood chips as well. Wow, what a mess. I cheated a bit on the sprit by using 1.5" round pine stock. The end product turned out absolutely wonderful. After the parts were built, I applied 5 coats of varnish. Shoot, just this step alone takes the better part of a week - sanding each coat once dry before the next is applied. Still, now that the parts are finished, they are just gorgeous to look at. All in all, I feel like I've done a good job at building these sailing components, and now the little boat is one BIG step closer to becoming a genuine, tiny sailing dinghy. Thanks for watching!! Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Canon R50 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Back up is a Canon 200d. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. I also use an Insta 360 and have two drones, a Magic mini2 and Mavic pro Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have limited communications with the outside World.
