Charlie Dalin didn’t just win the Vendee Globe he smashed it out of the park, destroyed the record and sailed a near flawless race. Taking more than 9 days off the previous record is staggering. This was a triumph from a personal point too and this was a performance that came down to his considerable experience and his meticulous preparations around an advanced and sophisticated boat. He was pushed hard by Yoann Richomme the whole way round and crossed the line just under a day later in second. Richomme's first lap of the planet was played out at an incredible pace. We're so close to getting in the water, and yet still so far. It's been a hectic time for us as we try to finish all the last projects before splashing. With our centerboard dropped we had the well soda blasted (even though I accidentally say sandblasted about 5 times), which gives Matt and I the opportunity to get fresh coats of aluminum primer and barrier paint into the centerboard well. A much harder job for Matt than for me. With the Awl Grip applied it was time to go back and reapply our Kiwi Grip non skid that had initially been applied in October, but sanded down for reapplication. I taped off the cabin top and combing, and we spent one morning getting a nice new coat on half the boat. Matt gets working in the anchor locker to have a nice clean area for our chain to drop in so we don't have metal sitting on metal, and I have a little whine session about how our decals came back wrong. We had to get back to doing a few boat jobs after all of our fun and frivolity of last episode and we introduce what we think is our biggest investment on the boat yet… a Hydrovane. Adam has been raving about this piece of gear for at least two years and it’s been on our upgrade list since then but as usual, there was always something more important to do first! Until now. So after a building a template for a fabricator to make up and then receiving a fantastic hand me down chart plotter and radar (unfortunately with broken cables) we were stuck in a bit of a holding pattern, waiting on the next step or parts to arrive… so the only thing to do was to go for a spearfish! And for once, we (Adam) actually caught ourselves a little feed! A huge rock flew up and destroyed our windshield, crazy part is this is a nice road! We do our best to think outside the box and come up with a temporary 'on-the-fly' fix since we're hundreds of kilometers from any repair shop. I can only imagine what damage will come once we hit the dirt roads of the Yukon and Alaska! We are about to set sail on a 3000 mile offshore ocean passage. Just the two of us double handed, sailing our 37ft yacht Florence all alone on board, for up to a month at sea. In this video we share some of the preparations as we undertake a full mast tip to bilge check over of Florence. Preparing a yacht in this part of Indonesia with almost no marine yachting services requires us to undertake everything ourselves. It is not long now until we depart Indonesia to continue our world sailing circumnavigation which was put on pause when we were stuck here by the pandemic, we have 16,000 miles of ocean sailing left between us and home in England. We are a British couple who set off from England in 2016 to fulfill our dream of sailing around the world on our 37ft sail boat, Florence.
