The Nordhavn 40 platform is solid, stable, and capable - engineered to safely take you across the ocean or along the coast in an economical package that has no equal in this size and price range. Sea Trek is a first generation (US built) Nordhavn 40 – hull 32 out of 44 produced in southern California by legendary cruising sailboat builder, Pacific Seacraft. When this California builder faltered at hull 44, PAE/Nordhavn shipped the tooling to the Nordhavn yard in China to continue production starting with hull 45 and differentiated the two versions in this series as Mark I US made, and Mark II China built. The saloon is spacious because it is pushed out on both sides, no wasted space filled with rarely used walking side decks. Sea Trek was ordered with the optional fly bridge, which provides an excellent outdoor area above the pilothouse for taking command underway or relaxing when at rest. Following in the footsteps of the older and larger siblings that preceded her, the Nordhavn 40 established a production hallmark that set the standard for all Nordhavn models to follow. Starting with highly polished tooling, she has a solid fiberglass hull layup with integrated swim platform. The deck layout took advantage of many preferred features including a recessed anchor well on the bow, built-in deck boxes on the foredeck and a Portuguese bridge. Outside and up some steps, takes you to the boat deck and flybridge. The dinghy is mounted aft (athwartships) and the mast supported boom is used to launch and retrieve the tender. Nearly (70) Nordhavn 40s have been produced, approximately 44 in the US and 30 in China. The rising costs of materials and labor has pushed the new boat price for a well outfitted Nordhavn 40 into an uncomfortable territory. In this episode I will open a Gazelle Innergy li-ion battery pack. This is a more recent battery and has higher capacity cells in it. The average capacity of the cells salvaged from this battery was about 2250 mah tested on the Opus. And that's times 50!!! Ebike battery packs from more recent bikes have higher capacity cells, so the newer the pack, the higher the possibly tested capacity. Often these battery packs go faulty due to BMS failure. This results in battery packs with 50 good cells.

Due to its remote location, limited law enforcement presence, and proximity to drug trafficking routes, this area has seen reports of boardings and opportunistic theft on anchored and sailing vessels. While not widespread or highly organized, these incidents have led many cruisers like us to take extra precautions or avoid the area altogether when planning their routes through Central America. The route from Panama to the Bay islands of Honduras goes right through this area and it's not really possible to avoid the area altogether. The best thing we can do is try to stay offshore far enough where its way more difficult for the these pirates to get all the way out to us in their smaller vessels.. So here we go... 700 miles on the big blue trying to avoid any trouble. It's been busy at the bottom of the world as more of the Vendée Globe fleet rounds Cape Horn and turn up into the South Atlantic. Exiting the wastes of the Indian and Southern Oceans behind is a big psychological step for all, but for one skipper the infamous headland marked a crushing blow. It's time to work on the bulkhead which separates our salon and cockpit, and we're going all out on extra fiberglass re-enforcements. Although *both* sides will get beefed up a little bit, in this episode we focus on the inner facing side of the bulkhead, which will be the entrance to our two queen bunks in the hulls, and will be the aft portion of our salon on the bridge deck. We put on this basic blacksmithing course in Costa Rica with the help of our friends and in conjunction with El Astillero Verde with the hopes of making a difference in the community down there. It was a very rewarding trip on many different levels. In this video we are wrapping up that trip. The course went over so well and the best part was hearing from everyone that took the course saying that not only did they enjoy it, but that they would be keeping up with it and bringing it back to their communities. This was the whole point of the course in the first place, and we never would have been able to pull it off without the help of our friends. Not only did the course go over well but while we were at the shipyard, our crew was able to tackle a couple different projects, including fixing up the student built boat there. Due to the drying conditions at certain times of the year there, the planking had significantly dried up and the seams had opened up, making it unusable. Kit Macchi and Anne Bryant reefed all the seems, installed splines and then Kit double planked the bottom of the vessel to help with any future issues, while Anne and Andrew Guest (from Restoring Rosalind) caulked the boat back up again. It was a tough problem to solve with the time given, the resources and the rough Costa Rican environment but they did an amazing job. We also got to see a lot of work get done on the building on the Ceiba while we were at the shipyard, which is just an incredible project. Not only is the scale impressive but so is the concept of the work and change she is to bring about once on the water. Getting to see such a massive ship coming together was a real treat and we can't wait to see her on the water. Meanwhile, this trip likely would not have gone the way it did without the all of Steve's hard work. After organizing the majority of this trip, he ended up taking one for the team, staying home to get our new thicknesser up and running for our upcoming planking party. We discussed this long and hard but in the long run, he convinced me that I needed to go to Costa Rica to get footage while he wrenched on the machinery here and got things ready. In the end, we are a team and sometimes we need to divide and conquer. At least he got to get out on a quick climbing trip locally. We hope you enjoy this next installment.
