Join me in the adventures of living aboard, cruising and racing my 1982 C&C 34 here in the Vancouver, BC region. I never bought s/v Moonshine with the intention of living aboard, but sometimes things just make sense. So January 1st, 2014 I moved her to a live-aboard marina and began my new life of simplified living. I still cruise, will do the odd race and one day hope to sail away into the sunset for much broader adventures! I would love to hear from others out there who share the same interests and would be happy to answer any questions if can. We all have lines on the boat that need to be put away, but still be ready go at a moments notice. Here is a neat method for coiling a line that eliminates that annoying twist and tangle. Credit for this coiling method goes out to a good friend of mine who taught me it. www.lifeislikesailing.com www.facebook.com/lifeislikesailing

Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. This part of Fiji is considered the most remote in Fiji. There is no customs and immigration there hence our first stop on the main island. But hey, the harder you work for something the more it is worth it right? Well our first stop, the Bay of Islands, on Vanua Balavu, was a perfect first intro to the island group. It is breathtakingly beautiful with calm and secluded anchorages and millions of shallow little bays connected by tiny passages. It was like our own personal water world. What a start to this seasons tropical cruising! Sustenance living in the villages means every family and village has a garden and they provide well for themselves. With so much growing in abundance in the warm tropical climate we were able to trade just a little bit.
I’ve been installing a watermaker on our sailboat Atticus II so that we can raise our daughter off grid and out in nature. But right now the boat is a total mess, and I’ve still got a ton of work to do before my wife and baby move back aboard. Honestly I don’t know how I’m gonna pull it off. For more reviews test data and captain's report of Mako boats, go to http://www.boattest.com/boats/boat_video.aspx?ID=2660 Originally built as work boats capable of carrying a heavy load of nets or traps across shallow, protected coastal waters, traditional skiff designs share characteristics that include a flat or nearly flat bottom with a broad beam for the boat's length, and a blunt bow. Recreational anglers find those same features favorable for negotiating shallows while fishing protected waters where there is not the need for a traditional vee'd hull to tackle rough water on a regular basis. The skiff category has become popular as interest in in-shore light tackle saltwater fishing has grown. The Pro 17 Skiff CC is one of three skiff configurations Mako offers in 2012, which include a 17 tiller model, a 16 foot center console and an 18 foot Light Tackle version, with a new, shallow-running hull design. The engine has gone 800 hours and it is time to clean the heat exchanger and change the coolant fluid. It is always a big mess to let out the coolant and this time I also remove the heat exchanger cooling pipe held in place by two rubber boots or sleeves. But as you know one problem leads to the next one and this time it's no exception. The system rinse must be done every 400 hours according to the manual and the coolant must be changed every 2. year to protect the system against corrosion. The brass cooling unit must lie in vinegar a day or two to remove any deposits in and around the cooling pipes.

Weather-reports said a storm was coming so the first thing I thought was to get in a posision to take advantage of that. 15 miles straight out from my hometown Haugesund, in the roaring ocean, there is an beautiful, peaceful island called Utsira. Accually it is the smallest comunity in Norway with only 200 inhabitants. My plan was to get out there and let the storm blow me back to Haugesund the next day... _________________________________________________________________ I now have a new official Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/nobullshitjustsailing/?fref=ts) I would be really glad if you would visit it, hit the "like"-button and support me :) Erik T-shirts and merch: https://shop.spreadshirt.no/nbjs-factory My own canvas printed photographs from resent expeditions: https://erik-aanderaa.pixels.com/ My mothers canvas printed pictures: https://edith-odden.pixels.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nobullshitjustsailing/?fref=ts Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/erikaanderaa/ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=3146656&ty=h Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/erik-aanderaa-552953a4?trk=nav_responsive_tab_profile

If there were a better lifestyle than spending long days on a yacht exploring distant locales, well… we’re not aware of it. And to our eye, the Endurance 720 from Hampton Yachts has all the ingredients. These include: ease of use for an owner/operator, plenty of storage for provisioning on long cruises, robust systems redundancy, accommodations for up to eight guests, and room to spread out…and did we mention ease of use?

Have you ever wondered what to do with your boat during a storm? How to survive a hurricane on a sailboat? This week we tell a sailboat story about a 35 foot sailboat anchored during hurricane Michael after surviving Hurricane Florence on the Chesapeake Bay. How to anchor a sailboat for a storm, how to prepare a sailboat for a hurricane, and invite you to share your sailboat stories too! Learn how! Need a consult? This Dufour Gib'Sea 51 is THE BEST MONOHULL for large families wanting to go exploring the world needing something strong, reliable, super roomy and yet affordable. A unique layout with 5 cabins which do not compromise on the giant salon, a practical galley, a huge walk-though cockpit and generous storage capacity for everything you need to live-aboard year around. This is basically the one boat out there that can make it possible for families who can't find anything to sail around the world without being on top of each other, or alternatively for a group of friends to go set sail together in search of the most perfect surf breaks and who need privacy from one another as well as a ton of room for their gear. Torea VI is the happy home of the most extraordinary family we have met! @sailingwithsix (Look them up on Instagram and check their YouTube videos!) We are all madly in awe of them and of course of their boat, which has just now hit the market as they decided that it was time for them to look for a catamaran. It was a tough decision as they adore their boat and know they can trust her no matter what, but with a dad working remotely, all four kids home-schooled and two of them fast becoming teenagers, it is time to look for something larger. This beautiful boat is brought to you in turnkey condition, with two subsequent owners, (her previous French family who sailed her to Australia with a bunch of kids too, and her current family), who both continually improved on her design to suit her to serious offshore cruising and independence when living on board. (Please note this boat is now sold and the family is off to Mexico to purchase their next boat, but a very interesting video to watch if you seek inspiration on how to fit out a similar boat for live-aboard living and independent world cruising, especially with a large family!). ------------------------- For more information please get in touch with us. In spite of the restrictions imposed by Covid-19 we have been able to help families begin their cruising dreams thanks to video calls and completely open communication Let us know if you have any questions, would like to chat with the owners, or find out how to survey, purchase, register, import , deliver your new boat home, or how to come to meet us here in Fiji and start your live-aboard life in paradise. There are no silly questions and we would simply love to welcome you to our cruising community! Music Credits: Kid Francescoli. Moon. Play Me Again. Julia Minkin, Simon Henner & Mathieu Hocine

The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera.
This week we’re tying up all the little jobs that have been hanging over us before we dive headfirst into the real refit. From the sale yard to the boatyard, this move marks a huge milestone for our 58ft catamaran...and for us!!! It’s the end of the beginning, and the start of the work that will truly shape this boat into our home. Rudders to build, engines to service, hull to prep and countless projects ahead. Thanks for being here as we take the next step in this journey - the boatyard chapter begins now! 😍 For ad-free and early release episodes, behind the scenes content and live updates, check out our Patreon! We travel all the way to Vietnam to check out the Max Cruise Marine work yard. Join us as we travel from our marina all the way to Ho Chi Minh City. Our hotel is a beautiful spot on the river, but we don't actually spend much time there. It was right off to the Max Cruise Factory to see all the work being done there. It was overwhelming when we walked in, there was so much happening everywhere! After a walk through the factory, we show the progress of how these catamarans are built, starting with Hull 10, which was just getting infused. Then we stroll through hulls 9, 8, 7, and finally 6 - and see projects that we've already completed and ones that are still a long way off. We have 2 more Vietnam episodes after this, but we hope you enjoy this introduction to the Max Cruise factory!! We hope you enjoy! Much love from Annapolis!
