#sailingvideo #sailingblog After a few repairs I head out to sea and new adventures. Don't forget to click the bell next to the subscribe button to notify you of every new episode, that way you’ll never miss an adventure!! As our videos tend to run behind time, our FACEBOOK page ‘Adventures of an old Seadog’ has ‘realtime’ up-dates and news so you can keep up to date. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. There is no better feeling then going back in the water after a long stint on the hard stand. SPLASH DAY WOOOH! https://www.sailingnandji.com/ This video was filmed in March as the global pandemic took off. Thailand was one of the first countries affected and we took the adequate precautions early to protect ourselves. If you would like to contribute towards Nandji's repairs please use this link. Thank you. http://paypal.me/SailingNandji If you are getting something out of our videos, please become a Patron to help support our production and adventures. Get Unseen footage, Exclusive vids and the inside scoop! http://www.patreon.com/Nandji In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we launch Nandji back into the drink. After being on the hard stand for a month working our butts off, it is hard to believe this day finally came. When we first rolled into the yard with holes and basically no rudder, we knew we had a mammoth task in front of us! After a slow start due to a little bureaucracy, we had only 3 weeks left on our visa to complete the repairs on time and we managed to launch Nandji a day earlier! Completing majority of the repairs our selves, it is a rewarding feeling to get our home back in the ocean and ready to sail once again. With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed on our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World! She was recently sold in 2018 and shipped to Croatia, where she underwent a complete transformation. Her entire interior was replaced with current, and stylish fabrics and materials. Her exterior was painted a Navy Blue. Electronics, A/V, air conditioning and other critical systems were replaced. The intent of her current owners was to charter her in the growing Adriatic market. However, due to the recent tariffs on yachts built in the US, and imported to Europe, this plan had to be abandoned. She's been shipped back to the U.S. to be sold. With her spacious on-deck master, and ample exterior spaces, she is ideal for a family with a desire the cruise the Bahamas and the Caribbean. Finally the weather started cooperating and we had a good weather window for crossing the Atlantic to Horta in Azores! After 2 days however, the journey deteriorated BADLY. Everything started falling apart… or OFF as the case may be. This was by far our worst sail ever as Adam and I struggled to keep calm and fix things one by one... not the best start to our crossing. SUBSCRIBE and hit the bell for weekly videos! http://www.youtube.com/c/MJSailing?sub_confirmation=1 After three months away, we return home to a boat that is not supposed to be in the water....but still is. Jumping an early morning flight from Lisbon back to Elements, sitting in Terceira Azores, we arrive with just enough energy to climb on board and fall asleep....while still grumbling about the fact she was supposed to be hauled out of the water 10 weeks ago. The next morning they are able to make space for us in the work yard though, and Elements gets taken out of the water for the first time in nearly two years. We have a chance to see how our antifouling has held up. Back in Indiantown we applied Interlux Interprotect, and we can see once she's out of the water that it has wiped off almost back down to the base coat. We had planned on applying new antifouling during our haul out, but this time we'll be switching brands to something that hopefully works a little better for us. With Elements out of the water and sitting on stands, it's time to dive into projects so we can have her back in the water within a few weeks, planning our next leg north. Much love from The Azores! Our new Southerly 480 sailboat came out of the mould at the Discovery Yachts Shipyard in the UK last week and we were there to document it! In this latest update we show you the laying-up process for the hull of Distant Shores III, show the hull coming out of the mould, check out the unique swing keel and take a look at the “plug” for the new pilothouse cabin top. (A plug is a mock-up from which the final mould will be made.) We’ve been working with the design team on this new model of Southerly Yacht, the first one to be built by Discovery Yachts Group. We’re excited to show you the build process of this new boat! It is the third Southerly Yacht we’ve owned. We’re definitely fans! DO NOT FOLLOW THE MAGENTA LINE! I've told this to Sierra before and I found myself loose focus and misinterpret the local markers as they switched from red, right, return, back to red on the left for the ICW. The result is us running aground. We didn't hit hard because I felt a light bump first and threw it in Neutral. We had a family on a small boat stop by and help pull us off. We are lucky we got off so easy. It could have been way worse. fter taking possession of the new to us Nordhavn 56 Motorsailer and getting her all ready to go, we leave the dock in Florida and head south toward the Panama Canal. Our plan was do go from Tampa Florida to Colon Panama, a distance of roughly 1200 nautical miles in one long passage - weather allowing. We did make it all on once passage and try to share the experience in this video. The strangest thing that happened on this passage is that we got boarded by people that were likely Nicaraguan military, although they did not behave at all as if they had professional military training. They would not let us take down our sails, rammed into the side of our boat several times, and shook us down for “gifts” before finally leaving. They were basically thugs with uniforms - some might even say pirates. We managed to capture on video the incredibly crazy maneuvers of the boat operator and the boarding party when they finally left. There are images of killing fish so for anyone who doesn’t want to see it - please skip ahead. This Malo 39 really had me taken aback! I can forgive her for not being a center cockpit, because she had just about the best aft cockpit, and below deck design that I've seen in a boat of this size and vintage. Our worst days sailing are always better than our best days when we were at work. Sailing Thailand is turning into one of our best sailing adventures ever! So much to see, so much to do, and this episode we even have a sailing breeze. Enjoy! For those of you interested in chartering in this amazing part of the world, head over to https://groupislandspirit.com/ The equipment we use: Sony A7iii DJI OSmo Pocket Go Pro Hero 7 Black DJI Mavic Pro 2 DJI Spark Manfrotto Pixie DJI Osmo 2 https://amzn.to/2D7e9Go Very, very occasionally we use stock footage for instance in cases where we cannot legally use our equipment. Examples of this include territory's where drones are forbidden or where regular filming is restricted. All this equipment has been tried and tested in the field and we love it! On August 30th, 1892, the nearly brand new Western Reserve, the first steel hulled freighter on the Great Lakes, broke in two in a late summer Lake Superior storm. Her innovation might have been her downfall. She took with her 26 passengers and crew. Incredibly, one man managed to survive and share his story.
